DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

Afaik ED never confirmed "yes, Georgia map will run under EDGE", but it was always clear (to me at least) that the map could not possibly be dropped by ED and leave us with only Nevada in the future.

So there were then two options:

a) let Georgia run under the old engine and Nevada under EDGE

b) make Georgia run under EDGE as would Nevada

Option a) would be technological suicide - maintaining two different graphics engines. What would be the benefit - it would only complicate things A LOT.

Option b) seems the logical way: make the Georgia map data displayable under EDGE. I.e. convert the data to the new EDGE format, possibly by automated tools, even if Georgia - without adding manual work - would perhaps not be able to make use of many of the new features EDGE may provides.

Spot on.

Nate

Thanks.

A map is a map... Graphics renderer is not a map :)

EDGE is new graphics renderer (directx 11) and Nevada is the new map.

These shots are from existing map running in new graphics renderer.

Awesome. Really pleased the Caucuses are still flyable! Given the above though will we still get multi-gpu support if flying that map (even if without all the other fancy things that might be present only in NTTR/other new maps)?

Note the terrain in the Black sea does not take advantage of all of the edge features, to do so would require a complete rebuild of the terrain.

Nate

Same question as above. Can you elaborate any more about the particular features?

Also stop feeding the troll.

I can't sorry. Info has to come from ED themselves.

Nate

I think most of us can respect that Nate, but IF you could get permission to post a few screenies from testing that would be nice. :music_whistling:

npole - I suspect that when edge is finally released, 95% of the time - if you took a screenshot - there'd be things in it that you could point to and say 'compared to game "x" this could be improved'.

That's perfectly understandable and obvious... we're not asking for the perfection, we may desire constant improvements (possible improvements.. not the impossible ones).

I can tell you that in the builds we're testing there are times as I fly along when I just look out the window and think to myself 'that looks SO real'

Good to know.. can't wait to try it myself, better gfx is always welcome, whenever i'm more anxious to test the other possibilities that EDGE will opens.

That is up to Wags to do. He is the one that posts shots, atleast until release.

The Pics look great all but I'd like to know what stage we are at with this. This has gone on for so long now that it's still unclear if it's a long way from release or if it is just around the corner. Pics are fine but information is so much better. I'm not even asking for release dates here, I'd just like to know where we are with it.

I don't want to misunderstand this, but... what does it mean? Are you testing a 2D version of DCS?

No :) I do just mean I'm looking at it on a 2D monitor...

Cheers.

ONTOPIC,

i think those screenshots look excellent and do show a massive improvement over what we have now.

If the performance improves likewise we may just have a winner once EDGE comes out.

 Yeah, agree!!!

Yes, it was said that the old map would still be there. Still, it was always my understanding that it would be option a), however awkward it would be.

And I don't think I'm alone, just look here for examples.

Anyway, great to know that it will be able to run on the new engine.

Yes, that is expected, of course.

Testing Stage

I'd call it WIP Stage :p

DX12 is coming out supposedly is much faster than DX11, any chance that EDGE could be easily upgraded or that would require a new renderer?

DirectX 12 is at least 8 months away, and while promises to have Low Level API, there's only a slide and rumors about it, they said it to save face over mantle.

And DX12 will be a Windows 9.0 Exclusive.

Till ED doesn't do true multi core app, nothing will help.

It is not matter of CPU, but application.

Even now DCS has huge requirements.

Removing the Bottleneck and CPU Overhead from DX9, and moving to DX11 will solve alot more than you think.

How would spreading the CPU load across multiple cores help anything at all if it is pretty much idle anyway? That was supposed to be the other way around, I guess.

And then DX11 is supposed to help with that, i.e. render more complex graphics with less CPU load and thus better utilize the GPU.

DX11 Spreads Drawcalls and the DX Processes across multiple threads instead of overloading a single thread.

Not commenting on the screenshots themselves (my God, the never-ending debates...), but I am still puzzled by something that has been pointed out in the early pages, and I would like to get back to it.

I thought it was said that the Caucasus map could not posibly work in the new IG, and would have to be redone from scratch for that to be possible.

From the Nevage/EDGE FAQ:

So, this has apparently changed, since we now have screenshots of the very Black Sea map running in EDGE.

I'm just puzzled by the contradiction, but hey, if it's just thatt ED figured a way to have the old map work in the new IG, then that is a great news by itself (maybe that should have been the news, then !)

PRetty sure since ED has the Source Files for Caucaus, its a matter of some adjustments and it can most likely be re-exported to use the EDGE IG easily without having to be rebuilt from the ground up. You may not get the new EDGE IG Advanced things like Clip Maps or Hi-Res Terrain Meshes, but You'll get the basic DX11 stuff (shaders, processing, CPU overhead reductions etc) from the move to DX11

Would the community be able to mod and enhance the old Caucasus map once Map Tools are available for EDGE?

I doubt ED will release the source Files for their Caucaus map to be modified as it's their IP or IP Under Contract of whomever made it for ED, Whichever.

if you want to re-do it with all the bells and whistles you'd have to start your own from scratch.

What you're asking is the Equivalent of ED posting the .MAX Files for the A-10C, it's not gonna happen.

Yeah, makes sense. If not for those legal complications, it could perhaps be of some mutual benefit though. That´s just why I asked.

From an amateur point of view it would of course be very tempting to get a glance at the inner workings of FMs. :)

There are many sources for map data but they all usually want money for the use of it.

And then you would have to convert that data into format used in DCS and add other stuff like trees, houses etc. to make it look like actual world. So there's lot of work and costs involved as well, not only IP/copyright reasons.

That doesn't sound promising if anyone is expecting this in the near future. Edge is WIP and has been for how long now? Testing it sounded much better.

cheats a bit more

The FMs at least looked pure arcade - if that.

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

Windows 9.0...... nooooooo

But according to the rules, this will actually be a good OS.

When it comes to the old map, I really want to know how realistic it would be for ED to add the old old map to it.

EDGE/Nevada is the future, but does that mean Caucuses are dead and development is at this moment not considered at all? One big consideration is that Nevada as is has no ocean (but if map size is unlimited there is one near by that can be added). On the other hand the Black Sea is very different from the Pacific factoring it that's completely surrounded by land.

According to performance: Is there any chance that radeon owners get decent framerate? I mean it's kind a frustrating to own high-end GPU, that runs most demanding games flawlessly, and get my butt kicked in terms of FPS by 4-years old nVidia's.
