Keep getting crashes, critical errors with steam VR, just switched to a HP G2 from a G1, has anybody had similar experiences?

Its something that happens rarely for me, once a month or less, touch wood, (im on the latest beta for Steam VR and an WMR for Steam VR) on Windows 11 Current release.

You might try cleaning Steam VR and starting fresh with it:

Mine was caused by the cable with my G1. HP sent a replacement and the regular Steam VR critical error crashes disappeared.

I get crash on exit in SteamVR almost every time with my VP2.  Vive support have looked into it, and it is a SteamVR issue, not relating to the Vive software at all.

its getting really annoying now its happening after every mission, I start dcs I load a mission fine I then attempt to load a second flight and it crashes and I have to restart steam vr and dcs. I keep changing from non-beta to beta and it makes no difference.

Well I would double check your OC CPU or GPU. try running them at either stock speeds for the CPU and maybe underclock the GPU. the slightest unstable system with DCS will cause issues NOT seen in other games and such..

I don't think it is my overclock, I had a reverb G1 before and its since changing to a G2 that I've had the constant steam VR crashes.

If you haven't already, try opting out of the SteamVR and/or WMR betas.

have you forced a windows update? all the drivers and firmware up to date?

I've had some crashes but not sure if it's the same thing. Headset displays solid blue, DCS desktop mirror freezes and the steamvr performance trace stops until DCS is closed via task manager.

I seem to get the crashes if HAGS is enabled, which is a double edged sword as enabling HAGS eliminates the apparent vram usage overrun bug. Disable HAGS and I don't get the blue screen crash but I do get the tanked performance if I don't restart DCS between missions.

Win10 pro, all drivers up to date, steamvr beta and DCS latest beta.

Which is usually a good idea. Up to date bios has been a really good idea lately, especially on the AMD side.  Up to date GPU driver is usually a good idea.  Windows updates haven't seem to have hurt anything lately but ya never know.   Windows 11 has been problematic. When I installed steam vr a couple of months ago even steam said it wasn't compatible with Win11

Worth checking the Startup tab in Task Manager from time to time, and deactivate everything you can live without.

Assuming nothing wrong with the system, I'd consider stress testing the GPU (eg Unigine Superposition) -- watch thermals, make sure it's benchmarking where it's supposed to -- and CPU (I use Prime 95).  Note, it is possible to get a bad GPU.  Sometimes you can prove it by checking VRAM (good article on that here.)

Moving on to VR.  VR has always been really picky about what USB ports you use for what.  Mobo upgrades have helped a lot in that regard, lately.  Still.  The Reverb in particular is gonna have a USB port it likes, usually one on the back that's wired direct into the mobo.  Once you find one it likes, use that same one every time.  I still have to unplug it, and plug it back in fairly frequently.

And then there's the charlie-foxtrot that is the WMR/WMR4SVR/SVR/DCS ecosystem.  I'm not even sure what to tell you about that.  There's a dark art to figuring out what to start when, in what order, and how.  Skatezilla's "DCS Updater" helps a lot here.  It's sort of a "DCS Dashboard" you can access from under the hood if you want to.  Among other things, you can turn off Steam Home and let the Updater boot up the runtime and DCS, It's not perfect but it does a better job of that than I do.  The "repair" utility is a lifesaver.

Even when it works, it doesn't always work.  I don't know about you guys but I have to start over at least once every session.  Like, just reboot and start all over.

Thud's guide is a little hard to follow but it's worth the persistence.  Not possible to go wrong if you can follow it.  Literally everything in there is important, and was no doubt learned the hard way.

Concur, took the plunge with W11 a week ago and all is good, maybe even slightly better than W10.

The system feels generally more performant, but I don't just use it for DCS. I also haven't measured anything scientifically.

2 years ago i suffer constant SteamVR crashes (error 203 i think) but only in DCS and Elite Dangerous. After tried almost every fix in the forum or the web i found, by accident, that was my GPU default OC. So, i underclocked my GPU about 85hz and never had crashes since. Sometime ago i tried to reset my GPU to the default OC settings to check if the issues persists and DCS crashed again, so, i return to underclocked again my GPU. Try to underclock your GPU and give feedback please.

I skimmed through some of this so sorry if already asked, but when the crash occurs, does DCS create a crash report or is it a Steam only crash?  If DCS also creates a report you could look through that and see what might be triggering it.  Also, I'll second the suggestion that a bad overclock could be the culprit.  It could run fine 99.99999% of the time, but the slightest little thing could cause it to crash.  I've had plenty of experience with this!  Bad overclock runs fine on everything I throw at it except one specific program or game.  I don't fully recall the specs of a G1, but my guess is it's lower than a G2, so your PC is pushing harder to power the resolution and etc., which makes a bad overclock stick out more.

Also, does the Windows Event viewer generate any logs?  If it's a bad gpu overclock (and it's nvidia) you'll usually see like a nvkd.dll error or something like that.  It's been a while since I've seen that (when testing an overclock) so I can't remember exactly what it shows.  A bad cpu overclock will mostly crash the entire system and event viewer will give you something like WHEA error APIC0, which is specifying that a specific core crashed the system (most likely under powered for what it was trying to achieve).
