Interesting video on benchmarking in DCS

Hello all, I'm sure this has asked before but a 5 minute fury of google searches and a quick question on Hoggits discord didn't answer my question, so I've come to the forums. I have been hunting for a new GPU to replace my poor life decision of a 1650 4gb. Heres the catch: I am confident I can get a 3060 or a 3060Ti and the main difference is VRAM. Unless theres another massive improvement on the 3060Ti over the 3060, the 3060 has more VRAM than the Ti. Would it be lucrative or even worth it to sacrifice some computing power for more VRAM? I'm not sure how VRAM saturated DCS can be because obviously I'm always pegged at 4gb regardless. In general I don't know what DCS uses the most of a graphics card. Thanks for all your help! Smooth skies, Mordant

Hello all. I will try to keep this as brief as possible yet still detailed. I’m building a gaming PC specifically for DCS World. May also play Falcon BMS as well. I have done a ton of research over the last several months. Unfortunately the majority of gamers play COD, fortnite, etc. etc. Not a lot of info specifically related to DCS World. So here I am. The following is my build so far. Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Case Fans: 3 high speed 120mm Intake (2 front 1 bottom) 2 high speed 120mm Exhaust (1 back 1 top front) 1 Standard speed 120mm Exhaust (top Back) All Fans Bequiet Light Wings RGB Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 5800X CPU Cooler: BeQuiet Dark Rock PRO 4 (2 Fans on cooler) RAM: Gskill Trident Z RGB 64GB (32x2) DDR4 3200 16-18-18-38 SDD: Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 1TB NVME M.2 Thermal Paste: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut PSU: EVGA 850 GA GOLD OS: WIN 10 Home Now comes the million doller question (or 2). Budget limits my GPU so no 3080 or 3090. I could spend hours (and have) on gpu research. So of course its time for the experts to weigh in. I have narrowed down my selections to a few different cards. They are as followes…. ASUS ROG STRIX 3060 V2 OC Edition VRam 12 gb Boost Clock 1912 mhz (oc mode) CUDA Cores 3584 Mem Speed 15 gbps Mem Interface 192 bit Max res 7680x4320 Power slot 1 x 8-pin Current Price $695 *NOTE: wanted this in the 3060 Ti however according to specs its about 5 mm to long for my case. EVGA RTX 3060 Ti FTW Ultra Gaming VRam 8 GB Boost Clock 1800 mhz CUDA Cores 4864 Mem Speed 14000 Mem Interface 256 bit Max res 7680x4320 Power Slot 2 x 8 pin or 6+2 pin Current Price $886 So personal preference im leaning more towards the ASUS ROG due to RGB effects and 2 fan ports on the card (nice touch if I need more fan control as the MB only has 4 fan headers one of those dedicated for CPU). So what is more important in DCS. Boost clock and memory speed OR amount of dedicated VRAM? I can and will ignore personal preference if there is a worthy gain in performance and visual clarity by using the EVGA 8gb card. Also that said I would like to get the smoothest and visually appealing picture quality possible. Any recommendations as to gaming monitors. Also 1 or 3 monitors with Tracker IR. Not getting into VR yet as those cards I don’t believe will give a decent performance in VR (and budget at the current moment). Also haven’t yet but will get into multi-player at some point. This is my last and most important piece of hardware left to buy so any help here would be awesome!

Coming back to DCS after a long time putting together a new build. Currently have the following components: i5 11400 Galax 2070 super OC Wanting to know the capabilities of the gpu, in particular and if I would be able to run a quest 2 decently? Likewise do I need 32 gb of ram? Any other recommendations are much appreciated.

I have done several performance tests of my newest hardware and compared them with each other. I have used DCS World 2.8.3.38090 Open Beta with Single Thread ST and Multiple Threads MT with an Instant Mission: AH-64D, map "Marianas" - Battle for Saipan: Dawn Invasion" After starting the mission, I have pressed OK, then [Right-STRG + Break/Pause] for two times (for displaying the frame rate) and then I have pressed the space bar. Directly after that I have checked the frame rate. I know that my graphic settings are very hard.....: null All CPUs as well as GPUs are slightly overclocked, except the CPU Intel I5-13500. Hey, Mr. Grey, Wags and the Eagle Dynamics Team... I just wanted to extend to you a hearty, "Thank You" and "Well Done" regarding the current state of DCS Open Beta. You can see in my signature that I'm running DCS on a humble GTX 1070 and not-brand-new 8700K CPU. As slow, gradual improvements are often not noticed or acknowledged by users, it just occurred to me that I'm tooling around in DCS, at full 4K and plenty of new clouds, units, in MP, SP, etc. with the settings below; all the while fluctuating between 30-50 FPS, and remarkably smooth in most cases, even when down in the 30s. There are obviously some challenges with my hardware (read: "Supercarrier with it's tower lights on and rain droplets on the canopy ), but overall - VERY pleased with the performance I'm getting in an era where there's no way I can afford to upgrade my GPU. This is a testament to all the work you've put in, all the while juggling MANY different modules, demands, etc. Well done! - W

Q1) Best GPUs for 1440p? Q2) Best GPUs for VR?
-
Hi, You can see my hardware in signature, I'd like to upgrade my gpu (nvidia1080Ti) to a 3060 12gb, is it worth? Is it better for DCS (or also for the non combat sim) to have this one or a better card like 3070Ti with "only" 8gb? My resolution 3840x1600 38" wide, generally I prefer not using VR but ... with a better gpu who knows... Thank u guys!

RX 6700 XT vs RTX 3060 Ti in DCS (VR?)
Aerophobia posted a topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Before I start, let me just say that I have done a lot of research and talked to a lot of people about these two cards, and from what I've determined they are practically equal in terms of performance outside of DCS. The main difference specs-wise I have determined between these two cards that the 6700XT has a lower bandwidth (196 bit bus) and higher VRAM (12GB) and the 3060 Ti has a higher bandwidth (256 bit bus) and lower VRAM (8GB). 50% of the people I've talked to say get the 6700 XT for the extra VRAM as that's more important than than the bandwidth, and 50% of people say the opposite advocating for the 3060Ti. Honestly, the specs mean nothing to me now. I just want to know which would perform better in DCS from those who've actually used these cards. The setup I'll be using: Ryzen 5 5600 32GB 3200 DDR4 2560 x 1080 100hz monitor (a 1080p ultrawide) I also want to take VR into consideration. I have a higher tolerance for stutters, lower fps, etc, and I have a Rift S, which has a lower resolution than most VR headsets, so I believe I'll be fine playing on it with a GPU from this price range. If anyone here has used both cards their input would be greatly appreciated! EDIT: Another thing to consider is that under current sales in Australia the RX 6700 XT is $600AUD ($420USD) and the 3060 Ti is $680AUD ($475USD)- 14 replies

Hello everybody! First time posting and it’s gonna be a long one. I am currently chasing the elusive VR Dragon and my adventures lead into a dark and damp cave. So I stand before you in hopes of illumination of the colorless fog surrounding my problem. I am using the Quest 2 via Link. I don’t need high environmental graphics, but what I do need are stable 45ASW frames and a readable cockpit. After extensive optimization I made DCS run beautifully. So, problem solved for single player I guess – lets make multiplayer work next. And this is where the problem starts. Of the bat the performance is still great. 45ASW stable at 60-70% utilization, so there is plenty headroom. But after a variable amount of time spend on the server (1h / 30min / 10min) the GPU utilization suddenly ramps up to 100% (step-input like) and will stay there for no apparent reason. FPS drop to anywhere between 10-20. GPU will stay pinned even after leaving the server. Only after closing DCS will the GPU return to “normal” behavior. Returning to the server will yield another 10-30min of perfectly smooth flying until it hits the wall again. In a thread discussing importance of VRAM @Hawkeye_UK posted a paragraph where he pretty much describes exactly what I am experiencing here. He describes it as a function of respawing, changing aircrafts or opening F10. Tho it does seem like those action accelerate the occurrence of the GPU going up in flames I also experience this by just flying a single airframe. After 10-30mins BOOM 100% GPU, Game Over. I tried virtually everything I could dig up – but the bottom line is no matter how low I turn the graphics this behavior will still occur. Tested on low (~5 player) and high population servers (~15-32 players). So this is more or less a sanity check for me. I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me if there is something that can be done about this (e.g. getting more VRAM ☹) or if this is known and accepted behavior. Hey Guys, I was gifted a new Desk Top for Christmas. Here are the specs." HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF- intel core- 9th Gen-i5-9600-256 GB SSD-16GB Ram-3.1 GHz- Intel UHD 630- Win 10". I'm having a really hard time trying to figure out exactly which Gpu upgrade for this desktop. It's nearly impossible to fly let alone dogfight with any clarity at all even at low default settings. I'm afraid if I can't get something figured out I'm just going to uninstall DCS and move on to something different, whatever that might be. This is just a hobby but its getting so frustrating and I don't have the funds to spend on an expensive GPU when I'm not sure it would even solve the issues. ALL of you guys are way above me on PC specs and Hardware specs than I will ever be. Kinda getting on up in age ,lol.Checking my Fps and was getting at max 11 FPS with everything turned off or lowest setting. Help me out guys!!

Just wanted to say thanks to team ED for delivering one of the best updates of the year with the introduction of DLAA/DLSS etc. I flew in VR online last night, something I rarely do in multiplayer due to the frame rate issues, and when i do i normally downtune the graphics and everything else to make it playable without stutters and freezes. Last night I forgot to do this adjustment, and it didnt care. The DLAA settings allowed smooth gameplay whilst maintaining visual fidelity, something I had to chose between before. Now it appears I don't! The new shadows are just superb, give a real depth to the environment which wasn't there before, and at times it was that good I could have said it was real. Some croppped VR screenshots. By far not the best visual quality you'll see, but for my 2080S to cope with a G2 at this grx setttings I am happy. Still going to get a 4080Ti though

Hey everyone, I'm planning to upgrade my GPU from 8 GB 3060Ti to 24 GB 7900XTX only to get better performance flying in DCS in my Quest 3 (steady 90 FPS and excellent quality) I did an extensive search, and I found mixed results! Apparently, in some cases, having an AMD CPU helps the AMD GPU boost their performance and most of the negative reviews come from Intel CPUs, but couldn't find any tests for DCS to compare My specs are as below: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 5.4GHz 40MB (8-Core) Memory: 64 GB RAM (2x 32GB 6000MHz DDR5) SSD: 2x 2TB Kingstone KC3000 M.2 NVMe 7000MB/s

As others have noted, DCS doesn't like GPU overclocking too much. Core Clock OC does little and above a certain value it creates white dots in the sky, if too high DCS CODs. I can get my 4090 overclocked stable without the dots by +104. Voltage slider also +100. However, I played with the Memory Clock slider and all the way at +2000 I have much stabler fps and far less micro stutters. Then DCS CODs. But it's stable for me at +1900. I make sense of it, as DCS is VRAM hungry, highest GPU Memory Clock values will probably give stabler frames. 11900KF, All Core 5.3GHz, 240mm water cooled MSI Coreliquid V2, VCore adaptive -0.090mV, 4090 Ventus 3x

So I have an 11700F in a pre built pc (judge away) been fighting bugs in DCS VR since inception but finally got the base game (I play on standalone and mostly pve on base maps). Downloaded multithread beta and did some testing with tracks between MT and OG style threading. On MT, with the in game FPS counter, it says it's CPU capped, however, I get no bottleneck notifier in single thread. Frame difference between the two is 3-5FPS but inconsistently. Any ideas other than a new CPU and MOBO??? Full specs in comments- help me find the missing frames please!!! I did some additional testing unfortunately im not smart enough to track logs or explain this but I'll try. Capped at 45fps in Quest software, I can consistently get 35-40fps in Single thread by turning basically everything down to low and a couple items to medium. However, same exact settings in MT, I still get wild fluctuations from 22fps to mayyyybe 32 was the highest I saw. The only explanation I have for this is that my single thread game is installed to the nvme and multithread beta is installed on an external USB 3.0 ssd. I MAY have answered my own question but im coming to the pros seeking advice and correction if I haven't. I'm not looking for wild 120fps on the oculus, just a good balance of being able to read DDIs and go from being heads down in the cockpit to heads up without frame drop or hitching that causes me to miss things. My tests were done using a low level track about 60sec long on an empty caucuses map in the F18, and similar results were duplicated in the uh1h. Hi, I'd like to try DCS in VR but I had some feedback from friends telling me that some headsets that don't have a very good pixel density make it difficult to read what's on the MFDs etc. Is it the case with the Reverb G2 ? (I'm thinking of getting this one) Also, still about the Reverb G2, does it give you the horse blinders effect or is the fov wide enough ? And finally, using a G2 with a 3080Ti, flying above Syria with all settings cranked up to the max, not CPU bottlenecked or out of RAM so the GPU can use its full power, how many fps can I realistically expect in average? Finally, what's the compatibility of it and DCS ? Is it quite plug and play or does it need another software to fine tune a ton of settings (like a TrackIR) ? Thanks!

The following post includes both issue and the solution I have found after testing and troubleshooting for the sake of reproduction, testing and fixing (if possible). Hey everyone, For weeks I have been plagued by FPS issues during multiplayer sessions on well known Servers such as BlueFlag, the Growling Sidewinder as well as Graywolfs Grayflag Server, pretty much making the game unplayable near ground, in cockpit or as a whole. These issues are severe, since the game drops from [my] regular 80-110fps (depending on terrain and surroundings) to 12-30fps. I was extensively trying to find the cause of this issue - especially since, mostly playing online and PvP (DCS competitive too), it meant that there was not much to do for me in game with frames always being this low. Knowing that AMD never had the best or most stable GPU drivers, I was almost certain that it was related to my drivers - especially since that issue popped up (again) after updating to the newest one a few weeks back. I tried out different DCS Graphics settings (I think i might have tested out every possible combination by now), clean installing different GPU drivers (with DDU ensuring a true clean install), tried testing it with and without community mods, and so on and so forth. The most annoying part of this issue is that it felt unreproducible, unpredictable and persistent until I restart my game, only to sometimes realize that the issue comes back after a couple of seconds or minutes after slotting into a plane. The following findings have been learned with a vanilla DCS install (No Mods, Full Repair etc.). Trying out different recent AMD drivers did not seem to improve the situation, until I decided to turn off my Radeon ReLive feature. This feature records the last x seconds for you to save on pressing a Hotkey - an instant replay feature also known as NVIDIA Shadow Play on NVIDIA GPUs. Here's where I found my solution for the issue, with which I hope the Testers or ED Team can investigate if possible. Issue: - DCS performance (Single or Multithreaded versions affected alike) drops from regular >80fps to <30fps on busy multiplayer servers (unreliably reproduceable in Single Player) Fix/Workaround: Cause: Instant Replay Feature (I can only be sure about AMD's ReLive, as I dont own an NVIDIA card) Fix 1: Turn off Radeon ReLive feature Fix 2: Set Video Codec from AVC to HEVC. Switching from AVC to HEVC also fixes the issue with ReLive enabled. The issue could also be observed while recording DCS with an AVC-Codec, with the frames dropping to mentioned 12-30fps during recording, only to go up to [my] regular ~100fps - so recording with AVC (ReLive disabled) would still cause the frames to drop. Now, I know that this is strongly related to AMD and their drivers - however I have not observed any similar behavior in any other game but DCS. As I am lacking the tools, I can only guess to what the root of the issue is. I very much hope that posting this bug report including my solution might help out others that have the same issue, as well as get the attention by ED/AMD to maybe check it out. (not going to argue about how useful or sensible an instant replay feature is, thats everyone's own choice and I like saving highlights). If you need logs, trackfiles or other information that I have not been able to include here, please notify me. Thanks. With kind regards, Asphelite System Specs: Mainboard: MSI B550 Gaming-Plus CPU: AMD R5 3600X RAM: Patriot Viper 32GB@3200mhz CL16 (XMP enabled) GPU: (Aorus) AMD RX5700XT PSU: 1000W G80+ OS: Win10 Tested Driver Versions: 23.8.x and newer. Those two settings always seem to give mixed results or were outright detrimental to performance in DCS. What's the current status for the two? Hi I am going to upgrade my rig with new GPU and monitor. Now I am using Nvidia 1070 Ti and a 1080 monitor. My idea was to start with GPU and monitor later, but the shortage and price level on GPU's do that I want to wait with GPU. My question: Will my 1070 Ti be able to run DCS on a 1440 monitor decently, until better consumer times? Does anybody have any experience on this? See you up there.

Unfortunately the latest update has brought back some similar problems as the original 2.9 update did for me. I only seem to get lag in when I am CPU bound, so I thought I would turn down all system settings that mention CPU usage, the result was I was even more CPU bound? So I upped all the sliders you can while in game, clutter/grass, forest visibility etc, and straight away became GPU bound most of the time and much smoother gameplay. I have seen this stressing the graphics card "fix" when I was looking for a solution to the lag that 2.9 introduced for me. So what what settings affect GPU more than CPU?
