NRG-Vampire Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 ... I don't even care if it comes without the carrier at start... unfortunately we dont know (yet) how the carrier implementation is going (coming), not only the 3d model making but the carrier scripting, in-sim behaviour too so i think it will be task/work of ED and not job of 3rd parties (maybe in 2016 with DCS:Hornet) that was almost 3 years ago: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3597545/1.html

It's on ED. Leatherneck, just focus on the Tomcat. We'll love you even if you don't make a carrier.
emg Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 As far as the carrier is concerned, 4th gen DCS level fighter is so badly needed that I don't even care if it comes without the carrier at start... I agree. Most F-14 air victories were achieved by land-based F-14A squadrons anyway. By far.
Eihort Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 We don't need no stinking carriers.... or AIM-54... JUST MORE HAWK MISSILES!
jared9191 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Let's not kid ourselves, we need a carrier. It is the Tomcat, she needs her proper home. I'm still willing to wait, and i'll happily fly a land based cat before getting the carrier.
Scoggs Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I agree. I don't need a carrier right away. It will allow me to have at least one landing that doesn't end in death while learning. FlyingHighAU Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Curious, when pilots start learning the tomcat, do they learn from carriers or do they start their tomcat training from an airport?
SilentGun Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 ^ air base first (that's what TOPGUN is. the navy's training program) I really wouldn't want to land on a carrier my first flight :) Link to my Imgur screenshots and motto http://imgur.com/a/Gt7dF One day in DCS... Vipers will fly along side Tomcats... Bugs with Superbugs, Tiffy's with Tornado's, Fulcrums with Flankers and Mirage with Rafales... :)The Future of DCS is a bright one:)
EngineerFalcon Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Curious, when pilots start learning the tomcat, do they learn from carriers or do they start their tomcat training from an airport? Can't find my article on the U.S. Navy, but I still have one about the French Aéronavale - and they are actually linked concerning carrier ops. After six months of basic prop aircraft handling in France, pilots have thirteen months of naval training in the US with both props and their first jet (T-45C). "Carrier" landings are first done on an airstrip, painted like a deck and with approach mirrors. Then you finally have your qualification on an actual carrier. Afterwards, you "transform" - familiarise with your aircraft - on the ground before taking it out at sea. Edit : Damn... three minutes late.
FlyingHighAU Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Cool, well in that case, I think we can do without the carrier for a while, while we train ourselves on the F-14. Then by the time we are comfortable with it, the carrier ops might be ready! :)

PFunk1606688187 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I think I remember reading something about French aircraft manufacturers having to use American facilities to test their carrier borne prototypes. Apparently its a thing, but its also a rare thing. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
Woogey Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 ^ air base first (that's what TOPGUN is. the navy's training program) I really wouldn't want to land on a carrier my first flight :) TopGun is not what you say it is. Topgun, is an advanced weapons employment school. You will have been trained fully to fly the Tomcat (Now Hornet) and probably have even been on a cruise or two before you ever go to Topgun. Topgun is like a post Graduate school, that not everybody gets to attend. BIO Baranek is releasing a book soon, that you should probably read. -Woog 1

By my calculations it should lie inside the NTTR Map...... just barely. (Far NW corner) I highly doubt it is modeled, otherwise Wags would have previewed it by now. Edited February 25, 2015 by Woogey

Vampyre Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (that's what TOPGUN is. the navy's training program) No, Topgun does not really exist as it was represented in the movie anymore. It is now the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center which teaches more than just Dogfighting and BVR tactics but has expanded to include strike warfare as well. The first time new Navy pilots go to the boat they are flying the T-45 Goshawk. Before they ever get anywhere near the boat they are doing ground school and Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP). As far as a specific platform like the F-14 or F/A-18 is concerned, when the Student Naval Aviators graduate and are designated as Naval Aviators they would be assigned to a Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) such as VF-101 or VF-124 for the Tomcat or VFA-25, VFA-106, VFA-122, VMFAT-101, or VAQ-129 for the F/A-18A-F or EA-18G. It is at the FRS that the new Naval Aviators will learn the aircraft inside and out and will perform FCLP's and first take the aircraft they will one day be operating in a fleet squadron to the boat. Most Naval Air Stations and their Outlying Fields (OLF) have the capability to perform FCLP's. As far as the NTTR, If it can be expanded upon, I hope to one day have NAS Fallon and associated range complex as well. Oh and Reno Stead Field for some awesome air racing action... I hope I can make it back there this year for the air races.:pilotfly: 1 Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! "If at first you don't succeed, Carrier Landings are not for you!"

Woogey Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Vampyre Knows his stuff. I can't help but think that Fallon would be a great airbase addon for Leatherneck to bring to the NTTR map. I've mentioned this elswhere, but it would complement both the F-14, and the F/A-18C when released. Also would make a good test bed for Leatherneck's scenery development team. Vampyre, Reno Stead is a great idea! Mustang's, Spitfires, Bearcat's and dare I say an LNS Hellcat? -Woog

Besides, the Flogger would make an interesting adversary for the Tomcat (Sweep wing, first Russian BVR and Look-down radar) and Leatherneck may have planned it at some point, saying that it shared most of the 21's systems.
