After few hours of "flying"... Its a huge deception ! It reminds me April 2011 and IL2 - Cliffs of Dover.

1. FPS very low... i tried all settings possible !

2. The looking is honesty horrible

3. The game crashed 2 times due to Mission editor.

I hope this will be corrected in the future but as it is this thing is unplayable.

Might try giving us you specs, I have no issues running the map and it looks great for me.

I am honestly not blown away by the map. Everything, but mostly the cockpits look horribly washed out and the cliffs and trenches might as well be Quake III engine and textures. I have to say that a 2011 BoB title has more detailed building textures/ 3D models. The forests are shaped like you would expect from a brush set to maximum size and swirled around a bit, resulting in a foreign body amidst the landscape. Overall performance is pretty stuttery for me, Normandy is a slideshow at times. Nevada is mostly OK. The B-17 damage model is also real dodgy and needs a major overhaul.

The water and the WWII assets pack is absolutely stunning though, also in low light PBR looks fantastic. Lets wait a few patches and see what they bring.

I think buddy, you're either looking for things to complain about, or really not the kind of person that should take part in open Alphas.

Actually - I think really not the kind of person that should take part in open Alphas.

Having been repeatedly told that the product is still in development, to then complain that you have somehow been deceived because the product you downloaded is not finished means either you just clicked download without reading what you were getting (which is your own fault), or you're just trolling.

2. The looking is honesty horrible

& yet the bulk of posters think it a great improvement... ?

Perhaps again, if you want to find things to complain about, you'll find them.

If you want to make a contribution to the process, perhaps you could post some specific comments, and perhaps screenshots ?

Or is being helpful not the point of the exercise ?

My first thoughts. I agree that the map is too bright, cockpits are all washed out. Plenty of flickering shadows and trees to be worked on. Way too much muzzle flash in the Dora, impossible to track a shot in currently because the flash blinds the shooter's sight. My FPS is between 20-40 usually which is about the same for 1.5 for me actually. Certainly still an Alpha but overall it looks awesome!

Damage modelling is still a WIP on most everything, that's been pretty much broadcast all over the forums.

As for the Quake III comment, not sure we used the same Quake III engine... list me the games that have maps the size of Normandy with the detail and object count. I would love to play that...

If i could actually load any aircraft in to the maps it might help. Have entered serial numbers when prompted for both Terrain and Asset Pack and restarted DCS and still just wont load anything from the menu.

One thing when checking in Modules alongside both of these it doesnt show the box that says Serial Number. I have tried re-entering it again but still doesnt show the box like all the other paid DLC.

Any ideas?

Go to module manager\installed\terrain Normandy and click on DRM box. Then you can activate.

Mine doesn't show the serial numbers either, but everything seems to be working just fine.

Yep tried that as well. Re-entered the serial number. Accepted it. Starts to load fast mission (maybe this doesnt work with Normandy?) and just goes back to main menu.

The good:

The map looks amazing, I don't understand the negative comments, it's simply beautiful.

So is the lighting. It's realistic, especially the blinding mid noon light. As a private pilot my ownself, I find it very similar to my own experiences. I don't think it should be changed.

The bad:

The stuttering is bad. It's not FPS stuttering, but just plain stuttering. It kills the entire experience, I haven't tried Nevada yet to see if it's there, but I'll check.

I mean, it's not just immersion that the stuttering ruins, but the entire gameplay both offline and online. I just did an online sortie and literally crashed on landing because it got so bad. How can you dogfight and land aircraft like that? It's just not a great experience at the moment.

Also, every skin on the P-51 is really messed up besides "Desert Rat". Haven't tried any other aircraft other than that to see if they are also affected.

Have you disabled Deferred Shading? That absolutely kills DCS in NTTR for me - totally unplayable. Looking out the side in VR and even gentle wing rocks in the F-15 are a slideshow - totally wierd. It busts a lot of lighting as well.

I also experienced a massive FPS drop. But after checking BOTH shadow options to flat- killing HDR, setting trees to 10K (And killing the grass, which I was not to fond of), I was able to boost it significantly. I went from getting 25-35 FPS at treetop level tp 50-65!

I agree that there is still some work to be done (obviously), but it is still a pretty damn good alpha.

Hope they do something about the sea state- having to raise it significantly to get whitecaps makes getting airborne in props quite the hazard:)

Stuttering FIX (Not related to low FPS, but frequent loads from the harddrive) for all users with 16GB or more memory!

Set your virtual memory to OFF on all drives. Try DCS 2.1 Normandy or Nevada. Enjoy stutterfree experience :)

There is one drawback. You will need to restart DCS every two or three missions. Otherwise the game will hang on a mission load due to a memory leak I suspect.

P.S Fully tested on quick flight mission with the Spitfire over Normandy. My specs are in my signature.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but I got a big performance boost using windowed mode and same res.

Nate

I will have to give that a try, currently in VR for me 2.1 is pretty bad...

Went from a fantastic and very smooth VR experience in NTTR 2.0.5 to a more or less unplayable Normandy 2.1.0. It's been out for early access for over a month. How come no one noticed this? This map needs to have a sign, "Not VR ready" at the store page...

I know it is an "early" Alpha, but it is very un-optimized, not to mention the overly long loading times even on a fast SSD disk. Yesterday, I spent the entire evening trying to download 2.1.0 and Normandy, first time in years I had to use the command prompt to install something! The installation somehow merged 1.5.6 content into the new 2.1.0 install, rendering all my modules useless, and I had to reinstall the sim from scratch. Then I spent a couple of more hours trying to tweak and find a good VR setting and managed to bring it up to 43 fps at altitude... I hope that upcoming patches will solve some of these issues, but this is a very ham-fisted release compared to other patches and updates.

i have the page file turned off from the start.

luckily i checked to see if it was still off.

Microsoft had sneakily put the tick back in "system managed"..

microsoft....

so if you had virtual memory off. you may want to check it is still off...

So this looks normal to you then?

Yes, it is a lot more realistic. There is no way that the sky should darken around the sun like it used to (or it does in picture number 2). The sun in the face shouldn't make you completely blind to everything else unless you are looking directly at it.

Sure some tweaks may be necessary but its already miles better than it used to be.

Don't forget pilot helmets have visors that should block out that brightness, at least mostly:

33be83876cc3471b3bfc939d55e380ad.jpg

I wouldn't want to be forced to wear sunglasses underneath my Rift...

Some more examples (they look ok on my monitor, but at least twice as bright in my Rift):

1. Looking into the sun:

lqFCEiU.jpg

2. Looking away from the sun:

dsTo2wF.jpg

So the least that should be done, is to tweak the brightness for VR-users. That shouldn't be too hard:

if {VR mode enabled}

then brightness=0.5

Something along those lines (obviously I'm not a programmer).
