Britain & Norway dispatch fighter planes to monitor Russian bombers

Recommended Posts

This is nothing uncommon, on russian TV-channel "Vesti" often are informational TV-reports about the greatness of the russian airforce. My g/f transliterates the russian language commentary to me of those reports.

In one report they showed that Tu-95's departed from ??Kamchatka peninsula?? then nearly encircled Japan before heading back to base. During the same night a few Tu-95's deaprting from the same base briefly unchallenged penetrated US airspace south-west of Alaska.

The crews of those planes were later congratulated by base command :).

met vriendelijke groet,

Михель

Back during the 80's, this was if not a daily occurence, then at least a weekly one.

I was serving my mandatory year in the Norwegian air-force back in 2000 as an F16 Groundcrew for 331/334sqd at Bodø Main Air Station, and was on RS15-duty when the Kursk sank. Hectic times, where the two RS15-aircraft was launched six times in two days. Fun to experience, but not for such tragic reasons.

All in all it's pretty routine that this happens. And with the increased activity in the Russian airforce in the north, it'll continue to increase in frequency. But then again, it's good training for both groundcrew and pilots here in Norway, and for the crew of the Russian aircraft as well.

It's all sabre ratling - they're not happy about the anti ballistic missile systems going into ex-warsaw pact countries, so they've suspended their participation in the conventional weapons section of the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties, are threatening to pull out of the medium range ballistic missile treaty as well - and not extraditing the guy the British are after, & being a bit more 'in your face' with the airspace violations

Cheers.

That would be a very large map, to show Russian Bases as well as bases in The UK. Could Loc-on handle something that big? Still it would be cool to have Northern Europe as a map.

Show me how to create a map I can get all the GIS data we need. :smilewink:

It would be extremely cool to have the north sea/northern Norway-area to fly in in Lock On, that's for sure. Lots of low-level flying-terrain here :pilotfly:

How accurate is the GIS-data?

Aaaah, the good old days! :)The Cold War kept me in (well paid) work for a few years. Many a Bear detected by my radars on the Faroe Islands and the Shetlands.

You old fart. :P

With the recent news of Russia announcing their newest submarine and admission of testing nuclear delivery systems this year, Im afraid we're headed to another cold war.

Russia will never be able to compete with NATO anymore regarding conventional forces. IF it came to it, the competition would be with nukes. I would hate that. They havent invented a 2 Million degree sun block yet. :)

It's as accurate as you want to pay for it :)

We are talking cm-s

*drool*

Yep, if it's possible and if it's done, I'd absolutely love it. Hell, doing a lowlevel-run from the airbases on the Kola peninsula and down to Bodø should be one hell of a ride, dodging mountains, powerlines and trying to evade the radars on the mountaintops

Maybe so, but the Iraq experience proved having tanks and all the latest weaponary sure as heck won't bring you victory.

IMO, it's a lot less about the numbers, more about the way you employ/use your available assets.

I could seriously make a phone call and get a price on some GIS data the problem is getting it into the game. http://lockon.co.uk/index.php?end_pos=10&scr=list&lang=en here they show how it goes from GIS to Loc-on, However all throughout the forum they say that getting new maps is impossible, something about the code. The other thing to consider is how many square miles are in loc-on now? How much of that actually has 3d terrain and settlements, becides most of the area that is flyable in LOMAC is over water. What happens to file sizes if you put all of Scandinavia in 3d into the game. Oh and all the settlements and buildings are manually placed, a new map could take a very long time to complete.

Sure I would love to have a new map even if it isn't entirely complete, however I can see ED's point of view about the can of worms that would be opened if someone created a map of say Korea/Japan/China, the wining for new flyables would be unbearable. A map of Northern Europe would require British flyables as well as the F-16 flyable with nato markings and anything else I may of left out, new ground units. Heck I just described a new game.

GWII?

Without going much into politics I'll sufice myself by stating that the tactics were all wrong to start with. GWII was/is an entirely new ball game. Even more when the Iraqui army was defeated in days and replaced by another wich is almost unexaustable in terms of manpower, only limited by the birth ratio in certain societies with certain doctrines wich take human costs away from the equation of victory conditions.

In the "bad old days" it was a lot harder to snoop around inside the Alaska ADIZ. Back then NORAD alert birds (F-4s then F-15s) sat alert at Galena (1980-1981 was my tour) and King Salmon AFS. We'd see more TU-16 Badgers and AN-24 Cokes then Tu-95s. They would fly probes to scope out the radar capabilities and intercept procedures & abilities. Every so often, maybe a couple times a month we'd hear "Murphy Dome - ANRACC. Scramble Galena" and the guys would jump in the jets to head out for a closer look. Of course USAF "Ravens" would be (and probably still are) doing much the same thing and we seldom hear about that side of things.

:pilotfly: "penetrated US airspace south-west of Alaska" isn't all that difficult to do. For example Eareckson Air Station on Shemya is 200 miles from Russian airspace and 1500 miles from Elmendorf AFB / Anchorage. Maybe things will be more exciting in the near future when F-22s are based at Elmendorf.

Hey that would be interesting in expanding area of operations so that you will always have to rely on tanker to refuel but not rearms!

The missiles issue has already been fixed with russia, I dont know why it keeps comming to the table. Its not going to Poland anymore.

BTW, I wont and bet my life into unconditional pacifism. Some people say violence never solved anything, I hate violence, but I also dont recall blind pacifism ever solved anything (dont believe in it either, and dont come with Mahatma Ghandi :D ). It only provides easy targets, and theres alot of people who wont second thought about sparing them if they had the oportunity.

Depends on what you base victory, if its removing the Evil Dictator from power then I would say victory was swift.;)
