A long wait, a long time downloading but was it worth it ???

I'm decidedly underwhelmed with the map to be honest. I'm not knocking the work they've done on the terrain it does look great.

What troubles me is that there are very few airbases and they are all in one place with at most 130km between them. While this may be accurate it doesn't seem to offer much scope for Missions. Particularly MP missions other than coop. Strikes me it would be better if there were some other (even fictitious) bases out around the flat areas in the north of the map.

I disagree. I mean, I see your point, but the beauty of DCS is accuracy and I would not want fictitious bases all over the place. I've studied maps of the area and I knew what I was buying because it is real. So I could pass on this and buy maps further down the road, or stick with Georgia, if I didn't like the map.

Have you updated to the latest downloader? DCS didn't find it automatically for me so I ran it from the command line:

In the /bin/ folder LShift + Right mouse click. Chose "Open command prompt here" (or something along those lines - I am on Swedish OS). Type: DCS_updater update and then hit Enter.

I had some modules taking forever with the first updater but with the new one it was blazing fast. Perhaps that will be the case for NTTR as well.

Okay, I broke down and tried this ^ and it's still creeping along at the same rate. Oh well.

OK lets talk about accuracy. I'm looking at google earth and topo maps of the area and it looks like several airbases/airfields which should be present aren't.

So adding some extra's would have been a good idea.

When I was flying my Huey around Las Vegas last night all I kept saying to myself was 'man this is sooo much better than FSX....I have traffic running and I'm not flying a slideshow!'. The NTTR looks beautiful, I agree. The launch I have to say was a farce and I'm hoping ED learn from this - BIG thank you to the guys who went out of their way to provide torrents.

Now to remap everything in DCS!

It was stated several times and in several places in the forums which airfields would be included with the Nevada Terrain and that not all regional airfields would be included at launch due to development cost/time constraints. They chose the most popular / interesting airfields of the area to include and model at this level of detail. The entire terrain is Alpha, and more airfields may be added in the future, but the map is nothing more than a testbed for testing new technology relating to the 2.0 graphics engine and the fulfillment of a preorder bonus that was promised several years ago to A-10C beta purchasers.

NTTR is specifically for Red Flag training missions. In those scenarios all aircraft take off from Nellis, fly in separate directions and hold until the scenario begins, and then fly virtual sorties. That is what you are meant to do in Nevada as well.

Sorry you're disappointed with the map, but it's exactly as promised.

Honestly how long would it have taken to lay down the airfields and aprons. They wouldn't even have to populate them, that could be done by the mission creator. I just think after all this time and all the hype that it could have been better. I think it has very little scope for any sort of Side vs side multiplay. So really we are still stuck with the Caucuses for any of those type of missions, at least until Straits of Hormuz comes out. Lets hope its not 5 years of hype and build up till we get that.

I found downloading all my modules very quick, I think the reason is that the installer used the 1.5 install, copies the files and only downloads the new files. It took me less than 10 minutes to download and install 9 modules. Very quick once you are up and running.

I agree.

I was to GITMO in 1977 and, then, knew the Navy base's layout pretty good. When I bring up anything like Google Earth to explore the base it does not show much detail. Imagine the military would like to keep their secrets relatively secret.

Maybe exclusions have something to do with military restrictions.

I love how everyone's ignoring the one guy who's whining :D

My buddy and I did a short flight together today. I swear our 'cruise' missions are now going to be solely scenic flights for the next week or so!

Who's whining. I made what I think is a very valid criticism. I did say in my original post that it looks nice. I simply can see a very limited mission scope.

Coming out with accusations of whining seems like blatant fanboi tactics. Next it will be accusations of trolling. Just because I'm not running with the herd, falling over myself with fawning.

Seriously did no one at ED or in the beta test point out that some alternative airfields could be good for mission building?.

hahaha...well I didn't see it as whinning but I just didn't see his/her point as something worth mentioning as it was a personal opinion but one I didn't share. Having said that, I think it may well be a good idea to have a fictional airbase in the middle of some of that open desert as an option.

I think everyone can agree with that. Really hoping that ED can model Tonopah (sp?) as they once said they would like to.

The Cities and overall feeling of speed and flight are amazingly done, but i have to agree that in the end of the day it's still flying in your backyard without the real thrill of flying over enemy terrain.

And if i may rant a little, there are quite a lot of really empty desert area's on this map, which to me, are not very interesting, and i have difficulty creating scenario's for. (I know this is the real terrain, but that alone doesn't make it interesting)

The scope of the map is for Training and Red Flag. Wags has said that maybe down the road they could add more airfields but its undetermined at this point. The map wasnt designed for side vs side missions besides Red Flag type scenarios. Its simple.

SOH will be following close behind, it will be more what you think this map should be.

Have you tried landing at any of the unprepared airfields yet? There is that ;)

Anyways, everyone needs to lighten up the attitudes, on both sides.

Yup, well worth the painful DL speeds. Looks fantastic, smooth as silk in downtown and everywhere else with settings maxed out. That is what it looks like from the air on my numerous trips to Nevada and Cali.

The only thing I hadn't noticed yet is Valley of Fire, just east of downtown Vegas. Could be that I missed it with all the hoopla of Vegas and the Hoover dam. That area is bright red (hence the name) and very noticeable from the air irl. I may have missed it, looks like it should be there based on the map.

Remember guys, this is a training map, based on the Red Flag exercises - not all out war theater.

BTW: the one thing I can't figure out is how to make Russia a Blue force in the Mission Editor so I can fly without the F-15s shooting me down.

Anyhow, thanks ED. Expectations met.

Good day,

I like what ED has done. I waited for a day to get it downloaded, and did some free flight over Vegas. Theeeeennnn I got my SSD from UPS thought I had everything backed up, did a clean install tried to copy over games from old hard drive, I didn't get DCS copied so now I wait. I would like the option of being able to control the speed of the download/upload. The torrent will hit my upload hard and making using the internet near impossible when I have no upload. So a way to control and pause/resume the downloads would be nice.

Now that NTTR is finished and working good, I hope that ED will focus on some supersonic multirole planes, like F/A-18C.

NTTR is only an Alpha release right now, a little more work to be done there, and on 2.0. That said, its unlikely that too many resources have been pulled away from the Hornet, I am sure work continues on it even with all the NTTR madness going on.

1.5.1 and it's latest versions had already bought me, NTTR was the "coup de maitre", and I am totally sold to DCS World.

Above all, and being STILL IN ALPHA, I am amazed with the overall smoothness even on my 4 yo i5 2500 !!!

Road Trip!

Last night I took SR160 from Las Vegas to Pahrump in a HMMWV with a .50 mounted on top. I was surprised by how detailed this is even at ground level.

I have a brother that lives in Las Vegas. I might have to try to find his neighborhood...

Yes after all of the issues i've had during NTTR download, were worth it, it's unbelievable the detail and the overall quality of this map considering also its Alpha stage which can easily be considered a solid retail indeed
