Greekbull Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 Well after flying some with Jar this last week and listening to his amazement at the Oculus experience he has me sold :) Getting private oculus demo in 2hrs at Best Buy....wish they had some in stock but looks like I'll have to wait. _Acoustic_ Posted May 9, 2016 Posted May 9, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the quick report Jar, man I'm excited for mine. ... I'd rather do other hobbies now than fly in a monitor. This seems to be a common statement from a lot of people and is enlightening. Would be cool too see some more reviews of the cv1 and Dcs I'm interested too know more about how it feels too fly I'll do a review for the A-10C and P-51 since that is all I fly once I get my CV1, shipped this morning so I'm hoping for either an evening delivery tomorrow or Wednesday. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve, haven't had that feeling for a long time. :) Edited May 9, 2016 by ♠_Acoustic_♠
PitbullVicious Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 I got my Rift yesterday. This was the first time I was trying out any VR device, so it was quite an experience. Especially as the first try was flying a Huey straight into the ground due to badly configured controls :D I'm not trying to describe the experience, as I feel that nobody has been able to explain it to me, one just has to experience it. I seem to get decent performance in 2.0.2 with only rendering distance turned to ultra from extreme (or was it the other way around.. to the second highest setting from the highest anyways). That's on simple single player missions, just flying about or dog fighting. Then the harsh truth: While the experience is unparalleled, I feel that the fidelity is not yet good enough for adversarial multiplayer. The resolution is simply too low for meaningful spotting and visual recognition in high end simulators, such as DCS. Very fun and very immersive, but for "proper" aerial warfare simulation, I'd guess it'll take 5-10 years more. But it is definitely coming! Just quick first impressions from a noob. i9-9900K @ 5.1GHz | MSI Ventus 3X OC RTX3090 24GB | 64GB 3200MHz DDR4 | Asus ROG Strix Z390-E | Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 Sound Card | Virpil T50CM2 base w/ F/A-18C / A-10C / Virpil T50CM2 Grip | WinWing Super Taurus Throttle | MFG pedals | TekCreations Hornet UFC, Landing Panel, Right Console | WinWing Hornet Combat Ready Panel | Buddy Fox UFC | Foxx Mount | 3 x TM Cougar MFD | HP Reverb G2 | Wacom Intuos S (with VRK) | Honeycomb Alpha Yoke | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | CH Fighter Stick Pro & Throttle | MS Sidewinder 2 FFB | Track IR 5 | Oculus Rift CV1 善く戦う者は、まず勝つべからざるを為して、以て敵の勝つべきを待つ。
beers Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 One of the lucky few who acquired a Rift at Best Buy this last Saturday, been dividing VR time between DCS and Project Cars. Project Cars is utterly beautiful, amazing, wonderful. DCS is immersive, very pretty, but as PitbullVicious indicated, resolution is a problem for combat. In the BlackShark tanks at the outer range of vikhrs (what's that, 6 miles?) thru the shkval appear as dark smudges against lighter background. Is that a tree or a rock or a tank? F*** it, target it and blow it up. In the A-10c the B/W & flir views are both about the same detail as the shkval, better zooming power makes for better view, but searching for targets is still very hard. JTAC is enormously helpful. Targeting is not impossible, but it is more challenging than in 2D. Flight operations are excellent, really immersive. Landing the Shark has never been so easy and my touchdowns are smoother than ever before. FPS ranges from 90 over water to 20 looking at a city with smoke in the distance. I don't find 20 jarring or sickening, just disappointing. Seems to hover around 45 in most situations which looks excellent. Really having a hard time determining which settings will make it perform better/worse. I guess my takeaway is that from 2D I felt like i was observing, 3D I feel like i'm in it. Take for example, hovering in the Shark behind a hill, popping up to pick targets, AAA erupts from the other side of the hill and it was clear to me exactly where it was coming from, not a guess of "it's a mile or so away" but exactly where he was. edit- did not know there was a profanity filter!!! lol 2600K @ 4.2GHz, MSI P67A-GD55, 16GB G.Skill @2133 , GTX 970, Rift, SSD boot & DCS drive [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
capthaltli Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 Thanks JAR for the update! As a fellow ball flyer I am glad to hear you are liking the CV1 behind the boat. I look forward to any details you can provide as you get more time in the rift. As you know, when you are on the "other side" waiting for your shipment, it is great to hear how people are enjoying the experience, especially when they have similar interest (carrier aviation and Hornet pit building) The changes you made to your hornet pit (pretty awesome build by the way) make me believe it is definitely an awesome upgrade. Looking forward to my first pass behind the boat using the CV1! CAPT [sIGPIC] "GOONIE" [/sIGPIC] "GOONIE" CSG-1 VFA-25
PitbullVicious Posted May 11, 2016 Posted May 11, 2016 Flight operations are excellent, really immersive. This is one fascinating aspect of the VR. What I forgot to mention in my previous post was that I found dog fighting in the WWII planes much better with VR. Estimating your own and your adversary's energy state, their distance and speed made manoeuvering and taking lead much easier than in 2D. The Bf-109 felt much more manoeuverable against the P-51 just due to the increased spacial awareness. But as mentioned, the problem with keeping your eyes on the enemy is the biggest limitation. Works pretty well with AI as you can pretty much guess what it's doing most of the time, but as Han Solo put it "Going good against the living? That's something else." i9-9900K @ 5.1GHz | MSI Ventus 3X OC RTX3090 24GB | 64GB 3200MHz DDR4 | Asus ROG Strix Z390-E | Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 Sound Card | Virpil T50CM2 base w/ F/A-18C / A-10C / Virpil T50CM2 Grip | WinWing Super Taurus Throttle | MFG pedals | TekCreations Hornet UFC, Landing Panel, Right Console | WinWing Hornet Combat Ready Panel | Buddy Fox UFC | Foxx Mount | 3 x TM Cougar MFD | HP Reverb G2 | Wacom Intuos S (with VRK) | Honeycomb Alpha Yoke | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | CH Fighter Stick Pro & Throttle | MS Sidewinder 2 FFB | Track IR 5 | Oculus Rift CV1 善く戦う者は、まず勝つべからざるを為して、以て敵の勝つべきを待つ。
Frusheen Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 1.5Beta won't detect CV1 Guys my CV1 works fine with 1.5 and 2.0 but will not work with 1.5Beta! I wanted to try the Gazelle in the Caucasus Map. I have Unknown sources allowed in Oculus Home and detect Oculus Rift enabled in DCS. As I said works fine in 1.5 and 2.0 Anyone got any suggestions. I've already tried a repair. The detect Oculus rift flag is 'true' under options.lua I've tried with Oculus home open and Oculus home closed. I just get DCS on the monitor. Express0083 Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I just return from Best Buy Oculus Rift Demo. Unfortunately for me my current glasses is to big so I had to bring my older spec and I see pixels : ( Windows 10 64bit MSI Z170A MB EVGA 1080 FTW Intel i7 6700k 4.0 GHz (SKylake) 16GB RAM Warthog Hotas and Rudder Oculus Rift
metalnwood Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I am not sure that your new prescription will hide them then! If you have not used a rift before than it's quite possible you have heard the pixels are gone but also compared to the older models. I can imagine that someones expectation from reading forums could be quite high if you have not seen inside one before. How was it otherwise?
hansangb Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I sound like I'm making excuses, but I'm really not. The level of immersion is so good that SDEs just seem to disappear. If you concentrate on looking for them, I'm you will. But then again..maybe my eyes are just bad! :) hsb HW Spec in Spoiler --- i7-10700K Direct-To-Die/OC'ed to 5.1GHz, MSI Z490 MB, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz, EVGA 2080 Ti FTW3, NVMe+SSD, Win 10 x64 Pro, MFG, Warthog, TM MFDs, Komodo Huey set, Rverbe G1
metalnwood Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 I agree. In the DK2 the SDE was very evident but after using it for a while it seemed to just disappear and not be a problem. Even if the CV1 has some it sounds a lot better so I look forward to it. Hopefully, the racing and flying with constant movement will limit any instances of it as it appears to be more noticeable in some still scenes.

Rosco Waffleking Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Skate.. you have CV1 now? or still waiting... my question to CV1 owners, how do you feel about rift after using it more than a week of owning it, are you guys still stoked about VR? It is awesome. I can not explain what it feels like to actually feel like you are sitting in the cockpit of whatever airplane, chopper you are flying in. There is a real sense of immersion and I will never go back to a regular screen. There are trade offs for using one though. The screen is still a bit low on resolution so you do have issues reading some of the smaller text in the cockpit and harder time with menus or in game text. With that said I LOVE VR and will never go back. you want to feel like you are flying the real thing? There is no substitute! 1

will- Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 Do you feel like you high up when flying. When you peer out of the cockpit. yes. the only thing stopping VR is the resolution. DK2 was like looking through a screen door. Some people don't understand that analogy though... so in other words; its not the same as clarity as your 1080 monitor.
