You all make me feel bad!

I so grew up on f-19 stealth fighter... and janes games... granted I had to take a break for a while due to real life.. but I was around for falcon 3 and 4 and what came after..

But this game.... especially this module.. what in the holy @#$.

I think it took me today.. close to an HOUR to just get off the ground, and I'm not even joking, and to add insult to LAWZYOUSUCK I am using a warthog setup and rudder pedals lol..

Once in the air I can "somewhat" aim this monster.. but dogfighting? are you kidding? if I can do a 360 degree turn its a good day.. all she seems to want to do is start shuddering then go into crazy ass spins...

if this is even 5% of what real pilots had to deal with back then.. then just wow...

All that said..... I freaking love these DCS games and I will buy every single module that ever comes out, just because:)

p.s.. I can start and fly that ka-50 like a mofo(I can start and get it off the ground:))

ok, no expert here but you have to be pretty delicate with the Mustang and really pay attention to any buffeting and shaking because that's the warning sign that she's about to flip out on you - literally! I've put a bit of a curve on my pitch axis and find that helps prevent me from reaching the point where she's ready to stall out.

Would have been the other way around and you would be able to fly her just after one or two hours like you had never done anything else before - then it would be all of us who you would make feel really, really bad. :o)

So, it is okay how it is. We all went through it - in one or the other way. ;o)

You have nothing to feel bad about if you were able to get it off the ground. Over the years I have flown in many flight simulators ( over many platforms ) and have never failed to be able to fly.

When I bought the P-51D, ( with Rudder Assistance On ) I took off and flew around no real problem. I gained a bit of speed and tried to pull my first loop.

In trying to pull my first loop, I crashed about 6-8 times and it actually took me a couple of hours of constant attempts to finally get my first loop.

Straight away I was hooked. Flight Simulators ( prior to Lock On ) never really challenged me when it came to flying. Only the combat side was a challenge.

But to find such an in-depth simulator where you can feel a sense of achievement, just from basic flight......I was hooked instantly and don't ever see me shaking the addiction. :D

Yeah, good point guys..

I think its more of a shock to realizing just how much I actually DONT understand about even the basic concepts of flight...I'm so use to dogfighting being YANK that stick and cram it into next week without penalty, I had no idea you could stall out even doing that.. or that you had to be gentle in the turns.. or you couldn't just yank thrust and turn in any direction you wanted without your rudder slapping you about the face lol.

One thing... I have to say.. fu wingmen.. I am SO sick of them crashing into me as I'm taking off... did they ever think that perhaps I NEEDED the whole runway? to skid across over and over before I could get my useless butt into the air LOL.

I will say... rudder pedals.. yeah.. anybody who doesn't have them take it from somebody who is clearly casual trying to be more that they are as MUCH of a change as a hotas is to a keyboard..... its just something about that granulated control that you can use with your feet.. that are not being used for anything else that after a few hours REALLY just started to be natural to me...

EDIT: I should probably add I was in no way trying to insult this sim or DCS.. I'm just very impressed and perhaps humbled.

and there is the difference in the real world when you take into account the sense of g force - a mate of mind took me up in a Yak-52 and it was only after that I really appreciated flying under stress to be easy on the stick - in all honesty, it changed my approach to combat flight sim flying (I still can't hit anything :) though)

Haha nice. It just takes a little finesse. Give it some time, you'll get it down. I thought I was in good shape for a while, then I found that 'Rudder assist" was on by default. Turned it off and suddenly I couldn't get off the ground! Took me some time to find out what I needed to do..

Small movements go a long way in this plane. More so than in other Prop Sims I've jumped in. Definitely than (from what I could tell) in jets! Im usin a 'hog as well. Excellent stick :)

I have to say.. this community is amazing...

I was expecting to be flamed and my inbox filled with hate mail...

I love the fact that I cant fly these fine planes.. if I could.. that would be a horrible disrespect to the pilots who fought and died for us...

I will admit though.. I had no comprehension of how hard they actually had it!

Welcome DamoX, it's a real culture shock to climb into a plane with more realistic physics definitely.

I just want to say though, you're definitely not alone. I still haven't got to the point with the Fw190 where I can say I can handle it well. And that's after flying every day since it's release!

I can say without hesitation though, there is definitely no going back to the low fidelity models elsewhere. The challenge is what it's all about here.

I should warn you though, it'll end up with you wanting to build a cockpit. That's when you really need to seek help :) :) :)

I bought a new X-52 hotas and have not configured it yet, but switching from game

mode to sim mode gave me quite the shock. I can fly ok, have not done a loop, but

I am having problems with taking off and landing.

Good Luck to ya !!!

Please look up Rule 1.1 before using any profanity. BTW, WWII fighters are most definetly not yank-the-stick-and-win planes. Too much torque in those engines to handle it. Good luck, man.

If you want to talk to anyone about anything personal, send it to their PM box. Interpersonal drama and ad hominem rebuttal are things that do not belong on a thread viewed by the public.

One thing i have to point out... naming a thread.. "OK, so" is as useful as tits on a bull.

It hovers??? Your kidding right lol....

I was playing around with the MI-8 earlier today, I am now 100% convinced that nobody actually fly's these in real life and its just a giant conspiracy, what an uncontrollable monster!

Note that there is currently a bug preventing the autopilot channels from working in the Mi-8, which makes it a lot more difficult to fly.

You can find the fix here:

Heh..... that's assuming I know it has autopilot...

Yeah I kind of just jump into these things and figure it out as I go, I have yet to read any manual, probably the reason I spend most of my time in the p51 or the fw... my god have you seen the controls in the a10?

Eventually I'll pick one and "get into it" I'm just not sure what one to start with. I'm leaning towards the KA-50

So far tho, I have managed to start -ALL- the aircraft except the saber,a10, and fw without reading the manual, something I'm rather happy with:)

Don't feel bad. In IL2 I could land numerous aircraft with broken ailerons and broken engine repeatedly no problem. My first DCS aircraft was P-51D and it took me two weeks to land a perfectly functional plane and have it the same state by the time I came to a complete stop. I eventually found out I didn't flare enough pre-touchdown (you want to make it glide level a few feet above ground and let it descend down on it's own as it looses speed), and I was too harsh on the pedals post-touchdown (just tap them). I still can't land in crosswinds 75% of the time.

Have you tried the A-10C yet? That is a piece of cake to fly vs the P-51D. Auto slip correction, and you can land a lot harder than you can with a P-51D.

If you want to add a small couple of pieces of hardware to your control setup, you can significantly improve your control and (IMHO) fun with DCS prop planes by:

1- extending your Warthog. The Simpit extension is awesome and you can select between 8cm and 15cm. I went with the 8 and it's the biggest change in flying you can imagine since buying the Hog. I'm tempted to buy a 15 as well, but the 8 is just perfect. You'll find yourself stalling out the sky much, much less often with more stick throw.

2- Get a CH Quadrant on eBay. I snagged one for $70 right after I got the 'hog when I realized it needs more sliders. Put your pitch and roll trim, mix and pitch, manual rads, and range to target axis on the 6 sliders and mount next to your hog throttle.

You've already been bitten by that wonderful flight model. It's only a matter of time before your 'pit starts consuming your money...

Remove assistence its the first thing that i do...And its really great to crash 1,2,3,4 times before can do a terrible takeoff... i do recomend to read a manual of plane, its important before try to do a safe takeoff.

I´m a old sim pilot and a torque effect at dcs prop planes make the job really hard....do a little corrections with a rudder, smoth aceleration and stay with a stick back to lock the tail gear its a very important thing to do a "safe" takeoff......i´m not write perfect takeoff....but you should live to try to land...rs

Hint that helped me alot: Use the right CTRL + enter window to visualize your input and find the boundaries of what input your plane accepts. Then once you got the feeling for it, fly without. I find the buffeting information in DCS to be lackluster (I only notice them when I'm already pretty close to stalling) and without a FFB stick, it's hard to tell when you approach the boundary of a stall.

Solid Copy on that. I gave up on the P-51 after 4 or 5 hours and stuck to flying the A-10C (so easy). Then I sort of kind of learned to take off in the UH-1 (still not great at landings). When I got the F-86 I found it to be a good mix between the easy A-10 and the not so easy P-51 and after taking off, flying, and landing it a few times I decided to go back to the P-51.

After a few more hours I can finally take off in the P-51 every time and land the P-51 most of the time.

So yeah, we've all been there! Quality sims can't be easy or they wouldn't be a quality sim.

EDIT: And as Greco said, reading the manual helps. It doesn't seem like it but it does.
