DCS: Mosquito FB VI livery competition

@Raptorattacker. I think that you will really enjoy skinning with PBR and Roughmets. Way more control than the alpha in IL2. I hope that IL2 will incorporate PBR in the future.

I don't think that you have to have purchased any individual module in order to make a skin for it.

The world of lua files is going to be something to get a grip on though... 🤣

Swedish De Haviland Mosquito J30 S.Nr.30001 Röd Adam (Red A) from first division at F1 Hässlö.

This livery is based on the Swedish night fighter variant of the Mosquito which featured a radar in a bulbous nose and a 4 blade prop. Sweden bought 60 of this type in 1948 and assigned them to F1 Hässlö as a night fighter unit and operated them until 1954 when issues with the airframe breaking apart from unknown reasons got too bad and the aircraft was temporarily replaced with the De Haviland Venom (J33) as it had to be retired earlier than expected. The remaining aircraft were unceremoniously cut up and burned so none survive today.

Hate to be that ungrateful guy, but gotta ask: would you consider making a camo version as well? 😉

@Art-J. I agree that the original photo looks like it might be camo. So here's that version. I added some more weathering "eye candy" and corrected some copy / paste mistakes in the original weathering. This will be updated into the silver versions.

Impressive! I didn't think you could improve it but you just did. Love the handprints btw.

In three individual downloads, here are three different schemes, in two different variations each.  Totaling 6 liveries, collectively.  If concerned about disk space, see the bottom of this post.
-305Sqn 1944
-Standard RAF 1944
-Standard w/ White Spinner RAF 1944

Each comes in two variations, depending on time period:
-June, 1944: invasion bands wrap completely around the aircrafts' wing and tail
-July, 1944: invasion bands eliminated from the top surfaces of the wings and tail

These liveries are oringinally intended to fully emcompass the 138 and 140 Wing of the RAF, which were highly active over France in 1944, prior to and during the invasion.  Each Wing has three squadrons.
-138 Wing
--107Sqn (Bort code: OM) (Standard RAF 1944)
--305Sqn (Bort code: SM) (305Sqn 1944)
--613Sqn (Bort code: SY) (Standard w/ White Spinner RAF 1944)
-140 Wing
--21Sqn (Bort code: YH) (Standard w/ White Spinner RAF 1944)
--464Sqn (Bort code: SB) (Standard RAF 1944)
--487Sqn (Bort code: EG) (Standard RAF 1944)

Included in the liveries:null
-Two variations: June (top and bottom stripes), and July (bottom stripes only)
-Highly detailed invasion stripe textures, replicating the sloppy and rushed nature that stripes were applied.
-Full workable bort codes for all liveries

BORT NUMBERS:
Each and every livery has fully workable bort numbers for the best mission flexibility.  Realistically, the RAF rushed the painting of their stripes so fast, that bort codes were painted over by the stripes.  This can be replicated by entering a '-' (dash) in the first two positions of a bort code, in the Mission Editor or Rearm Window.  If you do not want to have the invasion bands paint over your bort codes, you may enter your bort code as regular, and it will be visible.
Regarding the July versions, the RAF still left the remaining paint or new paint to often (though not always) paint over their old squadron ID codes/bort numbers.  This only makes the top half of the letters visible.  This is replicated in these liveries, while still being adjustable in DCS.
Here's some photos of what can be expected:

DISK SPACE CONSIDERATIONS:
All six of these liveries are made with the ability to function independently of each other.  This means that between the six of them, there are a lot of repeated textures.  If all six of these liveries are installed, this takes up nearly 1GB of storage:
image.png
However, through the description.lua of each livery, it is possible to have liveries borrow textures from one another.  Using this, I've also made a version of the RAF White and Polish liveries that borrow up to 7 textures from the RAF Standard liveries.  This lowers the disk space consumed from 1GB to only 437MB.
image.png
These versions of the liveries can be downloaded from HERE.
(Update: 13Mar2023, in this link above, also added two new liveries in the same variation, to cover night fighting squadrons with their red bort numbers.  File size only increased to 442MB)

I have added two new liveries to the disk space version at the bottom.  This only increases the disk space by 5MB, to 442MB total for 8 liveries.  They are of a generic RAF scheme, but with the red bort numbers of the night fighting squadrons.  While we don't have the appropriate Mosquito for such, I hope it at least opens the possibility to get as close to them as possible.
Here is the LINK, again.
Cheers! 🍵

OK, stick a fork in this 'cause I'm callin it done. Special thanks to @Helles Belle and @BusDriver for their research determining that it probably didn't have letter codes. Eroded paint on prop blades. This is pretty much what most props looked like when an aircraft came in to our shop for a 100hr or Annual inspection. We would file out the nicks and apply "touch-up" paint. (Actually, we rattle canned the most of the blades but the FAA allows only "touch-up". Otherwise, it has to be done by a certified Prop Repair Station.

Blueish exhaust staining. I've seen this effect on high powered planes. I's pretty subtle. I enhanced it here for some drama.

Cheers,

I can't even use ModelViewer, I have a post in the bug reports section but all my work has been done repeatedly re-launching DCS and going into Mission Editor. ModelViewer crashes immediately after I launch it and I don't have a log folder or edModelViewer2 folder and creating one hasn't stored any logs so I'm at an impass there. I'd love to get it to work so I could get the lua lines easier.

RAF 605 "Count of Warwick" Sqn pack, containing a generic livery (with fixed squadron code, UP, but dynamic airplane code and serial number), UP-O/HJ808, and UP-J/NS838, better known as Wag's "War Wagon". The latter is currently operated by the Flying Heritage Museum, and reference images of that aircraft were the primary source for this project.

NNhJXgp.png

wmKQJDy.png

Z4GjnKu.png

0TMOFTr.png

UP9cWaf.png

Features include:

- Custom stencils, based off reference images (surprisingly, the IRL UP-J seems to have no markings for either fuel OR oil).

- Intentional minor misalignment of the camo scheme, based off reference images.

- Use of common folders, so despite being three liveries, it takes up only 50% more space than the generic livery by itself would.

- Full custom roughmets.

RcvcIJm.png

- Brush stroke effects on all four roundels, the fin flash, and the radio codes of UP-O and UP-J.

xVV3vUU.png

- Not sure exactly how to describe it, but the effect you see on most airbrushed aircraft (including the War Wagon) where the very edge of the camo is a lot duller than the rest of it. It's not very visible from most angles, but it really pops when the lighting is right, and that's been recreated here.

If there are issues with either the swastika kill markings and German law regarding those, or Popeye (presumably) being a copyrighted figure, I've also made a version that replaces the swastikas with Iron Crosses, and removes the Popeye nose art.

mRMJeps.png

8aetQUs.png

If needed, I'm more than happy to make another version with either swastika kill markings but no Popeye, or Popeye but Iron Crosses, but it seemed excessive to make four separate uploads for a single competition.

Oh crap. I didn't think of that Since it's a depiction of a historical non-Segar illustration I think it's exempt. The only country, AFAIK, where it isn't public domain is the US.

@static_actual, beautiful attention to detail and great use of roughmets! Impressive.
