They had shown screenshots and a short video, As others have said that focus has been drawn away from EDGE right now to deal with other tasks, so updates havent been showns as of late, I am sure once they get back hard at it they will show more. But if you dont have anything to show beyond what you already have, what are they supposed to do....

ED has ideas and money, but it isn't money coming from investors (AFAIK) ie. publishing houses like, for example, Bungie. They're not paid for the game up-front, therefore they must continuously develop and sell things to keep going.

Yes and that is exactly what you cannot compare, i doubt ED has the money to pitch projects to such hights? teach me if im wrong

Those old pics and video are the most curious thing. One of the last things we were told was that Nevada needed EDGE to work. The question I posted somewhere, that was never answered, is 'If Nevada requires EDGE to work, how were those pics and video made?'.

What is so curious about it? That they have a partial functioning Engine, that they can make a few screenshots and a short video from? I am not sure what is so curious about it... You assume EDGE hasnt been worked on at all?

This post should answer your question, specifically point 3. They had a working build capable of running Nevada, but not capable of playing Nevada.

A few items to reiterate:

1- Much of the Nevada map is done, but aspects of it could certainly change between now and release.

2- The original effort was done by a third party, but for various reasons, that effort did not work out and the Eagle team basically had to re-start it from scratch.

3- Due to the massive number of ground objects, elevation mesh detail, and texture sizes, a new image generator (IG) had to to be created in order to run it at more than single digit frame rates. Creating a new IG is a huge undertaking and it takes a lot of time. More so than anything else, this has been the reason behind the delay.

4- There has been no change in our plan to make this map available for free to those that purchased the A-10C beta.

5- Given the nature of the map, I would imagine that most missions will revolve around training, but certainly large Red Flag type campaigns are also possible.

6- We have no ETA at this time.

When there is a change to any of the above, there will be official news of it.

For a partially working engine, it looked pretty good. So the impression after a year, with no update, would be that not much more progress has been made.

If its all under the hood work being done, what is there to show? I am sure they wont share new code on the forums.... but thats just a guess.

The last nevada info on ED 2013 DCS:W newsletter

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=103090

Moving to 64-bit Operating Systems Only

As we move forward improving the DCS World environment, we are more and more often running into roadblocks that prevent us from doing so due to supporting 32 bit operating systems. This includes larger and more populated worlds with greater terrain mesh details and textures. By moving to 64 bit support only, we will be able solve this and allow larger missions with more units, and it will allow us to improve visual effects.

This change will be coming in the next few months.

......

The team is also hard at work on many updates and changes to our world rendering system, which will allow us to make new and much more detailed worlds than we have now, including the Nevada map. We hope to have these changes in place before the end of the year.

With the combination of a large and varied stable of aircraft, along with upcoming new maps, we will continue moving forward toward our goal of DCS World allowing combat missions over a wide array of time periods and locations. While our products initially started with a focus on modern day jets, this is now expanding to include World War 2, Korea, Vietnam and modern day content.

Sincerely,

The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics Team

Based on the posts available, it looks like Nevada itself is practically finished, so they could easily publish tons of new, unique screenshots if they wanted, but they probably don't want to build up any hype until EDGE is closer to ready. I would not expect anything before 1.2.4 is released at the very least.

Nevada could be done, but if EDGE is still in progress, screenshots might not be possible. Nevada is dependent on EDGE. If EDGE is in a state of code where it is not running fully, Nevada cannot be loaded and therefore screenies cant be taken

I would assume that they have an old build archived that is capable of loading Nevada at the slow frame rates previously mentioned, but my assumption could be wrong, or Nevada might have fundamentally changed enough to no longer be compatible with the old build (although again I would assume old copies of Nevada are archived). Also, it's probably a pain to set up nice looking screenshots at low FPS.

this statement not true: GGTharos already posted a Mi-8/17-sim video over Nevada-map a year ago (was quickly deleted :( )

video was smooth and nice

I based my statements only on the information that is available to me (unless prefaced with "assume"). That video is not available to me, however if it was enough years ago, it may have been an old copy of pre-EDGE Nevada.

You can make a video today with pre-EDGE Nevada. I have flown the P-51 out of Nellis.

I hope they don't try to make EDGE backward compatible with Black Sea Map!

Like 32-bit systems, they should abandon Black Sea, and make the best Simulation Engine ever:

- True 64-bit software

- Multi-Core

- Visual C++ 2012

- DirectX 11

- PhysX 3.0

Let's fly together for the sake of peace :)

PhysX 3.0

I dont think they shouldnt use PhysX. AFAIK PhysX is an engine that allows you to do stuff like fluid dynamics accelerated by the GPU (if it supports it). However, a combat simulation doesnt need that. I personally think that the water dynamics of the current engine arent so bad after all. The flatness of the water should be gone with EDGE and some waves (depending on the wind) would be nice either, but i dont think the waves should be physically correct if it is going to cost tons of performance. The current water crash effects arent realistic, but arent too complex either.

Instead, DCS needs advanced aerodynamics and ballistics as well as some weather simulation.

I think PhysX would be too polarising as it would exclude a large chunk of the market who don't have PsysX hardware.

They have stated that there are no plans for ED to redo the current map in EDGE, although it would be cool to see if a third party or modder could do that and re-include Crimea or even expand the map in whichever directions they see fit.

I'd love to see a Korean Peninsula or Balkans or, lets face it, just about anywhere map.

Ok my 2 Cents,.

EDGE was stated to be a Image Rendering engine, meaning it's the Render, Meaning it's the Base of all graphics.,

terrain engine, shader effects, everything, goes through the renderer.

whether EDGE Officially stands for Eagle Dynamics Graphics Engine or not, it doesnt change the fact that it's was stated to be the renderer.

So EDGE will/should effect more than just the Terrain that it Renders.

-------------------

On the topic of backwards compatibility, i belive it was stated that EDGE will be in use for the Nevada Map and Future maps, current Caucaus map will use the same rendering engine we have now ( cant find the exact post that stated that), Whether or not they decide to update Caucaus to the new engine, i havent got a clue.

-------------------

PhsyX is a Gimmick, it's a API that offers pre-built "Effects",

it's mainly used to calculate flow and collision detection with flowing objects Basically, (water, smoke, curtains, debris, whatever).

I have yet to see any "PhysX" title advertise Hyper Realistic Bullet Dynamics. or anything that pertains to a flight sim.

ED's Internal Physics is most likely a good deal more complex than anything PhysX can offer.
