Yeah, that's one of my gripes about the "tutorial" written here. "Hey, change this list of settings, don't worry about what they do you won't possibly need to adjust any of it!" @@ 95% of Youtube tutorials are garbage.

Some more modern "Flaming Cliffs" modules
Mars Exulte replied to Flogger23m's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Everything is marketing, as in different products to different audiences. That's why there's multiple brands of every product imaginable, with different flavors and varieties among them even under the same label. I don't get why this whole concept appears to be a hangup for people. It's no different than Halo and Arma being separated. They're both shooters, designed to appeal to different audiences. One is more casual, one is more of a simulator. They are separate games, though. DCS is a more hardcore simulator, MAC will be targeting casual audiences, ie MSFS. They are separate games, with separate audiences. And yes, some people ''crossover'' and fly FC3 aircraft some, too. It doesn't matter, the majority populations tend toward separation. Having MAC and DCS neither will hurt the other, because those are generally separate populations anyway. Remember that whole '''DCS is niche'' thing? This is intended to increase the casual population while still keeping them in the ecosystem/brand ie more chance of filtering over into DCS over time. They don't inherently need to co-exist on the same servers, though, and attempting to integrate them is inevitably going to.be an ass pain, adjusting them to start at similar speeds, adjusting their ''capabilities'' (you can't ''casualise'' 20 different radar modes, you have to cut a lot of them out wholesale). I have seen people go ''Oh it's the same just you can't click the cockpit switches''... No, it's not. It's not that way in FC3 now, it won't be that way in MAC, and it isn't even remotely logical to make it that way for half the planes we have they're too complex with too many systems and you either have to remove stuff or gameify it to make it work. You know what solves this issue? Separating the products! Then you don't have to F with any of this crap and everything operates in the same fashion, on the same footing, and so forth. -
They're just degrees of simulation ultimately. The simplest ones just used a lookup table to generate precanned behavior (these are no longer used for player aircraft and the AI won't be using them much longer). The mid range ones simulated ground handling behavior and some limited aerial characteristics, these are no longer used by player aircraft either, except for the Su-25A/T. EFM is an externally developed model (ie 3rd party, not ED, but intended to be high fidelity), and PFM is a high fidelity model developed in house. These last two are typically most complex and focus a lot on 'edge of envelope' behavior. I don't know why they bothered with all this loopy terminology, every two weeks somebody comes in confused about it. There is lo-fi and hi-fi that's it, and lo-fi is being phased out even for AI. So, basically, this isn't something anybody needs to be concerned about and should forget about it =D

Easy Model F-16 arrived today. For $30, it's actually pretty nice. Got a EM Eurofighter coming in along with two more from Calibre (Su-24 and Su-27 in Ukrainian colors). -edit I um... ordered five more today. I'm going to have make a folder now.

In line with this developing story, my wife will be using my VR pit with VKB/Viril/SLAW all of established reputation. I will be using a laptop w TrackIR and a entry level HOTAS. I have used mostly Saitek units in the past such as FLY5 (very good except for poorly designed buttons), X52 (crap), and X55/56 (overall good, but persistent power issues with every unit I've ever touched). This time I've opted to go with something new, and ordered two separate units as candidates. The T16000M w TWCS combo And an unknown unit that appears to be somewhat related/or cooperative to VKB based on my research. The Flashfire Cobra V5 whose styling I really like. The TWCS arrives today, the Cobra in a few weeks. Will update with thoughts in separate threads in appropriate forum sections. -update My TWCS is lost in the mail evidently, it went from 60 miles away to ''the great void'' and who knows when I'll get it now. Will be funny if the one shipping from China gets here faster than the across town @@

My wife had never flown before she met me, and she had a significant fear of flying, didn't particularly like me doing it either. She was forced to fly on a couple short trips to Kyiv, and then the big trans-Atlantic flight when we moved to the US and they didn't go real smoothly (I looked over to see her in tears repeatedly crossing herself during the first takeoff ) Anyway, fast forward a few months and I'm trying unsuccessfully to coax her into a sailplane and she wasn't having it. Some of you may have noticed me struggling with my VR headset lately, and now I've given my wife a couple flying lessons in VR. Being able to learn in the same aircraft used by the Ukrainian Air Force (L-39 obs), in an area strongly resembling the Carpathians where she grew up (the mountains south of Kobuleti) was icing on the cake. She is no longer afraid of flying. Learning about the aircraft a bit, how they fly, how you control them, made a big difference. It's no longer ''unknown and scary''. It was also nice seeing her quietly looking at the mountains getting homesick and remarking how beautiful it is. She said it's not ''almost'' like real, it IS real. My wife is now willing to give the glider a try, and we can also play DCS together a bit now. Thanks to @Barthek for the lovely Caucasus textures she was admiring, @Strikesabre98 for the UAF skin her plane was wearing, and Eagle Dynamics for the simulator she used to experience it all

Some more modern "Flaming Cliffs" modules
Mars Exulte replied to Flogger23m's topic in DCS Core Wish List
The ''roots'' are ''the best possible at the time''. For its Era, FC3 was 'high fidelity'. MAC will be a completely separate product providing more or less what you want. DCS is about high fidelity aircraft and always has been. You will notice the distinct absence of production of ANY ''low fidelity'' aircraft since DCS came into existence. This IS its ''root''. The only reason FC3 was ever incorporated at all is because there was a distinct lack of variety at the time, a lack since rectified. -
I have issue perceiving/separating certain shades of red and green, as well as slight astigmatism, so that is likely a contributing factor, based on this. Eyes are complicated, yo. Thanks for the read.

Do I even need to have Virtual Memory turned on?
Mars Exulte replied to Mikkall's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Type that question into a search bar, you'll be amazed at the answers it can spit out. But in short, yes, you need it. Slightly longer, because that's how Windows is designed to operate. Even slightly longer, you can disable it, but there is little to no gain, it may or may not cause problems depending on usage, and again, Windows is designed to operate with it. -
Testing now, will update. -edit So, it feels like my "eyes" are farther apart now, but as far as "enhancing" the 3d effect, it doesn't. I do feel slightly "cross-eyed" and it seems to be increasing faint feelings of disorientation and motion sickness, though that could also just be the fact I have barely eaten lately and I haven't messed with VR in months

I ordered four models. The first one arrived today! It's quite awesome! Only complaint is it's not actually what I ordered! -edit Unopened cause I'm hoping to exchange it for the correct plane, still

Some questions about VR and how to setup the damn thing
Mars Exulte replied to MaxisQ's topic in Virtual Reality
I had a Rift S, not a Quest, but I doubt much has changed. There is an Oculus app you can get off their website you'll need. At one point you needed a Facebook account, but afaik it's back to being independent now. As I remember it walks you through the process and tells you what to plug in and what to do. Pretty easy to set up in comparison to most other stuff. Oculus headsets may be somewhat inferior to others in some ways, but props to their UI and infrastructure for working consistently, at least in my experience. Helluva lot less trouble than juggling WMR/Steam/OpenXR with my Reverb was. -
Chiming in to make it official. You were right, I was wrong. On a whim I started messing with it again and found that pushing on the headset plugin caused the light to go stable. It's a poor connection at the headset, 100%. The power adapter is not the problem, at least not anymore. So, now back to the problem I was originally supposed to be troubleshooting when I picked this damn thing up again two weeks ago... I'm using OpenXR and my hand controllers were offset ingame, now, since then I've found the OpenXR utility that appears to adjust the axis placement of the hands, and I'm fairly certain that will fix my issue. However, I have a new issue. The hands aren't in DCS at all anymore, and DCS does not appear to detect them (ie not in the controller menu like the used to be). I have checked they're enabled, in the VR options, I dc'd and reconnected them via bluetooth and they work fine in WMR. Is this a thing now? They worked a few months ago, they were just offset so I would turn them off ingame. They're completely nowhere to be found now, though. Update: HP sent me a barrage of emails earlier today with three separate shipping notices, but scant on details. Either somebody fatfingered the keyboard or they're replacing my entire setup. Will update when I can. Nuther Update: So, the box ended up containing another power adapter, a USB C - 3.0 adapter, and a new power cord for the wall unit. These are all visibly different from the previous two sets, so apparently some sort of revision. Swapping them out, once again, my headset appears to be working normally. Will update in a few days if something goes haywire again, but for now, it appears to be functioning *shrug* Nuther Update: The new cables, despite prior expectations, do indeed appear to have resolved the power issues. I can't come up with any other explanation other than I was particularly unfortunate and had two bad cables in a row. I've deliberately been cycling the power and messing with it TRYING to make it f up, and it is consistently working. So... *SHRUG* who the hell knows. Still can't get my hands to work in DCS and out of ideas for that one. DCS just doesn't seem to recognise that they're there Update I updated OpenXR and they're back. I think what happened is I updated DCS right after installing everything and it overwrote something. The thumbs are glitching and the orientation is off, but they're back, baby!
-
I dunno. It fixed it temporarily when I replaced the first one. Thing is, it had been sitting undisturbed for a couple months, so it went from working to not working during that time. There's not much opportunity for ''bent pins'' when it isn't being moved.
-
HP is supposed to send me a third cable, but they're being a nuisance about it now.

Well, considering that developers tendency to promise the moon and then deliver an oreo, I'd discount everything they have to say offhand. Addressing the matter directly, Star Citizen and DCS are very different. One is an MMO, the other is not nor will ever be. Both simulate physics and systems, but DCS is a bit mire intensive plus sensitive to latency. In other words, some stuff can't be offloaded to another system, it has to be done on yours because even milisecond delays are likely to introduce significant deviations. Ever seen players/ships warping around due to a bad net connection? That's latency, when there's a discrepancy between where you are and where the server thinks you are and the warping is the periodic updated communications. Some stuff can be done ''offsite'' some can't, because of a similar issue.
-
No, because it's not related. A really busy server, you may have issues, yes. A lesser populated or private server, probably not an issue. Where you WILL have issues, is downloads, especially if you accumulate maps, and with the very frequent patches that sometimes run into 10s of GB (note I own nearly every module, so your mileage will vary). Ultimately, I'd say the bigger issue is are you planning on mostly offline or mostly online? Because playing online will require freqeuent updates. Playing offline, you can just update when your chosen aircraft gets major updates (which may be never if it's an older or mostly finished aircraft).

Disable autostart sequence in a mission
Mars Exulte replied to Ducksen's topic in DCS Core Wish List
You wouldn't even have to do that. I usually can memorise the "official" startup procedure in about 30 minutes and a half dozen test runs (depending on aircraft complexity), it really isn't that hard. Once you figure out how to do it in general, then you can figure out which parts can be rushed/skipped/done simultaneously (like starting GPS alignment ASAP so you're not wasting time while doing other stuff). Usually, another 30 minutes or so. Then you create a macro so, at a push of a button, this "ideal/streamlined" sequence, which you jotted down on a napkin, auto executes. This is the worst case scenario where you absolutely don't know how to start a plane at all, typically you'd be flying your current interest, so you'd probably already know how to do all this, and could skip straight to step 3.- 147 replies

Disable autostart sequence in a mission
Mars Exulte replied to Ducksen's topic in DCS Core Wish List
This would be a combination of impatience and reality vs video game clashing. The first is obvious, the second is in real world there are weight and construction grade restrictions that simply aren't present in DCS (hard vs soft pavement in other words) plus real world bases are much more crowded and active than the typical DCS server airfield (ie safety). It is dumb, but like most things vidyagame related, there are some aspects that just don't carry over from RL to VR. This isn't combat. It's a videogame. 99% of people don't care if they get killed because it doesn't matter. Even the hardcore ones. Pretending otherwise is literally RP, and it's that simple. This is called ''joining a clan''. Open join/leave servers are, by definition, aimed at casual players who typically are not available for a multihour sortie. If they had that kind of spare time and serious approach, they would typically join a clan..because that's what you do. You can. Many people will not. If you haven't noticed, even in real world conflicts, not everyone is super professional and tacticool. Certain militaries doctrinally rely on more or less an uncoordinated zerg rush of barely organised imbeciles (looks meaningfully at Russia). Servers can make playing on their server a pain in the ass. They cannot meaningfully influence player behavior. Source, myself, and years of experience playing online. People behave in the exact same fashion in every game I've ever played, on every server, regardless of how relaxed or severe 'consequences' were. If you want tight, restrictive gameplay, that is perfectly fine (I lean towards that myself, and am frequently frustrated with people's online bs). But that's what clans are for, so you can join likeminded people enmasse who all want approximately the same thing. This is largely self policing, in other words, and oriented around mentality. You literally cannot legislate people to play the game your way on an open server. It's literally not possible, because most of them will not give a <profanity> about your gamey ''influences'' and will do whatever they want anyway. Because it's a video game, and they unsurprisingly don't care.- 147 replies

Disable autostart sequence in a mission
Mars Exulte replied to Ducksen's topic in DCS Core Wish List
This just occurred to me. In real life, no one, and I mean no one, makes things harder and more complicated than necessary. Auto prop, auto fuel mixture, auto radiator, auto oil cooler, ground crew doing most the start up/prep for you, these are all real world things people did to make things as simple as possible. Hell, by the 1950s the most complicated thing a fighter pilot had to deal with was his radio and gunsight (based on the saber). No torque, no engine settings to manipulate, nothing. Just barebones. Didn't last long because of radar and avionics, but nobody tacked a bunch of useless drivel on just because. Then we've got some desk jockey puffing away on his inhaler ranting about how you couldn't hack it as a real pilot and he could because he knows how to RP a BIT test. It's just so stupid =D- 147 replies
