First off, I'm sorry, I really am. I've owned this helicopter ever since it first came out, however it's taken me this long, to finally take a break from the Huey and decide to give it a good going over and have a good session learning it.

To be honest, I think I was put off by all the switches, wow what can I say, what a Helo. Took her for a lovely long flight across the mountains, to the coast, and then off Oil rig hunting. Practised my radio nav procedures and routed along all the ndbs, and finished off with some sling load training.

The feeling of weight and size this helicopter projects is second to none, she may only be a virtual model on the computer, but you really do feel like you're flying something a lot bigger than the Huey, and the attention to detail is something else, it appears you guys have modelled everything. :)

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I honestly can see her taking over from the Huey as my favourite Helicopter Module, and this is from someone who just spent £600 on a Huey collective to get the perfect controls for that helicopter. :)

I know I'm late to the party, and I'm not saying anything that you guys don't already now, but I just had to come on and say THANKYOU, A huge WELLDONE to everyone who was involved in this project.

This module, when combined with Simshacker and the MI8 Helios profile, really does provide the ultimate experience. :)

Next flight is night flying, then starting to learn her teeth.

It is a strange chopper the MI-8.

Initially I thought I would not like it as it was so big and slow to react, but I was instantly smitten after the first flight.

I do not know why I like it so much, perhaps the tractor like build?

But as you said, belsimtek are doing a great job with this module.

HP G2 Reverb (Needs upgrading), Windows 10 VR settings: IPD is 64.5mm, High image quality, G2 reset to 60Hz refresh rate. set to OpenXR, but Open XR tool kit disabled.

DCS: Pixel Density 1.0, Forced IPD at 55 (perceived world size), DLSS setting is quality at 1.0. VR Driver system: I9-9900KS 5Ghz CPU. XI Hero motherboard and RTX 3090 graphics card, 64 gigs Ram, No OC... Everything needs upgrading in this system!.

Vaicom user and what a superb freebie it is! Virpil Mongoose T50M3 base & Mongoose CM2 Grip (not set for dead stick), Virpil TCS collective with counterbalance kit (woof woof). Virpil Apache Grip (OMG). MFG pedals with damper upgrade. Total controls Apache MPDs set to virtual Reality height. Simshaker Jet Pro vibration seat.. Uses data from DCS not sound... goodbye VRS.

I'm a latecomer too, but so glad that I finally took the time to learn her properly. Piloting a city bus-sized chopper is literally TONS OF FUN

And she's a powerful beastess too. You can really feel that humongous five blade rotor and those Klimovs putting out thousands of HP when you pull some collective. MASSIVE POWA!

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

LOL, I am the same with the SU-25 and the F15. I have never really flown either of them even though I have had them for two years now. Could not say why, I just never got around to it.

The Mi-8 is a great module. As people have already said, lots of power and in some ways it is more responsive than the Huey. I really enjoy it.

Welcome! Feel free to ask around for help! We're not the most active, but we all love to fly the Mi-8.

Interesting...I only bought it to support Belsimtek folks. I *love* the Huey and have the Komodo collective/cyclic on order. But now you guys have piqued my interested.

Nah I'm still a huey fan. I like the Mi-8 but she's too bulky and unmaneuverable to use on the modern battlefield, even with air superiority. It would be nice if we had MP missions which actually utilised the Mi-8 for what its good at ie. cargo/troop transport. Unfortunately a lot of my time with DCS is spent using it like FSX ie. flying around looking at scenery and doing low level runs for the thrill of it.

Realistic troop capacity and decent infantry would make the Mi-8 the clear winner. Being able to drop spec ops, ATGM, manpad teams with decent AI would be amazing.

Well, had my first emergency / pilot cockup ;) today. Took off from Nellis, on route up towards Rachel, so I increase my collective to take me over the hills, and suddenly I notice I'm losing tail rotor effectivenss, next thing, ekran is yelling in my ear that both no 1 & 2 generators have failed, autopilot and stability system switches off and suddenly make the craft a hand full.

Quickly look for somewhere to land, before making a quick decent and landing in the desert.

Damn I appreciate it was likely all my doing, I'm guessing I pulled in to much collective, and let the Rotor RPM decay to a point where it could no longer keep the generators running, BUT wow, what a stunning feeling to be suddenly faced with an emergency in such a big helo.

It really got that adrenaline pumping. Note to self, next time keep an eye on the gauges. :D

Did you re-watch the track file and figure out what happened? I had something similar happen once and noticed in the replay that I forgot to turn off the APU!

I assumed that was the problem as I didn't notice anything else wrong but I don't know what the expected effects are if you leave the APU running.

Cowboy10uk, I can totally relate. I had the Huey for almost two years before I really tried her out and god was I hooked! I then bought the Mi-8, as my love for helos just got rekindled, and I have hardly ever flown her. Look at how I park in a Vegas parking lot!

But after reading this thread I've promised myself to really try her out before the year's end. Thanks for motivating me!! (I just have to stop buying so many modules as I never have time to fly them all...)

The APU has nothing to do with generators, so judging from Your description it was most likely collective mis-handling issue indeed. Generators switching off are a dead giveaway. In Hip You really have to be careful about rotor RPM when operating at high altitudes.

I agree that over-torquing the rotors would seem to be the most obvious issue when the generator failure warnings sound. The question is what caused the decrease in RPM?

Mishandling the collective is definitely one possibility.

I wondered about the APU because (and I acknowledge that this is just a guess) I thought leaving it running could interfere with normal rotor operation which in turn would affect the RPM and thus the ability of the generators to function properly.

While I understand turbine and piston engines are very different, imagine driving your car with the starter motor constantly engaged.

Anyway, even if the APU had nothing to do with this (or my) particular problem. I'd love to learn what the effects of leaving the APU on during flight would be.

Anybody from Belsimtek care to chime in? Inquiring minds and all that... :book:

Leaving the APU on only affects your fuel burn rate. That is, it's loud and it burns fuel. Other than that, it does absolutely nothing.

Good to know. Thanks!
