Scale of Speedtrees in 2.5

Recommended Posts

This is first think what I noticed, when saw the new map.

I hope someone will make a mod for smaller trees. In the cities, trees reach 6-7 floor, which is quite unusual.

So I live in middle europe and all of the trees in front of my apartment house are much higher than my window in the 4th floor... I deliver some photos when daylight is back but 60-70ft are nothing special.

Yes, I noticed that too. You can see this in the video I posted as well.

I did some poking around last night and found this located in the "\DCS 2.5\Mods\terrains\Caucasus\Models\BlockTrees" folder. It's a file named "BlockTrees.ref. The tinkerer in me wonders what the effect might beof changing the DummySize entries highlighted in the image below to smaller values. I haven't found anything else related to tree size.

I just took a second look in DCS and real photos street views. Now trees doesn't looks to me so big. Anyway, I like the new trees, at 100% setting, FPS counter is fixed to 60 most of the time.

The trees are mature and deserve to be “big”.

Like em, love em want some more of em!

It seems there isnt anything in any sim that will ever be acceptable to all.

Im pretty happy with where 2.5 and the revamped Caucuses has brought us.

I would think things like the fake flat fill in buildings etc. would get more complaints than the beautiful perfectly sized trees swaying in the wind.

The chances the trees will be cut back size wize IMHO is nil.

So nice job ED, love the trees.:thumbup:

For those that are interested. I have reduced the default tree sizes by 30%. Perfecto! Speed is now accurate and the trees now look to scale. I thought that it would open up terrain in the heavily forested areas but that is not the case at all. The change there is very slight and really not noticeable at all.

There are two files that need to be modded. Do a CTRL+H and replace the "Original Entry" (left column) with the "New Value" (right column) from the chart below. I use Notepad++. Notepad should do. The "30% Diff" value was just for my calculation to get the "New Value" and is not needed.

NOTE: I included the raw text for those that want to try so they can copy and paste.

MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ORIGINALS FIRST! Not sure if this might affect multiplayer. so BACKUP FIRST!

In VR the trees look pretty good and without being an expert they look okay although you need to consider the species. For instance most trees in the Caucasus in 1.5 map and even in Normandy map tend to be about the same height with the odd one poking up higher than the others. Where as in the new Caucasus map there is a greater variety of heights which makes it more fun scooting through the tree tops in a helicopter wondering if the one you didn't see is going to slap you out of the sky for not paying attention. :D

As for the types here's a list of trees and shrubs in the region.

Interestingly the sycamore can grow over 30 mtrs in height! Also there appear to be many other species that are very tall.

Here are some forest photos

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

Currently rolling with a Asus Z390 Prime, 9600K, 32GB RAM, SSD, 2080Ti and Windows 10Pro, Rift CV1. bu0836x and Scratch Built Pedals, Collective and Cyclic.

No need to fly choppers to measure them, F11 free cam does the same job easier and faster :D. IF the cam reports elevations correct, I found the very tallest trees in Nalchik area varying from ~25 m in the city up to ~45 in forrest areas outside.

That's somewhat oversized for this geographical region, but doesn't bother me enough yet to mod them. Might try doing it later though.

I dont think the trees are so big or very tall at all.

For me they look natural.

They look perfect to me. I live in Hungary and the trees in the forests around my hometown are about this size. Of course, fruit trees in the gardens are smaller, but oak and beech are really this tall.

Altough some oaks can effectivitely reach >35m, you can easily suppose the Batumi center is, in reality, NOT massively crowded by tricentenarial-laaarge-trees like it's actually the case in DCS 2.5!! (A quick look to real picture of these citycenters in Streetview is enough to understand that this large-tree-infestation is irrealist ) Honestly, setting a -20/30% treescale to better represent reality shoudn't be the most demanding task for the devs...

(At first 2.5 flight, these trees immediatly made me remember of old CFS3 and his enormous pines everywhere!!)

In this area very popular tree is poplar. It's really tall tree around 40 to even 50 meters.

I totally agree - the actual problem is that such tall trees represent the vast majority of displayed trees ingame: Batumi is full of >600 giant trees, where in fact 20-30 would be more exact. Reducing the medium scale of 30% as proposed sounds right to me to better represent the actual vegetation!! (With a bit more variance, eventually...)

After all this time waiting for 2.5, we finally get it and it’s awesome. Some of you have nothing better to do so you Poll Vault over mouse turds in regards to tree size. Jesus Christ

that´s only your opinion, enjoy your default installation of 2.5 and not waste your time posting here. . .

That's not true. I expressed my thanks to the devs many times also liking youtube videos etc. and i don't know a better sim than DCS. But a forum is mainly here for wishlists, bugs, suggestions. Or do you think it's already perfect?

The speed factor could be because of bigger trees or maybe its something else. Point is, the feeling from speed is not correct and im not the only one who thinks so.

Reading a lot of forum posts about trees (their hight, the felt speed while flying abouve them, detailed analysis)....did I miss anything??? We did not only get free Caucasus update 2.5 but DCF (Digital Caucasus Forestry simulator) ???

It seems that 2.5 has not enough bugs and probs as we spent so much time of discussing this stuff instead of joining MP and have some fun... just my 2cts. I flew all days in Huey and Gazelle on 104th Longbow and NEVER had the feeling of "wrong speed" if you go 200km/h at 1o mtrs above ground and dive in and out the clearings to sneak in.

Ok, keep on with this dicussion it is fun :-))))))
