  1. I don't remember the height - would have to take a close look at the video. I was pretty low when I noticed the engine situation and tried to climb as long as a could before the engine died. It was a fair distance out - again, don't remember. It was at least 20 minutes of gliding. Yes to flaps up once speed started bleeding off so quickly. I don't recall correcting for nose down but then the range on the h-stab trim on the Yak is pretty wide.
  2. Yak is a hell of a glider
  3. @Eightball video is what got me hard core into bush flying the Yak.
  4. Not my video - sounds intriguing. I only have one 'tube video posted - Yak-52 engine failure - what are the odds? I've made a bunch of single player missions where I've populated the Caucasus map with all the small, rugged air strips that are missing in the ED supplied base map. Lots of google time - ha! Stuff in Armenia and Azerbaijan included. Loves me some 2CV action. Would love to buy one to add to my fleet of "fun" real cars - not exactly "common" in North America though. Since most modern cars suck things like these are very desirable. Biplane? ED, when? I love character-ful machinery. Would love for someone to do a proper WWI suite of aircraft and assets. Even something pre-WW2 like a Gloster Gladiator for the BoB aircraft when (if?) they end up being done.
  5. I enjoy the Yak. It has a low work load, easy to fly, and is easy to see out of when sightseeing. It's great for bush flying - landing anywhere.. Some of the missions I've created have a rough base set up on the plateau/bowl north of ~ Kutaisi - and a few other places. There are a few things wrong with it, not updated, etc. but it's still fun. I'd like to see the new prop tech added, the borked instruments and engine cooling/temps fixed, damage model completed. You can still bend the landing gear in its current state. Lately I've been flying the I-16 as a sight-seeing plane but it is a twitchy tail dragger when on the ground, landing, and taking off. Really short distance between the main and tail wheel and a big, high torque engine. It's hard to see out of when on the ground but great in level flight - that's its charm. If there is no desire to learn how to handle a tail dragger (expect ~10+ hours) then stick with the Yak. I'd really like to see a Yak-50 (single seat tail dragger version). I have the CEII. Never fly it - find it kind of hard to see out of for sight-seeing purposes. Cessna 172? Would rather DCS: Fieseler Storch.
  6. I generally agree with 10850K being a great CPU choice but given that the 11700K is something like ~10% faster in single core performance I'd be inclined to go with the 11700k for a gaming rig. Will you notice 10% single core performance in "the real world" in DCS? Especially when discussing all the current best of breed CPUs? Maybe? Maybe not? Depends on how you use DCS (mission complexity, single vs multi-player, modern vs vintage, etc.). FWIW, there's not much in it for single core performance between the 5600X, 5800X and 11700K. They are all within a percentage or two of one another by the benchmarks. That's been my experience. HTH
  7. Since Windows is stupid, you need to boot with a monitor plugged into the iGPU. Then the Intel QuickSync drivers will get installed. I usually get the latest Intel drivers from intel.com instead of relying on the ones included in Windows. It probably doesn't really matter though. Once that is done you can select the QuickSync codec in OBS instead of NVENC for capture. There's detailed instructions out there with a bit of searching. Also, anything Adobe will make use of Intel iGPUs as well. IIRC Premiere, Photoshop, and any of the plugins heavily leverage the iGPU if it is available. I'm not a current Adobe hostageware user so take that with a grain of salt.
  8. RE: RAM - yes, agree, there is not much in it with respect to 3200CL14-14-14-3X and 3600CL-16-16-16-3X. At least for Intel. IIRC for AMD the 3600 has it's advantages since the stock setting Infinity Fabric runs at 1800... RAM should be in multiples of 1800MHz and if you overclock then the RAM should be in multiples of whatever the Inf Fabric is set to... 1900 Inf -> 3800 RAM for example. It's not something I've messed with - just regurgitation of what I've read online in the usual places. I suppose there might be something to trying 3x1800 = 5400 MHz RAM. IIRC it exists but probably negligible difference when measured (if any) otherwise it would be more of a "thing". There's probably stuff out there discussing it... FWIW, the AMD machine I have is 3600CL15-15-15-36 (CPU-z - prob really 3600CL16). I got lucky when I bought the machine as a pre-built at the height of the GPU-apocalypse - vendor put together good configuration in spite of zero details of what I was buying from their web site (Details were 5600X, 3070, 16GB RAM and a picture of the completed system). This is my first AMD since the '90s. Peppy box - but I do miss the iGPU for use as a capture device. Enough so that I may swap it with my 11700K Linux box just for that reason. While we are hijacking... I don't have a problem with the new ARM based stuff at all but we need a more general, high performance platform than what Apple is offering with the M1. Getting locked into the Apple MacOS ecosystem is not something I am interested in. I see that Windows 10/11 can run on the M1 now and there is work to get Linux working on it but without a more open BIOS/EEPROM layer... it's problematic at best. I haven't looked into the specifics of these OS installs but expect that it is still gatekeep'ed by Apple in some form. Having run Linux on older Macs - it sucks working around the proprietary-ness of Apple. I have a few ARM SBCs running various flavours of Linux and they work well enough. But, for a power user they are not sufficient for every day use. I basically use them as over built embedded devices (because I'm too lazy to mess with Arduino).. $0.02
  9. You know - as soon as I posted that and left the forum I started wondering if there was a command line switch for it. Thanks! Still would like to see some form of exit/quit on the login dialog though.
  10. Simple request: Exit/Quit on the DCS main login/startup dialog. I'm behind a slow Internet connection and sometimes I will start the updater at a time that I am not planning on using the sim just so that it is ready to go when I get to sit down to use it. I have five installs of DCS (mission editor lap top, two server VMs, two actual pits with different hardware) so it's time intensive to update. After the updater runs it always goes to the login dialog and I have to use Task Mangler to exit. IIRC when sitting at the login prompt the GPU is engaged and it is burning more power than a simple login box implies. Minor quibble but worth mentioning. Also, would be good if double clicking on dcs_updater.exe did not start the sim after it completed. It should just return to the command prompt silently. I realize that in order to automate updates during initial game start up there needs some kind of hand off between these programs - maybe a wrapper app could be used here. Another tact: when starting dcs_updater.exe stand alone and asking whether to update or not, add a check/radio box to ask the user if they want to exit after update or launch DCS. Just a thought.
  11. Ensure the OS and NVIDIA drivers are set to performance mode over power saving, game mode, etc., etc. Revisit the DCS settings to ensure that everything matches to the old system. At a high level: The following things severely impact the CPU: Visibility Range Shadows Terrain Object Shadows Trees Visibility The following impact the GPU: Obviously resolution MSAA, SSAA, AAs in general. The following impacts system/GPU ram Textures Terrain textures Preload radius Your new machine should be able to match the old machine without breaking a sweat. But, to get your old machine to where it is now may have taken a while to get where it to where it is now if you are a tinkerer. Any DCS performance/visual mods ever installed for example? Taz's trees help FPS a touch for example. FWIW, 3600MHz RAM should be a sweet spot for AMD (cf: Infinity fabric) but the CLs could be better. I'm not convinced that it is enough of a deficiency to chase that hardware though. The relative difference in FPS from expected to generated is larger than what I'd expect the CL rating to affect if you follow what I mean. When you are sitting at the machine again, ensure that all the background crapware like virus scanners (anything more than Windows Defender is a waste of CPU/money/cycles), mobo vendor tool sets, sound card BS, joystick BS, social media BS, etc., etc. is not running. Check what's running and consuming CPU & memory via the task manager. Is your DCS install via Steam? Can you disable Steam as a background process if that is the case? Dunno - I'm standalone. Random thought - the CPU and/or GPU aren't thermal throttling, right? HTH
  12. Whatever the issue is that you are having it is not the CPU causing it. This sounds like a system optimization issue (i.e. software and/or OS level optimization) and nothing to do with the hardware set itself. Full disclosure: I have Intel 10700K, 11700k and 5600X CPUs running DCS and they are all within pissing match of one another - not really a big difference between them - at the seat of the pants without measuring. Long story short - you should be happy with your config once it is optimized - no need to change anything.
  13. Get the Sabre... learn it.. then get the MIG-15. It's a different kind of entertaining. Then F5... followed by MIG-21. That'll take you a while. Mosquito and F4U Corsair are inbound. If you want to try helis IMO the UH-1H, Mi-8, and Mi-24 are must haves. They feel good dynamically.
  14. Yep, I'm using the same pedals as well with the same amount of curve, or maybe it's 20, can't remember. The "sticktion" is annoying. I got the kit that removes the sticktion from the throttle and it works well, helps quite a bit. It was worth doing given the price. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/885326705/impulse-slider-mk2-thrustmaster-t16000m?transaction_id=2104522124&campaign_label=proteus_transaction_buyer_notification_boe_convo_url_treatment&email_sent=1603216657&euid=fVUtu9PR3kTMmyqNMKHNMPnB8vMs&eaid=966570422193&x_eaid=0d78dbe85a&link_clicked=4 I haven't researched if there is s similar mod for the pedals. For my setup I think it is more of an issue with the angles I am sitting relative to the pedals - maybe a more reclined position would help with the problem. I'm hoping to turn my attention to a "proper" simpit in the soonish future now that other projects are almost done. Then I'll see if I need to do something about the pedals. Maybe Authentikit pedals will be a thing by then.
  15. And an additional response to a spam bot at that.
  16. I typically trim on the down wind at a steady 120-140 depending on weather (with flaps and gear down) and that becomes the trim on touchdown. I might monkey with things a little if it is a long final like when practising touch-n-goes, particularly if the mission has a larger cross wind component. That said, sometimes when I feel the need to "LAND NOW!" I'll not trim much if at all and just nurse the stick and pedals to the ground as required. Regarding the yawing you are experiencing, you really need to be smooth when on the front wheels and feeding in the power to get up again, particularly if your rolling speed is under ~120-140. As expected, the slower the flow of air around the rudder the less authority it has so this is where fine grained rudder control comes into play with a good pedal setup. I don't know for certain but it's always "felt" to me that under ~100-110 or so large deflections of the rudder makes the air flow around the rudder stall (partially?) so it is less effective with larger swings of the rudder than at speeds that get the tail off the ground. Curves on your pedals help here a lot I find. HTH
  17. Supposedly a BoB set of planes is in the works by ED - all will be day one purchases for me. Don't know what to expect as to actual planes. Assuming early Spit and early 109 since really these would be tweaks of existing modules. Would really like to see a Hurricane. If a Gloster Gladiator could be done... technology demonstrator for DCS WWI. Ha! The I-16 is a great little ship. Lately I've taken to using it as my "sight seeing" plane instead of the Yak-52. My quick goto warbird is always the Spitfire. Once it's mastered that plane feels like it is directly connected to your nervous system - none of the others give me the same sense of involvement. 109 is close but I prefer the Spit for some reason. Probably due to the quaint, steam punk style cockpit in the Spitfire. I-16 has a similar appeal that way - even moreso. Mustang used to be my number two but that engine model... I've really been meaning to spend some time in the FWs but... time is hard to find to start from almost square one again re-learning them. Have the P-47 - haven't flown it at all other than a quick 5 mins of free flight when I first got it at release - see time comments above. Looking forward to the Corsair, Mosquito, and La-7[?!]. Someone really needs to do the P-40 to have fun with the Japanese AI assets coming with the Corsair. I hope that some of the AI models will come with early variants appropriate for the I-16 as well. All these planes are awesome. DCS WW2 has it's hiccups but to me it's the best WW2 sim out there.
  18. In the D9? The 'Stang is still borked as far as I know. I don't fly the D9 much so can't speak to whether it is a module or mission thing any more. But yeah, I get the frustration in general. Still fly mostly WWII props when I get a big enough block of time to play.
  19. Given context of build, this is what I'd do (i.e. don't fawk around): 11900k Spend some time researching the specific make/model of 3090 that will be offered. 64+GB of fast, low latency ram. Do your research/calcs on what works best with Intel 11th Gen - probably want 3200CL14 or 3600CL16 but verify. Pick a motherboard with as many PCI-e slots as practical. At some point you'll likely want to integrate new equipment like some crazy sound card, more high speed USB buses, custom boards with GPIO break out, whatever, etc. No Mini-ITX. I'd take a look at the motherboard manuals to see how the PCI-e slots have address lanes allocated depending on how they are populated. Also research what sound is included on the motherboard. Consider using something else depending on what comes with the board (research/reputation of onboard). 1000W PSU (see context) Largest, highest rated (Wattage) air cooler you can get. I'm a big fan of the Dark Rock Pro series - have a few. The cost for the thermal paste: that's new tube of paste plus labour to reapply I guess? Personally I wouldn't bother with it on new components and/or do it myself at some point down the road. HTH
  20. Whatever it takes to get a passable Flying Tigers scenario based out of the Marianas. P-40s plus something Japanese and historical - or do A6M* for old timey movie segments.

    Corsair Hype!

Practice, practice, practice. It's not unstable - it's super precise. (to be clear - I'm not in anyway suggesting I'm great with it - but there are moments of brilliance where the platform really shines)

    Corsair Hype!

Maybe at some point do the land-based 1A? Reduce the weight, disable the switches, reduce the inertia... Can this be effectively done as a mod - .lua changes? Lightweight monster of a flying beast sounds fun. I always gravitate to the Spit and the 109 in DCS because they "feel" so light relative to the others.

    ships

Yes, workable. Ugra has raised the detail level on the Turkish mainland north of the island as well.
  24. FWIW, knowing what I know now versus what I didn't know when I bought the module, I'd still buy it today. For just tootling around and enjoying flying solo it is still a great module today. I use it regularly.
