To me it's a 'win some, lose some' situation.

It's great for me to see that demand for ED's product is so strong.

It's a bit disconcerting that even though they now play in a higher league, their systems aren't up to the task.

If there was another good reason to use Steam instead of standalone, I think we have just seen it: Steam's systems didn't even blink, and so I was able to update, purchase, download within 15 minutes. And it wasn't plagued with the 'offline' bug. I believe that's the price a company has to pay when they enter the big league: access to professional partners with experience.

Isn't that a bit out of scale? All those concerns from a one time occurrence? I can hardly remember such a big problem with the servers. ...and you can bet they will look into it and draw conclusions.

I have no problem with Steam. I have a big library there. But praising Steam of all - as if it was flawless? Come on! 🙃

Apologies if I came across that way. Steam is far from flawless. What I meant to say is that Steam are part of the price at sitting at the big boys table. They provide a form of service (24/7 high-capacity bandwidth, great communication services, international distribution, name recognition and trust, battle-proven authentication, offline capability etc.) that ED is hard-pressed to replicate at the same cost. Steam is far from perfect, but they do have their definite upside. I don't think ED will be able to replicate Steams reliability at cost, so it makes sense to partner with them as they do. And for customers like me, that added value becomes visible. Just like it did with Normy 2, even though that didn't go down without a hitch either.

The big test is going to be in a few weeks (2 of course 🙂 ) when the Mudhen arrives. Let's hope that ED is better prepared for that onslaught.

Except that when Steam itself has authentication issues - you can't play any of your games, at all. Not even offline.

At least with DCS if they have issues, I can still get it to run offline and fly solo.

I will never, ever return to Steam for a game platform if I can get the game directly from developers.  I've been burned by the Steam too many times.

I've been on Steam for years and never had that issue. I'm not saying others haven't experienced it, but Steam has been very stable for me.

Nice to have several options for getting DCS though.

Anyone have any comments on the content of the patch, rather than the installation debacle?

Looking forward to the Gazelle, still undecided on Sinai.  It looks great, however, perhaps superficially similar to the Syria map, but with fewer Western/NATO basing options.  Also waiting to hear about VR performance before I hit the 'buy' button.

Until there's some decent SP-content for Sinai, I will hold off on purchasing that map. No reason clogging up my SSD while at the same time needlessly freeing up space on my bank account. 🙂  (should be the other way round!). Once there's quality content for some/ any of the modules I own, I certainly will pull the trigger, as the map does look great.

You could give the mission editor a try, I’m already editing my first mission for the Gazelle using this Map.

Any idea of when stable is getting the patch to allow the Sinai map?

As soon as we have looked at the data for open beta and are happy there are no stoppers we will consider a stable update. At this time I dont have a date.

thank you

I don't mean to be argumentative, but the map itself is more than decent SP content. It's a very nice map. 👍

After this update all of my purchased props had the Take of Assistant set back to 100%. All bar the TF-51D and the SU-25T (no slider for ToA for this AC)

Is this known or unexpected?

Yeah... already bought it now (inevitable really 🤣).  First impressions are it looks great.  Performance is varied, depending on where on the map, with densely built-up areas performing worst (no surprise). I've often found that maps receive a little VR optimisation after release and improve.  I've had less than an hour on it so far though, but Sinai has pushed SoH further down the pecking order, putting it in serious danger of an uninstall.

Huh. Now, many of us purchase it now so we can create decent content and then share it with others. You may try this as well, as creating missions can be very rewarding 🙂

What he said! 👍

Half the fun of a great new map like Sinai is the million and one things you can do with it in the mission editor. Limitless SP content.

And just to stay on topic, Sinai a great map. with surprisingly good performance. Looking forward to trying out the new Gazelle on it soon.

I meant payware 3rd party campaigns. I do like story-driven content. Sandboxes, not so much.

I don't have enough free time for DCS as it is, never mind spending additional time learning the mission editor, then even more time building missions that I know how they'll play out because I've built them. At the moment I can get in two or three hours a week if I'm lucky. I'd rather spend that time in a cockpit.

Instead of spending time with an activity that I'm not good at, and which will cause a lot of frustration, pulling of hair, shaking of fists, and smashing of keyboards, I'll instead purchase the excellent work of the ever growing lineup of content creators whose skill with the editor I will never, ever be able to match.

The Sinai map doesn't go anywhere, so I'll purchase it whenever I feel the time is right. I did that with every other map I own, and so far haven't had any regrets.

YMMV.

Edit: Please nobody get hung up on the term "decent". I did not mean to say that non-payware missions/ campaigns are not decent. I was trying to express - apparently in a too hasty way - "decent amount of content that is entertaining to me". For example, I did enjoy Sedlo's freeware Red Flag campaigns very much!

Just took the Zelle fro a quick jaunt from Ben Gurion to Tel Aviv Waterfront. Performance in VR is great. Gazelle's new flight model: a really, really good update, a new bird.

There is also the new nav pad. In VR that's a no-go because unfortunately they messed up the reflections, but you can remove the pad in ME, and then you have an even better view of where you are going. The zelle is the new visibility king, and it's finally a real fun to fly (before, it went pathological on you below 45 km/h). Enjoy the new Zelle!

Maybe one day, whenever I have (a lot!) more free time on my hands.

Or, once someone finds a way to create an interface between the DCS ME and some "image-generator" like AI, where I can describe what I want a mission/ campaign to be like, and the AI creates it in the mission editor for me. That would be perfect, and probably a lot less "futuristic" than one would assume (or would have assumed even a year ago). 🙂

Amen to all of that. But can't you just fold the iPad out of the way?

I've got to load that chopper up. And you are so right about it being the visibility king. It's great that it got so much love.

So, for those of that aren't home and haven't updated yet, should be unaffected when we do?

Definitely lots of styles of flying for them to try and account for. But I'm sure there will be some excellent campaigns for Sinai for you people😉

The new upcoming campaign feature comes to mind.
I'm in the same boat as you.
I build som simple missions for testing stuff and fly around. But for the DCS "experience", I rather rely on other more professional designers.

Cheers!
