Very, very, rough idea...

Or maybe just start with optional brighter director lights on the tanker.

(I know they are quite dim irl, but everything is better than immersion breaking overlays imho)

I feel like it would be an excuse NOT to improve the the real director lights. When this overlay would be just an immersion breaking substitute anyway.

Such solution may be required for some configurations when lights are a mile away on an aircraft carrier on final - but not on the tanker when the lights are merely 100ft (!) away from pilot's eyes... Come on, they cen do better than that, they can improve the lights visibility from such a short distance, without such artificial distraction.

Why not both? I think an overlay will be excellent to learn the position and the sight picture of where you are supposed to be. Only aircraft I struggle somewhat with is the A-10s, because I can't see the lights at all. When learned, just disable it. Even add a keybind for it.

Yes, why not both?!! I think an overlay could be a good addition, but of course it should not be an excuse for ED to ignore the need for better visibility of the director lights on the actual tanker...

This seems like a good idea. No different than IFLOS, the Controls Indicator, Cargo indicator etc.   Optional of course.

Not sure why you need the overlay when you can just look at the lights on the tanker. Yes they’re a bit dim but I can still see them clearly in this small screenshot.
They appear well enough in this example

First, something like this would be an option, just like the IFLOLS for the SCM. If you don't want it, take a ten-twenty second jaunt through the settings, and turn it off.

Some people have a hard time seeing the lights at all. Sure, you can probably see them just fine in VR, or with a high enough resolution screen and GPU... but not everyone has that... actually... for that matter... I'd be willing to bet money that at least 40% or more of the community is running the game with a computer that can run it at OK settings, and using lower-end controls.

If my estimate is correct, then this option would likely help a fairly significant portion of the community, which in turn leads to better investment into DCS, which means more money spent on modules, etc.

A small bit of development time to make AAR a little easier... and ED will reap the rewards. I can only see this as an absolute win.

how about making it optional? Looking at the super carrier I can see why the overlay is a good and why it isn't

it'd be pretty weird because none of the tankers have the same light array layout.

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),
