I think most would be surprised how much of the SP player base uses DCS as just a flight simulator or a learning simulator versus actual combat. For me it's > 90% FS and < 10% combat. Warbirds and the F86/Mig15 combo mostly for combat in spite of pretty much having all the modules of all eras. When I sit down at DCS it tends to be to blow off steam or to "rest my brain" from other projects/work. Just flying around and/or messing around in the mission editor is enough for that. There's a certain amount of "Walter Mitty"-ness and "simulating" lost opportunities from decades ago as well. Combat with modernish jets is complicated. I typically don't mess with that level of DCS unless I've been away from work for a week or more - a pattern I've realized after writing this message. But that's just me. With that as context, I figure helicopter missions with sling loads, fire fighting, whatever would something I'd be more likely to do than combat. The whole "take ED away from work that needs doing" argument is specious at best. If ED sees a need to address a new niche they will reorganize and/or staff up as appropriate. In the last ~1.5 years I've been playing with DCS, ED has made huge QC improvements, changes, additions, etc. They are on the right path and if adding new types of missions is something they want to pursue I'm sure they'll do it well. CL-415, or other similar aircraft, would be a day one purchase for me.

Windows Defender is totally adequate. Installing a third party root kit (Avast/McAffee/whomever) is not good security.

NZXT Build - 2 failed Nvidia 3070's
reece146 replied to Chops's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I had wanted to buy a 3070 recently and my local vendor had Zotac 3070s and Gigabyte 3060 Tis (and 3090s but I'm not convinced that is a good use of money $/value wise given latest, inflated prices - there's better toys to spend $3k upon). They tried really hard to steer me away from the Zotac and really firmly suggested I get their 3 year, no questions warranty if I went with the Zotac. I ended up doing the Gigabyte because if that was the expectation I can't be bothered with the hassle for the sake of a few FPS. I bought the warranty on the Gigabyte as well because if you've heard anything about the Gigabyte RMA process it likely hasn't been positive. Now, no questions asked is one thing but if I show up to the store with a failed card I doubt they will have any stock to get me rolling again the same day... but, hopefully it won't come to that. $0.02 -
Is your computer a generic PC or a PC from HP, Dell, Lenovo, whomever? The text you provided tells us your CPU is a i7-2600K. I am guessing the external USB connections are going to be slow since the machine is quite old by computer standards. It also might not have many HDD/SDD ports. If you can verify how many storage drives (HDD and SSD) you have in your system and how many you can add total that would be helpful. If you don't want to take the machine apart to look for ports you can look on the BIOS setup screen - it should say what motherboard you have and then you can google. I would get an SSD to be mounted inside the case if it will fit. Ideally you would have Windows, DCS and the Windows pagefile.sys all on SSDs. If the machine is a brand name like HP or Dell it might have an external SATA connection but not likely. HTH

We need more information to make suggestions. Can you describe your system? In general yes, but more details required. Bus connect speeds with respect to the vintage of your machine's external connectors and what else is available within the machine could be factors for a better solution. Also, if you are experiencing stutters, it might be more a system tuning or capacity issue than a hardware issue.

Small ddr3 memory upgrade 16gb to 32gb question
reece146 replied to erick's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Maybe do some more shopping around - pretty sure DDR3 is worth doing. I had a i3770k based machine and it was a noticeable improvement going to 32GB even if I couldn't overclock above 1600. Also, SSD all the things! That can be transferred to a new machine if it comes to that. FWIW, I used to run without a pagefile with 32GB and was pretty much completely stutter free on this old beastie. -
I've noticed some weirdness with non-ED liveries at times. Is this an ED livery? If not, can you reproduce with an ED supplied livery?
-
I'll be a broken record saying this... If you have any intention of recording your flights and don't already have a capture card, then getting the non-F variant gives you the Intel iGPU upon which you can install Intel QuickSync and use that as a capture device in OBS and not affect your dedicated GPU's FPS. Oh my! Will have to make some time to try it tomorrow evening.

FWIW, I've had the Suntsag 'start from ground' adjustment of the lua all along without issue - expect that whatever ED changed with 2.7 is similar/same. I haven't gone digging for confirmation. -
PC hardware noob looking for advice...
reece146 replied to RhineHornet's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
You could return the drive as suggested or adapt it if it is more convenient. I've had good luck with these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078PTFB5H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078PTGJ4Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 They are PCI-e x4 cards. IIRC that motherboard only has PCI-e v3.0 on the x16 slot. The rest are PCI-e v2.x. It's not a big deal - still will be faster than SSD through the SSD connectors. QNINE products seem decent. I bought several of these in 2019 and they have been humming away in a bunch of my lab equipment ever since without any issues. I used to run DCS on the same motherboard ( P8Z77-V) and CPU (i7-3770K). I overclocked to 4.5-4.7 MHz with a good air cooler with minimal issues. It made a huge difference to DCS. The machine also had 32GB of RAM (not OC). I don't use it currently - was a "hand me down" to my wife and it is running Elementary Linux. HTH -

SWAPR works fine with 2.7 - if anyone was wondering. My SWAPR enabled missions work the same as before in 2.7. -
Anyone thinking of getting the Intel i7 11700k this week?
reece146 replied to jib's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Funny - in spite of "pooh-poohing" the 11700K above I just bought one. But, the 10700k is staying in my DCS rig. The 11700k is going into one of my Linux workstations. I was eyeing the 10900k for this Linux machine but the 11700k seems to have similar multi-core performance as the 10900k AND it has a better, Xe based iGPU. That way I can slave the discrete GPU to a virtual machine and have the Linux host still be good enough for workstation tasks with Xe. Use case and all that... -
Just ordered a new computer. Will it run DCS?
reece146 replied to Zimmerdylan's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
This may be interesting to you Heed RAM comments. Should be a perfectly serviceable machine at 1080 or maybe even 1440 with the simpler flights/missions and aircraft. Larger NVME/SSD is definitely worth doing. If it were me, Windows + Pagefile on the M.2 SSD, get another M.2 drive for DCS, use the installed HDD for everything else non-game related. -
It's unfortunate that AMD CPUs do not have an integrated GPU. On Intel you can tell OBS to use Intel QuickSync (iGPU) to capture and your discrete GPU (2080 Super) remains in use for DCS exclusively. I use this method all the time and there are zero frame drops. You could experiment with a secondary discrete GPU. Be mindful of what that does to the PCI channel allocation (check motherboard manual). Someone above mentioned an external capture box / card - those work too - are effectively just a discrete GPU with fancy software from a VAR.

Anyone thinking of getting the Intel i7 11700k this week?
reece146 replied to jib's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
If it were me I'd wait a week or two - rumour mill says big price cuts on 10700K in the next week or so. 11700K is not a compelling chip - I'd skip it. $0.02 -
Also, some people just like the trainer aircraft because they like the aircraft.

I have the TMs. they work well enough but I would prefer something with pedals wider apart (I'm over six feet - feel restricted). There is no real sense of on centre feel so I've added a dead zone to try to compensate. Wrt quality, you'd have to be a gorilla to break them. I've had them a year with no issues with the electronics.

Would really like to get the Bonnie with static or AI Trackers. Is the F-18 too big to operate from this ship? Guessing A-4s could work without issue?
-
I'll speculate that in a real airplane, placing one foot in front of the other provides enough opposite force on the rudder without it becoming tiring for the times required. Fighting a spring is different from a counter balanced or counter loaded control surface. I think with a P-51 running all tanks plus bags and flying 8 hours or more the trim on all the axes probably became required equipment. But yeah - almost wish our desktop controllers had "trim" settings independently of what is modelled in sim.
-
Weird - yes - now they work.

ugh - getting 404s on the download link of these four: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2822868/ https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2775305/ https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2774061/ https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/2774060/ Maybe needs the asset re-uploaded? Something wonky on the site backend I guess.
