Never parachute into an area you've just bombed

You never have too much fuel, unless you burn.

FaceTrackNoIR with a modded PS3 Eye (which was admittedly a bit fiddly) and DelanClip works well for me. I've never used TrackIR though so can't compare

Bring on the Rift or equivalent, though!

Wow. I wish I knew about EdTracker last night! I spent 20 bucks on a cheap webcam on the classifieds, and set it up with FaceTrackNoir today. Works okay on the A10. Can't get it working with the Bf109 yet.

Definitely going to get an EdTracker kit or components soon :)

Also tried trackir 5 and i couldn't see any difference worth all the money trackir asks...

Mano, you think Freetrack works better than Opentrack? I'm busy making a headtracker and am looking forvthe best software to use...

Mano: The VX-800 is what I picked up last night. What are you using to power the LEDs? An arduino? And what did you cut the mount from? :)

Sorry GurbY, I never used Opentrack.

However Freetrack works very well and is very easy to setup. The wrong thing is that it runs with x86 compatibility (anyway I have Win7 and it works well...dunno for Win8).

Alternative I know is FaceTrackNoIr that is 64bit compatible, a little bit harder to install, but very configurable and precise.

Here is a little video I made with my config.

Arduino? nah...it's very simple indeed...Leds only need power...they're connected in series with a 22Ohm resistor on the + side. The circuit is powered by a 5V 1A usb connector that is attached to the home 220V output with a cellphone adapter. Here it is the system.

the structure is made out of hand-cut 4mm plywood.

ps: the VX800 should be removed the IR filter. It is very simple but the cam is very sensible and could be damaged beyond repair. If you need help just tell me. I made a little guide explaining how to mod it...but it's in italian... :smilewink:

Cool :) I have an iPod touch wall adaptor that should power the USB nicely. I don't have the resistor though. No LEDs except for some cylindrical ones I got as lights for my camper. I wonder what I can tear apart around here :)

leds are simple IR Led 1.5V you can easily find on ebay with the resistors you want (for 5V supply and 3 in series LEDs it's 22ohm). Then I grinded the head away to get them plain. The surface must not be crystal clear but quite opaque (but without scratches).

Hey Mano, nice looking clip you've made there. You wouldn't have a template for that clip handy that you could share would you? That would make it a lot easier for me to make one, as I suck at drawing even with CAD programs.

I made a prototype clip out of cardboard a while ago but that soon broke and I've been trying to use a gyro/compass/magnetometer since but it's very unreliable and FTNoIR suddenly stops producing any output, even though it's still tracking the input. I guess it's more the headracker driver used in FTNoIR more than the hardware that's the problem but I can't fix that myself.

All three are fairly easy to use and imho their performance in-game is very similar. I have freetrack and opentrack installed with similar curve settings, and I don't notice much difference.

Freetrack hasn't been updated since 2008, but still works well for many users. It sometimes crashes on startup for me so I don't use it often.

FacetrackNoir was last updated a year ago, but the team is still working on it.

Opentrack gets updated very frequently by Stan Halik and is very easy to install and try.

I'm now using OpenTrack mainly because of the Accela Mk4 filter. It's a significant improvement over FaceTrackNoIR (I used before) (and the very old FreeTrack). It's more responsive with my hardware setup (homemade IR emitter and dedicated modified PSEye cam), and you can modify the filter parameters to your liking.

I'd definitely go for OpenTrack. The upcoming v2.3 also has an improved UI.

TrackIR 5 with Track Clip Pro.

+1 this :)

I started out trying to get FaceTrackNoIR to work, but after a while I decided I'd rather spend some money and save time and above all nerves.

I'm very new to DCS world and I like eliminating things I have to fight with; I have to fight with myself enough already. TrackIR5 worked almost perfectly right out of the box. Adjustments I've had to make have been minimal. That's the kind of solution I like.

For everybody building their own IR-tracking system, more power to you and I hope you get a system together which can challenge TrackIR on their own turf, not because I'm mad at TrackIR, but a bit of competition is always a good thing.

I don't know exactly if I have the right (old) PS3 Eye toy, or the bad (new) version. However, what I read is that removing the IR filter is not perse necessary; with a visual light filter like exposed film it would pick up the IR leds. Does someone has some experience with this? I hope this week my clip is printed so I can start assembling...
