56RAF_coventry Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) Which version should I download if I'm starting from a clean install? Been a while since I played DCS only have the original blackshark (not blackshark 2) and the A-10C. Looking to get back into playing. Also could anyone recommend me any threads that I can read about improving performance, not got the greatest of CPUs or graphics card so optimizing and playing around with the settings to get a decent frame rate will be important. My specs are below: ASUS Z87M-PLUS Intel® Core i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 1GB 16GB DDR3 RAM 2x8gb (probably don't need that much for what I use PC for) 1TB Hard-drive 450 Watt PSU (corsair make, don't know exact details) Windows 7 64bit Monitor resolution @ 1920x1200 Thanks. mwd2 Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) Use OpenBeta of 1.5 Edit: But BlackShark 1 will not work under DCS World! Zomba Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Although 1.2 is the official stable release right now, 1.5beta is pretty much the same in capability, but with vastly improved performance with the EDGE rendering engine and is also stable. If you were running BS1 with your setup, then 1.5 will perform and look much, much better on it. You will have to upgrade your BS1 to BS2 for it to work. 2.0 heralds in the rollout of the NTTR map, but right now it's a bit limited from early release bugs and no Georgian map yet. The dust is still settling with 2.0 and there will most likely be rapid changes over the short term that might be frustrating to deal with if testing and bug reporting isn't your focus. Ultimately 2.0 will be the best of all versions (It's showing awesome promise so far), but it's only just been released and there's still plenty of work to be done. If just getting back into the driver's seat and expecting it to just work is your goal then I'd go for 1.5. The thing is that you can also download 2.0 and install it fine, it won't interfere with 1.5 and the installer will grab about 17GB of data from it when installing 2.0 saving you on having to download it. They run side by side just fine. I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.
56RAF_coventry Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 (edited) Thanks for the quick replies. Having had a quick look on the forum about upgrading to blackshark 2 it seems the best way to do that would buy blackshark 2 since they don't sell the upgrade now. But will probably wait for a sale to arrive first before buying. Edited December 10, 2015 by 56RAF_coventry

Azrayen Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Which version should I download if I'm starting from a clean install? Use OpenBeta of 1.5 Well, as the name says it, it's a Beta version (intended for testing). I agree it works better (performances) than the 1.2. But in the end, the release (currently in 1.2) will be updated ; to 1.5 then to 2.0 (or to 2.0 directly, we don't know for sure yet). So basically my advice is to get the "true" DCS (i.e. the release one, that's the 1.2 for now), then optionnally to get beta or alpha (in complement) if you want to test the latest features, and aren't bothered by serious bugs you may encounter in those un-stabilised versions. ++ Az' PS : Agreed there is no pb with giving serial. Original owner should stop using them, that's all.

hawa0835 Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 Is 1.2 and 1.5 able to run as separate games? I wonder, if I already have 1.2 and want to test 1.5. Do I had to uninstall 1.2? Or can I install 1.5 and run 1.2 and 1.5 as separate games?

Valinor Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 A long time ago. In fact i used the open beta version as my "release" version. Once 1.5 was released that's what i used.

Kobradelta1000 Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Switched to 1.5.x app. 4 weeks before, since i know that Dcs 2.0 will be a new install at all, i scrached 1.2.x 1.5.x has its own bugs, i know, but what version had no bugs before? 1.5.x feels definitely smoother and more grown up- i love it and don´t regret it. Yurgon Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 With 43 GB free space on my system+DCS drive and 28 GB in the 1.2 installation, that would be the first thing to go if I really needed the space (already deleted and uninstalled a lot of old stuff to make room for 2.0). Then again, I've got a 500 GB SSD lying around in order to test Win 10 + DCS, I just haven't found the time to install it yet. :protest:
dburne Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I have all three versions still on my gaming SSD, not tight for space just yet so figured I would leave them all just in case. King_Hrothgar Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 I've left it on my 250GB SSD for the moment, but if I bother with the 2.0 alpha then I'm sure it will go.

emg Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Took part in a 20+ player MP event in 1.5, shortly after it went open beta. DCS didn't crash for anyone and the FPS & visibility gains were huge. Uninstalled 1.2 a week after.

Waiting for the real release version of 1.5 The release version of 1.5 is called DCS 2. ;) DCS 1.5 was made available to test EDGE (Eagle Dynamics Graphics Engine) while Nevada still wasn't ready for release. Once the Black Sea map is 2.0 compatible I assume 2.0 will become the new Open Beta and 1.5 will cease to exist.
