Just been reading about the limitations of Iceman currently in the module, with him basically being a basic autopilot and is extremely limited in what he can do.

While I understand developing two impressive AI in time for the EA, would have been a massive undertaking and quite likely would delay the module by some bit.

This obviously causes quite an issue for those of us who want to learn the Rio role.

How for example are we meant to practice, cold and dark startups, landings, fence in, fence out, radar intercepts etc.

I know technically we could keep jumping in between the seats during different stages of the flight, although this would be incredibly annoying and very immersive breaking. Not to mention adding significantly to the work load of the trainee Rio, who would have to learn BOTH roles at the same time, which is a awful lot to ask of anyone, let alone someone who’s trying to learn one of the most advanced radar systems ever developed.

The only other option is waiting until your pilot comes online, but again Rios will now be restricted to flying only when others are on which will again significantly reduce the amount of time they can practise.

So just wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue?

I have my pilots to fly with, so it's not really an issue for me.

i think there will always be more pilots than RIOs.

Maybe you can find someone who will let you in on a MP Server.

You will have "Iceman" AI at your disposal. It will not be fully fledged pilot but you can order him around. From what was stated, he will not be able to engage in a fight though, only in flying as ordered (how where...).

But from what is stated, he can only do level flying with some minor turns.

He can’t Takeoff / Land, intercept targets / bomb / or do anything other than basic autopilot flying.

He’s only designed to be used for short periods, while you jump into the backseat, do a quick search of radar then jump back. So not really much use at the moment for training.

I’m hoping he will improve to the standard of Jester during the development, but that obviously may take a while.

It would be nice if the AI pilot could follow the waypoints and do the mission set in the editor, just like regular AI planes can.

No, like you say our goal for Iceman is exactly that.

This isn't as easy as it sounds as the regular AI is completely off when you have a human player in the aircraft.

Really damn, I’ve always assumed the Iceman AI would get similar AI as Jester obviously I figured it would take time to be developed, as otherwise it pretty much wipes out any chance of us learning to be an effective Rio in SP

So that news is extremely disappointing to me, considering the main reason I’ve picked up the F14 was the Rio seat.

Guess I’m stuck with only using the F14 when others are online then.:cry:

It is simply too great of a challenge atm to develop a good enough pilot AI for an F-14 to only be crewed by a human RIO. The goal has always been for us to allow a human pilot to fly without a RIO, not the other way around.

That said I'm not gonna say it won't happen in the future but it will take a lot of additional work.

My suggestions atm would be to use Iceman or active pause to train. Maybe using a mission with a hot spawn already in the air.

I'll suggest to the mission designers that we could add a mission set up for that.

Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate that, the AI you’ve developed for Jester is already mind blowing. It’s my fault for assuming something since the Rio seat is fully developed.

However a Rio mission would be very very greatfully received so we can at least practice radar intercepts.

Oh I have a buddy lined up, hell I have 2 lined up who want to be pilots. The only issue is I work shifts and they work standard days, so we are only online at the same time on a wed evening every other week.

Oh I know that problem, just the other way round... those on shifts are usually the ones I tend to see like once every six weeks or so (and if it fails just once, it's three buckin' months!), because they never have time when "ordinary" ones do have since they either work or sleep. I mean, they usually don't even have weekends that are on actual weekends. I keep wondering how they can even have social life apart from their jobs at all... aj-hm.png

I know how that goes. I have a target range mission thats fairly low threat but good for getting used to stuff. im really patient and wouldnt mind flying you around while you try things out

I think you will be able to hook up with a lot of pilots online... what are your shifts, actually? I am working regular work days and am usually available after 6pm CET :)

Cheers for all the offers guys, they are much appreciated. I will keep an eye open for you all online.

Shifts are 6 on 3 off. Earlies, lates, nights and days and a mixture of 8, 10 and 12 hr days. But the best part is, work can change them depending on the services needs up to 48hrs before hand.

Makes arranging anything, or having a social life almost impossible.

I wonder if it would be possible to make it so you can save a track file of a mission you flew and jump in the rear instead of the front, so you are responding to the original jester commands?

I remember those days. Worked rotating shift, 24/7 on-call for over ten years. It was fine when I was young but you could watch the older guys literally aging in front of your eyes as those back shifts dragged on.

I’ve been working human hours (06~1430) for the last few years and I’ll never go back. I’ve declined shift job offers for close to double the money I’m making now because it’s just not worth it to me anymore.

I hope you find a few pilots that can work with your schedule. Good luck Cowboy!
