  1. Another issue is that you will want different settings if you switch between monitor and VR, since you will have to run with reduced graphical settings to maintain good fps in VR. Since DCS doesn't have separate profiles for that, a good solution is SkateZilla's DCS Updater GUI Utility. You can save multiple settings profiles there. I even use that utility to launch DCS instead of the normal executable. Again, while performance for me in MSFS is crappy compared to DCS, they got it right when it comes to monitor and VR settings separate, and quick switching between monitor and headset at any time you choose. It would be great to have here.
  2. Yes, headset on all the time, at least until they implement a quick way to switch like MSFS has. An image shows on the monitor, but is smaller and in vertical aspect ratio. I use a G2 with WMR. Oculus may be different, I don't know.
  3. Yeah, I'm trying to adjust my mentality. For a decade I've been a warbird pilot, and am learning BVR combat recently. The old pre-cold war adage of "altitude is life insurance" doesn't seem to apply, at least as much. I'm trying to reconcile the fact that finding contacts low (against the ground) is tough, while up high you're easy to spot. And at the same time missiles like height, so you want to be as high as possible when firing for better missile performance. It's a nut I have yet to crack in my mind. Edit - and, yes, I asked a similar question in the F-14 section about the Case 1 procedure where you sweep wings back in order to slow down. That was counter-intuitive to me as well, but is a lesson that delta configurations create much drag at high AoA.
  4. Ok, that's great. Since I read about "presets" selectable in the mission editor, I was curious as to how the new effects would apply to existing content.
  5. Awesome. I bought this plane in large part because you have a campaign coming out for it. One question- do you have access to builds of 2.7 when creating the campaign? I'm wondering if we can take advantage of new assets like the new clouds and such with upcoming single-player content.
  6. I think they were waiting for just one more person to ask.
  7. This happens occasionally for me too. I'm not sure yet what causes it, because it's maybe 1 out of 5 flights or so where it happens, and most of the time it disappears like it's supposed to.
  8. I think better textures improve my flight sim experience. Jumping into something like the P-47 or the Tomcat in VR is an amazing experience, and then when going to an older module like the Sabre it's immediately apparent that I'm in a module that was developed a while ago. Yes, I like the Sabre too, but with how realistic the F-14 is, it feels more like I'm in a video game when starting in the Sabre vs one of the newer modules.
  9. I've used the G2 to play many Steam and at least one Oculus title, Lone Echo, which you will need to install Revive to do.
  10. Oh, also make sure the four cameras' lenses are clean. I looked at mine yesterday and they were all fogged up for some reason. Not sure if it makes a difference in actuality, but it can't hurt.
  11. Do you find the leather-type material itself to be as comfortable as the cloth-type factory gasket? The comfort is one of my favorite things about the G2 (having had the Samsung Odyssey before). But I don't know how to clean the default one and am afraid that it will become funky after a couple more months. So for that reason an easier-to-clean solution is of interest to me. Especially once we can have company over to our homes again. Edit - and to confirm, this comes with the plastic part, correct?
  12. Oh man, I'm so pleased. I just finished mission 5 on my first attempt.
  13. Two days ago I had one in Instant Action in the F-14 attempting the Case 3 SC recovery on the Syria map. It was surprising because DCS crashing is a rare occurrence for me
  14. I'm not sure which was harder, but I think the two single procedures I've spent most time on before I got right were coming to a low hover from speed/altitude in the Huey, and AAR.
  15. If you run the updater it will tell you the version number.
  16. So after a whole bunch of practice in Case 3 recoveries, which I didn't have experience in, I completed mission 4! (Though I did ACLS, which is kind of a cheat I guess? Not sure how often they used in real life). Either way, it was sooo satisfying- BTW - I assume it's safe to replace with the latest version of the campaign and it won't erase my progress?
  17. Maybe plane-dependent, but can your fuel dump be opened during AAR? Edit - just try to keep it on the down low, re: taxpayers and/or the EPA
  18. Someone also told me earlier to clear the seated position setup from WMR and use the standing setup, where you walk in a square with your headset pointed at the monitor. It is counter-intuitive for sim use, but that made tracking better for me. Of course, it may have just been caused by the environment info being reset, but either way it's better for me than before after doing that.
  19. Which map is that campaign supposed to be for?
  20. I would be much, much more likely to buy an F-4 than an F-22. Fly by wire craft in sims seem so sterile to me. I wanted to like the F-18, and tried it during two free trial periods, but it just didn't catch. Conversely, I didn't expect to like the Tomcat, but ended up buying it at the end of the trial period because it was just so damn fun to fly. It's too bad most F-4s don't have guns, but that era of craft is so much more interesting to me than modern server racks. I also stay away from the G1000-equipped planes in the civ flight sim in favor of steam gauge planes, so that illustrates what is interesting to me I guess.
  21. Okay, this campaign has been great. I have a question though. On mission 4 now. Is there any guidance online on how to: That is not something that I see instructions on in the official or Chuck's guide. Edit - the progression in this campaign has been amazing. Having spent an hour in flight, including an AAR, then successfully performing a recovery, is an amazing feeling. I'm sure my wife is laughing silently on the couch nearby as I raise my arms in triumph when trapping a wire after hiding in VR at my desk for an hour.
  22. Since the AI is omniscient - in single player, are there negative effects of setting the Phoenix missiles to active off-the-rail via PH ACT on the MSL OPTIONS switch in the RIO cockpit? If not, wouldn't that allow me to fire them and immediately take evasive maneuvers? (Negative effects such as reduced range, etc?) Another somewhat related question - how do I know when a missile has gone pitbull? The manual just states "about 16 seconds from impact" unless I'm missing some other symbology.
  23. Hello. I'm trying the various Instant Action missions with the Tomcat. Being traditionally a warbird pilot, I have most success in up-close ACM with guns and short-range missiles, especially since the F-14 is so good at low speed fights. However I can't seem to win against equal opponents in BVR contests. There is an Instant Action mission against 2 Mirages, where you get Sparrows and SWs, and they kill me all the time. Are there good videos or other resources where I can learn to manage this type of situation? Edit - my interest is to become competent enough to complete some campaigns for this module, which is what I mainly enjoy doing. I don't really have much interest in BVR combat vs humans at this time
  24. So I just tried and that solution seems awesome - except for the constant blue crosshair right in my center of view. Is that something that you just grow to tolerate? Everything else is better really - being able to use the one crosshair for the radios, using assigned hotas clicks instead of the mouse - but I'd have to learn to get used to the blue crosshair right in prime visual territory.
  25. I understand. Thanks for the explanation, I will try.
