What would be the best opponent for the MiG-21bis?

What do you believe would be the best opponent for the MiG-21 to go up against if it was brought into DCS World? Which would you pick if you could have a module for one of them made? Options are in the poll but feel free to write one in. Decided not to be too specific with the variants or block numbers just so voters wouldn't be picky.

F-4 or F-104. I voted the Phantom.

Although I'd prefer a Starfighter if only single seat is possible.

For the purposes of analogous comparisons, either the EE Lightning or F-5A Freedom Fighter.

Historically, the F-4 and Mirage III are THE opponents for the MiG-21, but the MiG-21bis was relatively late to the party and in reality faced Israeli F-15s and F-16s more than F-4Es. A late slatted USAF F-4E is a fair match based on production year and forces in Europe.

 

However, in terms of play balance, the F-5E vs the MiG-21bis is very interesting as well as F-104C/F-104G/F-104S vs the MiG-21bis.

 

I want the F-4E, and I would still be very happy with a Mirage III, F-5, or F-104, but I would settle for an F-15A if it meant getting a historically correct opponent quicker.

 

A SAAB Draken and or Viggen would be absolutely fantastic, too if there is enough information available to model them correctly!

F-8 Crusader. Single seat, similar performance (with the MiG21 being somewhat faster and significantly faster climbing), similar weapons loadout, and historically engaged in combat in Vietnam

Ok,, the poll says preferred opponent for the MiG-21Bis so my preferred ride for aerial engagement is the Tomcat.:thumbup:

Now, the topic of the thread is "what would be the best opponent" so I would choose an aircraft of similar size and capability... Mirage F1. Historically the MiG-21Bis has squared off with Israeli/Iranian F-4E Phantoms (and F-4D's in the case of Iran) so if taken in a historical perspective that would be the way to go.

While F-4 is indeed quite a correct historical foe that met the MiG-21s, my candids for "ideal" rivals would be :

 

- Vought F-8 Crusader : Met each other (although not the Bis I guess) and up-close their performance would be similar for dogfights (I'd expect F-8 to turn somewhat better, but Mig to be faster and better climber and happier at high angles of attack). Though, I am not sure if F-8 has better or worse versions of AIM-9 compared to Bis' missiles.

- Mirage III & Mirage 5 : Historical match, interesting dogfight matches to one another, sensors & weapons neither far superior nor inferior between each.

- Northrop F-5 : Again similar sensor quality, but F-5 can use better missiles. F-5 is more maneurable, but slower, should be interesting to come up with strategies against other on both planes.

- Draken : Because the thing just looks damn cool and someone needs to simulate those old SAAB fighters already :))

- Viggen : Sensor & weapon capability wise a bit more F-4 like than Mig like but, just refer to my sentence for Draken :P and since it's a single seater should be easier to do than F-4.

 

Having said these, I'd love an F-4 as well but, I feel above are, in that order, more suitable rivals. F-4E can carry much more and much better missiles (of both BVR and WVR varieties) and has a better radar. While in dogfight or guns Bis may best it, it may find it hard to get into such fights with a few Sparrows flying towards him, especially the late Sparrow variants :).

Also I'd say Mirage F-1 would be a bit above Fishbed's level, either within or beyond visual range. Still it's an aircraft I'd like to fly and apparently it's among 3rd party projects list by Aviodev :).

 

Edit : F-104 may be interesting too but, I'm afraid it would cater more to it's fans and wouldn't fare too good against Bis. Well may be later variants and employing hit-run type attacks, but doesn't appear to me as interesting as the above would be.

 

Also : Chinese F-7, because why not? :D I would think the cousins would have met each other a few times over Pakistan-India borders right? :P

Oh the English Electric Lightning - in a class of it's own.

 

Still in use for stratospheric research I believe, and our beloved Dr Brian Cox looked decidedly green after his sortie to the stars and back in a recent TV series.

 

But I have to add something to the debate, and say that probably the best opposition to the MiG-21BIS would be the guy sitting inside it - at least, in my case!

 

I do hope Leatherneck Simulations have plenty of spare parts - my copy is gonna get a severe bending I think.

I forgot I voted for this, I think I voted for the F-4 as the most fitting opposition, but out of all the planes on that list the F-16A is the one i'd like to see most. I wanna fly a viper!
