Those pesky enemy fighters...

Hello, everyone, I'm new to the forums here at ED. I've been playing DCS for at least 2 years, with at least one year in A-10C. I consider myself to be very proficient with the plane, I can almost fly any single player mission, complete my objectives, and return home. I've recently tried my hand at multiplayer and I can dodge and evade most things like SAMs, but enemy fighters are the death of me. No matter what I try, like flying less that 100ft from the ground and staying in the mountains, I manage to get pinged up by their radars. After that I'm dead meat, I try to beam and lose them, but they manage to keep on me and fire their missiles. And when they fire, I can't seem to shake the missiles, the R-77 is a deadly sucker...

  • Is there any techniques to avoid detection from fighters?
  • Is there a way to shake a fighter after he's pinged you on the RWR?
  • What's the best evasive manuver if after all of this he manages to fire on you?

Thanks

Are you playing online? Try to get an escort fighter to fly with you. The truth is there is never a perfect technique or maneuver that will counter a situation. I"t's a lot more fluid than that. With that said, the best you can really do here is preventative. Plan a route that may flank these enemy units. For example, take a mission where you launch from vaziani and enemies launch from mozdok, minvody, etc. Fly toward the coast. Land and refuel if possible, then continue a wide path. the fighters may not expect you from that angle.

And in 10 hours at the height of your ambush the server mission is already over and it doesn't matter anyway. Fighter escort is the answer but half the jocks don't perform escort very well.

Take an ALQ-184 jammer and turn it on. Hope for the best. lol that's about all you really can do, I tend to avoid servers packed with enemy fighters

I think that's why the USAF wants to get rid of the A-10s....

Yes because the USAF has given up the notion of combined arms support in favour of lone wolf air frames that need no help defending themselves even though they aren't A2A fighters.

This is specifically why the B-52 and AC-130 are still being retained. They posses superior anti-fighter capability. The B-52's enormous radar cross section in particular will be such an anachronism in the tech wars of the future that Russian radar systems will shut down due to incredulity.

Meanwhile the Apache gunship will remain invulnerable to enemy fighters due to a badass factor of 11 which causes any Russian who attempts to attack it to shut down like an android in an episode of the original Star Trek.

Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.

do you fly the shortest route from the airbase to your target? do a proper threat appreciation and PLAN your route.

but like has been mentioned, even with the best flight plan on the planet, you might get in, but you probably wont get out without some top cover. if you are without support and insist on trying anyway... once you do see that RWR light up, look for some decent terrain masking, and drop down so low that you are mowing the grass. once the RWR drops off, change your bearing, and go like a bat out of hell (as much as the old girl can).

No. I usually go into mission editor, unhide all the enemy vehicles and reset the way-points onto them.

I like to think of this as utilising pre-mission recon/satellite surveillance, but really it's just cheating.

Thanks for all the advice, I guess I'll just have to secure a fighter escort everytime there are bandits in the area. Just one more question: Is there a way to lose a fighter that's pinging you at max range. I've tried hitting the weeds, jamming, beaming, and releasing chaff but they still manage to find me.

I wonder if they're cheating somehow.

I've been practicing with the AI in the mission editor and they enemy plane still manages to find and kill me after taking all the above steps.

Well AI planes are more inclined to cheat than real players anyways :) They are much better at hunting you down ;)

Join the servers teamspeak if they have one and ask for escort. That works also if you spot some bandits when doing CAS, just ask for CAP support. If you play with no teamspeak you can also try to ask in teamchat. But be sure you ask in TEAMCHAT and not open for all players :D

It is really annoying to have "Every Single" enemy pilot set up with the skills of an "Ace".

Loosing 5of7 of my Flight Team in a fur ball is not realistic at all. I come in from a distance in an instant action mission, even with unlimited ammo the results are the same. I fire off Aim9s like a mad man from close range they dip dodge and I can't do the same to their missiles. very annoying reducing the enemy levels is the only thing that helps and that just ruins the emersion for me. I prefer even odds with like skilled pilots. Until I become an "Ace" that is. Even then I don't believe the skill level will be competitive with this AI set as it is. But I do enjoy the sim. for all of its other (and there are many) merits.

With that said I am sure this issue has low priority on the must fix totem pole. And I am having to much fun to really care that much about it myself.

I think that most A-10 mission planners would avoid any contact with fighter aircraft. It just isn't built for that kind of action. I have fighter aircraft turned off in my settings where I can for this very reason. It would be suicide for an A-10 to go up against a fighter. What about the Aim-9 you say? That was added for pilot comfort I surmise. Fly missions the A-10 is designed for and you will be a lot less frustrated.

I was having problems with fighters in the 104th server but I finally shot a enemy F-15 down. I always carry four 9m's in the 104th. Last week I went head to head against a F-15 when I was trying to do my A2G. Here is the video of the sortie

. I cut out all the boring stuff, but if you just want to see the F-15 fight go to 9:10 in the video. As we went head on, he fired a missile at me and I fired mine and it blew his missile up right in my face. Then I turned around and fired another at him and sent him to the ground :)

Chime in much there champ?

I can tell you that in real life, various assets will be as such the intel picture will give a fairly good idea of the disposition of the enemy. And as I eluded too, its not just the disposition of the threats that will shape your planning, its the terrain. In fact the enemy and terrain are really (apart from the mission itself obviously) the most important elements in formulating your plan.

you might call that cheating. I would call it planning. If you find yourself in a fair fight, you've f***ed up. simple as that.
