The only explanation is that clearly somehow one of the clusters became sentient and directed itself towards the nearest Russian satellite. My grandfather was in 24 Squadron too! He served in around 1941-42 I think. He was actually called back to SA to continue with the running of a tin mine for the war effort. There is a very good chance they could have known each other!
