My initial impressions of the change in today's patch are *very* positive! I'm using a Varjo Aero at 35PPD, and the improvement is massive! No longer do I see huge black squares in the sky at ridiculous distances. I'll keep an eye on it during the next few days as well But for now I am a very happy bunny!

Depends on which modules you have installed. Have a look at my earlier post here in this thread to look at how large it was for me.

Unacceptable performance in VR
Raven (Elysian Angel) replied to Crime 1-2's topic in Bugs and Problems
Depending on hardware and settings you might not notice anything during normal ga--- err simplay, but the framerate is definitely lower compared to other (recent) modules.- 20 replies

DCS: OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Upcoming Update

Oooh nice, I can’t wait! -
Any interesting or challenging flight dynamics?
Raven (Elysian Angel) replied to Whirley's topic in DCS: CH-47F
It makes sense when you think about it: the higher the cargo lift capability of the helicopter, the more excess power and rotor diameter it needs to be decently user friendly during operational use - especially when it’s supposed to operate in countries at high elevation such as Afghanistan. So it should be able to do remarkable things when empty and low on fuel. -
So am I. On the PolyChop Discord have been talking about aircraft helmets, and that they apparently filter out much more sound than people realise. Multiple people said that the DCS option "hear like in helmet" is still too loud compared to real life. All this doesn't change however that Apaches flying a few miles ahead of me are louder than me hearing my own helo while sitting in the cockpit with the doors off. I do hope that at least changes.

investigating unplayable in VR
Raven (Elysian Angel) replied to SgtButsy's topic in Bugs and Problems
It is most definitely the module’s fault, there’s absolutely no doubt. The frame rate is that bad because the VRAM buffer of my card gets hilariously overloaded: it’s drinking from a fire hose. Why some people are still debating this, is beyond me… -

Fulcrum small target detection

You obviously completely missed the point. -
Fulcrum small target detection

Personally I hope the AI of all things gets improved in that regard. I have been asking for that for years: no look-down for aircraft that didn't have look-down radars, realistic detection ranges/times, ... I did a test a while ago: me in an F-16 and a friend in the FC3 MiG-29. We made things as fair as possible: we agreed to start co-altitude and nose-on, as the objective was to compare detection ranges, and I had him locked up with an AIM120 in the air long before I even appeared on his radar (and he knew perfectly well where to look from the onset of the test). -
I left it on after switching back to team green and haven't seen any reason yet to turn it off. Indeed. We've had comments in the past by people who know what they are talking about, that 3D V-cache works really well with EDGE (we lack official benchmarks but I imagine it's much like Assetto Corsa Competizione in that regard).

While I agree with that, I am confident that things will improve over time and I will still have paid that same initial price for a module/terrain that eventually (even if it does take 5+ years) WILL be good value. The SA map was heavily marketed as helo-heaven. It is not, not even close. But the recent updates to that map made a MASSIVE difference and now I think it is a very good looking map (for fast-movers anyway). Kola (on my system) uses textures that are minecraft/tetris-quality (even the "new" summer textures) and looks quite ugly to be quite frank - on my system with my settings. I do hope it will get at the very least the same treatment the SA map got: apparently it had to do with compatibility with ED's lighting engine. Afghanistan looks very pretty from higher up but indeed lacks down low and slow. I read the intent to improve low-level textures later on if memory permits and while I do understand you can't have everything even with modern hardware, in the end business-level decisions are also important (the fixed wing crowd is likely MUCH larger than the helo crowd) if we want ED to survive... I did buy the Iraq map because ED hasn't let me down yet (long-term) when it comes to maps, but I will probably not use it very much in the first few months/years.

Funny that you mention Nevada. During the IA Chinook take-off NTTR mission I get 2 (two! - definitely not a typo) fps unless I reduce cockpit texture size to medium, and I have a pretty beefy PC. It's good practice to prevent issues. Personally I clear both folders every time a DCS patch goes live, AND every time I update my graphics drivers. I also clear the DirectX shader folder in Windows itself. -
Good man!

When my nephews want to try out DCS, I just tell them that if they crash the aircraft, my computer breaks for real. The hot-rod of the two (he's really just overcompensating for his very fragile heart of gold) is too afraid to try, while the other is too nice to do anything like that -
Plans, yes - but we haven’t heard about it in a good while. And yes is it, I hope for it to arrive soon as well.

A few remarks: - Yes the training missions have been broken for years now. This doesn't have anything to do with the current disagreement, but is because the training missions and the included campaign are made/maintained by a single person who simply put has too much weight on his shoulders. It's not the fault of that one person, but of whomever decided it was a good idea to put that responsibility solely in the basket of one person, without a contingency plan. - I fully agree that the bare minimum of support any module should get is to make sure the training missions/tutorials are 100% in working order. "Onboarding" matters and "quit moments" are a very real thing. I understand this is a very dynamic process for an Early Access module since things can and do change, but I myself have requested before that both ED and 3rd parties check their own modules at least once or twice per year to make sure the training missions still work as they should to help not only those who recently purchased said module, but also those who decide to revisit it after a (long) break. -
During an interview with Simon a number of years ago (5-6 or so), he said that the new version of EDGE (then under development) would benefit from 64GB of RAM, so when I upgraded my PC in 2020, that’s what I got. Flight sims are hungry beasts (I have seen DCS use 48GB of RAM on multiple occasions - that’s just 1 single application).

Feedback for training missions

Same setup I have, then! You’ll be in sim heaven once you do. Even though I only use the R3L for the F-16, it’s been quite worth the expense! @Chops Feel free to let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.
