Solty
In this post I will focus on American ground units. I will be throwing most common for Normandy 1944 scenario, which should be able to build a very believable ground force. USA 1. Armoured. I think the priority is to have M4 Sherman, one of the most iconic tanks of WW2, present during Normandy and any other major operation since 1942 Data: http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/m4sherman.html#M4A2 Gun penetration data. http://amizaur.prv.pl/www.wargamer.org/GvA/weapons/usa_guns5.html Different Sherman types are included in the link. Most common during Normandy operations were short barrel M4, M4A1 and M4A2 Variants, but there were also, M4A1 and A2 versions with a new turret that contained M1 76mm gun. M10 GMC Primary US tank destroyer for 1942-45 Data http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/3ingmcm10.html M5 Stuart light tank. One of the most wide spread allied light tanks of the war. Data: http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/m5stuart.html Weapon Data. http://amizaur.prv.pl/www.wargamer.org/GvA/weapons/usa_guns2.html M8 Greyhound It uses the same Weapon as M5 Stuart. Additional .50cal machinegun was possible to be mounted on the turret. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M8_Greyhound Armoured cars M3 Halftrack https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Half-track Hornorable mentions (post france) M18 Hellcat M36 Jackson M26 Pershing. Grim_Smiles
This is a really great sign. Not necessarily that the map terrain is being worked on, but at least it appears they are prepping to start making models for the map. Does Chizh have a specific cut off point for 1944? Because what point in 1944 could determine what units. For example IIRC the King Tigers were starting to be fielded in September of 1944 and beyond, but anything prior and you're looking at Tiger I. Strut
Here is a great reference site : http://ww2db.com/index.php I also used to play a great Turn based War Game back in the day that seemed to have a great data base of just about most of the "hardware" that was used in WW2 . You can still DL the game here: http://www.excgame.com/combat-mission-beyond-overlord-free-download/ What i am inferring here is that you could use this as a start point for data base reference for Tanks, AFV, etc etc . Basically anything from June, July, or August 1944. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=135412 I would assume these dates to be correct seeing as VEAO and Eagle Dynamics are working on the 262 and the Meteor both either in service or just beginning to at that period. Solty
The King Tiger was first fielded in July 1944. You need numbers to become viable. Tiger II was alredy available during Normandy fighting, but in very small numbers. I don't think it would be a good world builder for that time (although give us all the tanks) The problem with German army is that variety of tanks, SPGs and other equipment is so big that it can't be all pointed out. Also, @TooTall Tiger or Tiger II were never standard tanks of German armed foces. They were rare heavy tanks. That ussualy were used in concentration of Heavy tank batalions. Moreover Tiger I in E version was still produced during production of Tiger II Why is everyone so obsessed with Tiger and Panther? PzIV and StuG are the real threat to the allies most of the time. Edited June 24, 2015 by Solty [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]In 21st century there is only war and ponies. Grim_Smiles
The King Tiger was first fielded in July 1944. You are correct, my mistake. It was just an example of why we needed to know a more exact date range target. The whole of 1944 to 1945 is a pretty big window. Granted I happen to really like the Tigers, especially Tiger I. Blame the book "Tiger Tracks" for that :smilewink: The problem with German army is that variety of tanks, SPGs and other equipment is so big that it can't be all pointed out. Definitely, I think ED would just limit themselves to the more common and well known items in the short term. We seem to have talented modders and artists in DCS, I'm sure some will add to the variety themselves. Flying-Kane
Why is everyone so obsessed with Tiger and Panther? PzIV and StuG are the real threat to the allies most of the time. Why obsessed? In the Normandy timeframe, numbers of Panzer IV and Panthers were almost equal. Panzer IV: 758 Panther: 655 StuG: 158 So, it was more common to meet a Panther, than a StuG. shagrat
From a flight Sim perspective I'd rather focus on the dominant Anti-Air threats. I'm not a specialist, but from what I know the majority of low altitude Anti-Air was common gunfire and MGs. Second medium altitude small caliber FLAK and mobile FLAK systems and high altitude large caliber FLAK / Anti Aircraft guns. Most of the ground troops were most likely infantry, on trucks or SdKfz semis or similar. Fortified positions, support artillery, anti tank guns etc. The tanks especially the more recent Tiger and Panther should usually be limited to front line attacks and strategic positions, rare in massive numbers and likely used as tip of the spear of counter attacks. Fortified positions of various size and armament, road blocks against tracked vehicles, camouflaged artillery positions (hidden to the casual allied fighter), these are the most necessary objects and vehicles for a WW II Normandy map... Of course a variety of tanks (StuG, PzKW IV, Panther and Tiger I/II) is a good addition. What do you think? Are there any numbers on Infantry vehicles, trucks, support etc.?
