Related but unrelated: where were the Top Gun training scenes filmed? Was that around the NTTR? I forget. Once the Leatherneck F-14 is out we might have to try a scene-for-scene remake of some of that movie...

Top Gun was filmed at Naval Strike Warfare Center, Naval Air Station Fallon, on the opposite corner of the state. The Top Gun program moved to Fallon as well back in 1996.

While I'd love to see a map of the Fallon range, it doesn't provide the aesthetics that the Nellis map does. Fallon is located in a very po-dunk area. Aside from the air base, you're looking at a lot of desert.

Fallon is about 50 miles east of Reno, which could provide some additional interesting city terrain and a route for people interested in civil aviation. (future airliner module anyone?) They might not have Hoover Dam or the Grand Canyon, but looking at Google maps I don't see a shortage of interesting things up there.

I have to announce my profound disappointment at there being no RSBN, PRMG or ARC in NTTR. I can't even find my own bum without RSBN. I can see myself landing at Groom Lake thinking I'm in Nellis and wondering why everyone is looking at me weird. :music_whistling::lol:

Map and compass is hard for us who are navigationally challenged.

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn.

I am afraid I have some bad news for everyone regarding the NTTR.

Upon it's release, I will be the first to fly there and I WILL conquer the entire region (including NAS Fallon if I can find it) and impose a NO FLY zone over the entire country of Nevada in my highly modified Cessna 172. Those of you in Pipers and Mooneys and, well, okay -- Bombardiers -- are, of course, exempt.

That being said, I saw civilian craft at McCarran. Will there be civilian AI to give traffic issues for us navigationally challenged?

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

To keep Mc Carron up to date will we have the chargrilled BA 777 as a navaid?.

Joking aside really looking forward to this, and have been for years, like many, but know I'll get lost. But as a(Legal) Alien (according to U.S. law) Does that mean I have previous permission to land in Area 51?

I tell you, Top Gun staff and students went from having an awesome city like San Diego to kick back in when off-duty to all going to the same O-Club or the local sports bar in Fallon for entertainment.

What a downgrade. :drink:

If you're really interested in that sort of thing, maybe, but don't let the maps fool you. Reno isn't exactly the most "happenin'" place in the country.

If I were the developers, I'd be spending my time and energy creating a map of MCAS Miramar.

NAS Fallon is on the opposite corner of the state. Its not part of the NTTR map.

The location of NAS Fallon is actually within the boundaries of the map, but it will be in a low detail area and almost certainly completely unmodeled. It might be interesting to scout out the area in DCS, but I doubt there will be anywhere to land.
