can I ask those of you who have X-plane 10:

what is the difference between x-plane 10 30 buck version (north american) and 70 buck version -10 + 40 degree version? one is only NA? all aircrafts in NA or just global?

If you read the descriptions you will find that the difference is just the terrain. I have no idea what a '-10+40 degree' version is.

Like Cichlidfan said, I believe the difference is just the terrain (the EDIT - it's the area that you get. The pricey edition gets the whole world to fly in!).

Regarding the aircraft, I've never been a fan of the default aircraft that's in X-Plane. You really need to buy some of the addon aircraft, e.g. Carenado make some nice ones if you want attention to detail coupled with eye candy!

The same is true with Prepar3D 1.4 ... the default aircraft really suck IMO, but Carenado make some nice one's for P3D as well. With P3D I would also recommend REX Essential to beautify an essentially dog ugly sim :D. With REX my P3D environmental is breathtakingly beautiful, even more so that X-Plane 10 (maybe not ... jury's not out on this). Top that off with a Carenado quality aircraft and ... say no more, say no more ... ;)

"A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft."

Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

Hehe .. well yes, these too of course, but I think you need the migration tool!

I haven't bothered with UTX and GEX yet but Orbx migrates perfectly.

Great pics EagleEye :)

Waiting for FC3 I've considered buying one of them (FSX or X-Plane)

I've read a lot of "x-plane vs fsx" thread, most of them from the early days of x-plane 10.

I must say I don't really know which one to choose, from what I've heard x-plane is a more serious sim with way better physics but on the other hand fsx offers a huge amount of aircraft, sceneries, etc...and there's the VRS superbug...hmmm

So I'm looking for any suggestion/opinion/advice

Thank you.

Not a easy decision if you really want to choose one of both. I bought XP to practise with the Dreamfoil R22 helicopter. I think, it is the best simulation for the R22 you can get on PCs currently. XP get better and better with the patches. They recently added a nice menu. FSX will not be patched anymore. The only hope so far is Prepar3D.

Yes, FSX have a huge amount of addons and that ORBX terrain is breathtaking. With VRS Superbug and TacPack we will able to fight around the globe. Though that all cost much money if you want to customize it for youre liking. You have to ask yourself what you want to do with it. I would not recommend to buy them if you just need something to play with until FC3 arrive.

Well the idea of flying from Hong-Kong to New York in a 747 isn't really driving me crazy, that's a fact.

I'm looking at these sim for the sheer size of their "map" and the variety they offer.

The thing is with FSX I'm afraid to find the flight model too easy and not challenging enough and on the other hand with Xplane I'm afraid to fly in an empty world.

I want FSX for all the details (ground crews, airport "activities", "populated a/c carrier, etc) and that feeling you have to evolve in a living world" but I know I'll need to invest around €200.

That's quite a lot of money for a 7 years old game.

You can try x-plane demo. But if you like to deviate from your international flight plan to blow sh!t up here and there then you'll be sorely disappointed. The FM feels kinda weird, too. I'm no expert but DCS flyables feel more alive for some reason.

ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P

Personally I like the flight model in X-Plane way better than in FSX. Both have their strength and weaknesses, but I would go for X-Plane. Some of the reasons for that:

  • X-Plane, like DCS, is in active and quite open development, with developers who talk with their customers. FSX on the other hand, as a plattform, is dead and dated.
  • Prepar3D looks promising but only the future will tell.
  • There is a lot of momentum going with 3rd party development for X-Plane at the moment, which I personally find quite exciting.

That is just a short answer, a real comparison would be quite long. Neither FSX nor X-Plane are perfect, in the end it's all personal preference and on what planes or sceneries are available on what platform.

Good points Toxe.

That's indeed the impression I have after browsing several community websites.

I also found out that you can actually buy X-Plane 10 for...$29 (digital version with USB key). Am I right ?

I could be wrong, but my take on that was you "unlock" the demo with the USB key (demo mode joystick disables after 10mins). The demo has a limited amount of terrain data, so if you go outside that narrow window, you will see nothing but water and the run way you're sitting on. Nice for frame rates, bad for immersion ;).

My only complaint with x-plane 10 currently is the lack of buildings at airports. I like to fly out of my local airports in a civi sim and the lack of buildings really kills that immersion factor. It's not a deal breaker for me and it's a common complaint with x-plane users. Although what they've done with the roads/highways/houses and overall night lighting makes up for it to a large degree.

I think the cheaper version only covers a smaller part of the world, but I don't know the exact details.

Yeah that's true. A lot of the default airports are just runways with one or two ugly buildings slapped next to them. But there is a ton of free airports, built by the community.

BTW, a nice site to keep up with X-Plane scenery and airplane developement, releases and reviews is: http://xsimreviews.com/

And while we are on the top of airports, this one looks pretty nice. :)

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
