Balkans theater would make a great addition to the DCS for multiple reasons, and I will name only few:

1. Theater size is almost the same as the Caucasus (no performance issues for the engine)

2. Balkans/Yugoslavia cover at least 2 real life engagements that most of the DCS players heard of. The theatre is quite fitting both for missions/campaigns in the early '90s and late '90s and for great story telling aspect in campaigns. The amount of possible fictional scenarios looking back on the '90s is quite appealing.

3. Developers could, from the start, work on double-deal: Making the geographical theater and then making 2 versions of objects populating it - '90s scenery, and WWII scenery. If you're not informed - Yugoslavia was one of the first countries to have airforce and was pretty closely allied to the west.

4. I'd give money for it. :D I'd even buy one for a friend if I have the money XD

As you can see on the attached picture, the size of the possible Balkans Theatre is right fitting to the size of Caucasus theatre - so I suppose that DCS engine can gobble it without problems.

Also, regarding the '90s, pay attention that there is the Nato Aviano Airbase located just left of the western rectangle.

Now, this is just an idea I am (again) throwing out. If you'd like to wink at Eagle Dynamics to possibly revise the suggestion - I advise making a lot of "yes" votes in the poll attached.

I agree and fully support. In addition, this theater would be interesting for WWII planes. Above the YU sky flew most planes that are now DCS modules.

That is not a matter of size only. Look how much more your suggestion is populated.

But yes interesting area.

This reminds me about us looting a scrapped MIG-21 at the Tuzla (Bosnia) airbase back in the mid nineties. The ejection seat made a great contribution to our camp interiors :)

Additional to the real life scenarios there is one "what if scenario" that I would build in the ME, is to have Viggens supporting Swedish UN troops. That is one thing that we on the ground would have appreciated very much. Not that unrealistic eihter, since we did just that during the Kongo crisis.

Voted yes, for sure! The Balkan theater is a very familiar one for me with Falcon Allied Force beeing my first modern flight sim and later BMS. It is indeed a great scenario for DCS for the stated reasons. I would prefer to have entire Italy in it to cover all the airbases that have been used by NATO there.

About performance: As others have already stated the Black Sea map is pretty flat and simple in it's northeastern part which adds to performance. That would not be the case with the much more demanding terrain and scenary of the Balkans.

DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!

And if there would be an F-117 module as well, I would get the CA module and play Zoltan Dani :music_whistling:

There are already AI F-117s for you to shoot down ;)

Voted yes. But really I would like a global low res mesh with some more terrain around a few important military airports..

Agree with this.

Then I wish ED would free the terrain tools for the public to add terrain.

Really emphatically agree with this.

Nearly _every_ new terrain would be nice ... it's more important to finally dramatically increase the map size, so there's enough space for realistic szenarios ... Fighters/bombers startet their missions from Italy and Germany in the Yugoslawian war ... Of course it's a long time just flying around, but this is part of a realistic simulation (incl. air refueling etc)

This would be a great theater; I was involved in Allied Force back in the day. There are so many things that could be done with scenarios, including operating in bad weather with a high hard deck, playing "what if" with the ROE and allowing aircraft to fly low, or even historical "what ifs" involving larger scale factional fighting.

Allied force is also the first time that the F-14Bs acted as FAC(A)/SCAR to Hornets and Warthogs (VF-41 as documented in Black Aces High); I shouldn't have to spell out the multiplayer potential this has! :joystick:

I was on the ground with a blue helmet some years before that (94/95), and then we occasionally had some american F-16’s in the air, supposedly to act as CAS. For that we had a Danish (Nato) FAC in the battalion.

Once when we tried to get support we realized that the UN administration wasn’t really up to the task of a prompt chain of command.

It was a long chain of approval that ultimately had to go all the way to New York, so you could imagine that if we ever got a “GO” a couple of hours later the situation had changed anyway and the F-16’s back at their base a long time ago. After that we made sure to have the Danish Leopards nearby and they came to some good use now and then

Okay people, thank you for the replies.

To address couple of things pointed out:

A: "Caucasus area is less populated in the north" - You are talking about terrain mesh. What makes impact on performance/engine (or other way around) is the number of objects and their polygons. Since ex-Yu countries are mostly hills/mountains, the villages and the cities there are built in a scattered fashion. Look at Nevada Map, Balkans Theater would be lot less populated in most areas than the Nevada.

B: Aviano Airbase: Aviano Airbase is dozen miles out of the square I drew on the map above, and the square is just for theater size comparison. I have had, and mentioned it, the Aviano Airbase in mind when making the OP. Not to mention that when making a theater, you can "resize" the overall theater to 95% of the real proportion. That gives you less loss in between actual areas/cities, but can help in taking a bit more of terrain into account on the far NWES sides.

C: later, I am at work. Please keep talking :)

Haha, you're equally fun here as you are at 373vfs teamspeak when we fly.

Have an icecream on me :D

It's actualy quite the opposite - ex Yu area has 10x population density than Nevada. Sure there are lots of hills and mountains, but you can count there's a village or a town on top of each hill. :D There are also couple of cities similar or larger than Las Vegas.

But yeah, I'd very much like to have the Balkans map, if for no other reason than because I'd be flying over my home. :D

Until we get client Bombers, Bomber missions for a Balkins map could easily be simulated with sorties flying onto the map from "off stage" then exiting the same way. (Remember a significant number of Allied Force bomber sorties originated in the United States.)

One aircraft that would be conspicuous by its absence and necessary is the F-16. CJs flying SAM suppression and CGs flying FAC(A) mission were regular customers.
