Hmmm...Pro 2 starting to look pretty good . Does Viveport require controllers to set up ? I would like to purchase 1 base-station and no controllers with the headset for DCS-only application .

If you do that please let us know how it works. I am hoping to do the same when my budget recovers after buying a new computer.

I recommend buying a used Vive wand from eBay in case you need to setup play space, etc.  I’ve seen one as low as $35.  The older model only works with basestation 1.0, so be careful about that.

The Vive Pro 2 is the best headset that I’ve used so far, but you need to know how to set it correctly to get optimal performance.  It’s full of little quirks since HTC pretty much recycled most components from the Vive Pro and the software is still in the premature stage, but the image quality that you can squeeze out of this headset is crazy good.  In MSFS at full res 150%SS it’s just like playing on my 4KTV, but everything is right in my face instead of 3 feet away (fps is bad but ok at 70% rendering scale).

150%! What pixels is that?

I got two base stations and a single controller off of eBay.

During setup I bricked one of the base stations doing the recommended firmware update. I didn't need the controller at all.

One base station ran fine. I later fixed the other one by finding out how to copy the firmware from the good one to the bad. I noticed no difference in tracking with the second one connected.

I never did use the controller.

Regarding controllers the Vive Pro 2 has a system button on the headset, the only thing I used a controller for the Reverb for - to set up options in Steam dashboard. This is a plus and minus - you don't need the controller but it is easy to hit putting on the headset but a swine to find to turn it off!

3990x3990 to 4002x4002 depending on Vive console’s polling at that moment.  I typically run at 70% rendering scale in MSFS setting for playability.  For DCS it is similar concept, I use PD 0.7 leaving Steam SS at default 150%.

Ah ok, so it’s not 150%. I did wonder. That is actually 75%.

A guy over on another forum set his up without controllers no problem.

You don't need VivePort, just the Vive Console software.

For just flight sim you should be fine with one base station.

Still think its a worthwhile upgrade to a G2? I was excited at first, but then after reading the feedback, decided it was probably more of a side grade and maybe not worth dropping the dollars on it. Instead wait for the next gen? My G2 is pretty good and I have just ordered a 3090 PC, so am hoping to be able to crank it up further.....

For me, it’s definitely a great upgrade from the G2. The extra FOV and general feeling of more space in the cockpit is huge.
i just refused an order of £500 for my G2 on eBay, so I’m expecting £550 as final value, so the upgrade is only costing me about £150.

So this is much more than the index ? as you said before you did not notice the extra FOV in the index compared to the G2

I said that?  Don't remember that, but it has been a long time since I owned an Index.

There is just a feeling of so much more space in the cockpit for me with the VP2.  Much less of the diving goggle feel of the G2. Just more aware of your surroundings.

There are other things too, like the image is better, I feel. Blacks are blacker and it just pops a bit more than the G2.

Biggest change in FOV was when I saw my sidewinders when ground spotting. I was like "Never had THAT before, usually have to crank my neck to see my wings!"

Image quality can be a bit subjective, a mix of clarity, colours, shape of image etc. Whilst I found the colours better out of the box with the Vive Pro 2, with reshade now we can improve the G1/G2 but still the VP2 is a bit better. yet clarity wise it was a real wow moment putting the G1 back on. Of course it could be down my eyes, getting a proper fit (although I spent hours fiddling with the Vive Pro 2 straps and swapping face plates trying to get a decent view). Whilst the FOV is nice the binocular overlap where clear lines of the lenses could be seen in the image bothered me, it just detracts from the immersion I just don't get this with the G1. Of course others will find the G1/G2 too restrictive FOV wise, I just like the clear view it provides. The VP2 feels a big clunky headset, I never felt comfortable with it and the back of it kept hitting the race seat I use.

For me the image quality in terms of clarity was a retrograde step but then I don't mind moving my head to get the sweet spot in view nor worry too much about FOV. I actually found the Index the nicest FOV as it had extra vertical as well as horizontal over the G1. In fact if the Index had a higher resolution panel it would be my choice. It is what I hoped the VP2 would be like. In the end it just didn't work for me but there is only one way to find out!

I love my G1 was cheap and cheerful but does a nice job.

Interesting how different people’s  experiences are so different.
It did take a lot of messing around to get the VP2 right, but I found that putting my G2 back on after a VP2 session was a real let down in clarity terms.
IMO, the VP2 at the right setting blows the G2 away in clarity terms, especially as the area of focus is so much wider. It’s that extra focus across the cockpit, as well as the extra FOV that makes the VP2 a better choice, for me, than my G2. The extra resolution is nice as well!

Visual-wise there is no comparison, and I know the Index system really well and that is still being used on another PC.

I can max out my Index visually, and it still doesn’t compare to the Vive Pro 2 that is not maxed out (there is no existing PC that can push this headset to its full potential).

Just to give you an idea, MSFS at full res on the Vive Pro 2 looks mostly as good as my 4KTV except for the glare issue. Right now I can’t run it at full res because of poor framerate but in 1-2 years when we have the next gen CPU and GPU that can drive this thing at 150% SS, I might just stop gaming on my 4KTV.

Fully agree with that, Vive Pro 2 is way better for image quality than Index.

No comparison really.

I wish I hadn't read this thread, I've had my G2 since launch (was my first experience with VR) and I posted my slight dissapointment with the "edge" blur as it wasn't something I even knew existed. Whilst I really enjoy the G2 now having got it setup and becoming accepting of its limitations, that lack of clarity on MFDs, especially on the edge of the sweetspot still niggles me.  It sounds like the VP2 could overcome that and now I'm going to have to deliberate. I did put in a preorder for a Deca just because, but I'm hoping that may satisfy my needs. I also have two G2 headsets here now as HP sent me an RMA after 3 weeks which turned out to be just a cable and never asked for the replacement HMD back. Decisions, decisions! I do really like the inside out tracking (tracking issues accepted) and the lack of ancilliaries required though. No idea where I would put any external lighthouse type things given the amount of computer crap in my "office" already. Losing WMR would also be a huge bonus IMHO.

I would say it could be dependent on the plane as well.

The Vive Pro 2 does very well, but for me the Hornet is not there yet. Everything on the MFD's in the Hornet is not as clear as I would

like it. But in another sim I get very good clarity on the instruments in a WWII plane.

I would say for me with the Hornet in DCS, Vive Pro 2 is slightly better than Reverb G2. Have not tried other modules with it yet. I am not disappointed at all with the VP2 and very glad I have it especially with some other games. The larger horizontal FOV is really nice.

And I am really enjoying not having to mess with WMR any more.

Thanks, that's useful as I mostly fly the Hornet, F14 and recently the Harrier in DCS. The MFD clarity (and of course the shimmers) are the only things that still bug me and are a negative aspect of DCS in VR. I do use another FS from 2020 but less so.

I don't know if there is anything that will get those MFD's in the Hornet crystal clear in VR. May be a limitation of that plane in VR.
