I think you'll find it goes against EDs whole ethos. If they won't put A-A missiles on the Shark because they haven't been used in service, they really aren't going to add a helicopter that never entered service.

I also have found memories of the Commanche games. I think the terrain engine they used was ground breaking at the time.

hi /wave , im new to the forums and game but if i had a vote id def go to the apache :D

in reguards to the 2 seater thing ( even tho most the helos ive quickly browsed are 2 seaters too?) surely ai can handle the 2nd position ( as with most ppl here i would expect that to be the gunner seat whilst they/we fly :P)?

plus on a side note , how much more interesting and complex would multiplayer get with 2 players in one helo? ( obviously if it can be incorporated into the sim as other helo "games" have done)

naz

p.s and o.t @dcs you have the mother of all helo sims ive ever played! thank you!!!!

Guys.. " I want this, I want that .."

I know that DCS makes things according to their contracts with the army.. but SORRY, when you are making a very accurate sim for a .. MUSTANG, What the h*ll is going on ? Who is still using that old warbird today ? That's a nonsense.

So I don't know why the Huey or Blackhawk are not a " realistic choice ", they are STILL in use today, all other the world.. the 51 is just used on airshows, and just forget the Comanche, it wasn't used really ..

Not yet matey... Best wait a bit.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

After reading Ed Macy's book, I am not sure there is a practical way to model the avionics properly with a computer display.

It would be the A model NOT THE D.

Guess you could plan on this, long after the dust from our bones are gone.

 You are probably correct, ED has so much on their plate.

"The art of simulation design is about understanding limited fidelity...

...compromises must be made. Designers have to consider cost vs. fidelity and processor time vs. fidelity. Additional trade-offs must be made between graphics, AI, flight models, number of units and more...

...never ask the pilot what he wants to learn because he too will end up building an airplane. Instead, ask the pilot what he needs to learn."

Oh yeah, forgot that detail. :D

Why not the Longbow? It has radar, sensor fusion, ability to call artillery, all that cool stuff. Also, cichildfan, what do you mean by not being able to model the avionics on a comp screen? I think it would work fine, just some AI stuff that could be the issue. However, all that cursor stuff with the TEDAC in the front seat might be a bit odd, but the pilot's spot would work out fine.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the IHADSS when he says "avionics". Also, ED has made clear the level of detail that they require, and the necessary details for the AH-64D are still not approved for unlimited distribution (i.e. it's classified).

And of course any helicopter can call artillery... What I'd be interested in seeing is how a sim could incorporate level IV UAS control.

I would think the way to do IHADSS would be to superimpose a semitransparent layer on top of the main viewport.

Maybe give a keystroke/ button enabling the player to switch which "eye" he's focusing on, thereby making the IHADSS overlay more or less transparent (and the main viewport correspondingly less or more visible)

Well the symbology is focused to infinity, so no real need for a separate focus there. The real issue is when you have more than symbology on the IHADSS, such as PNVS or TADS FLIR video. Then it gets a little more difficult, because in real life, one eye does not see the FLIR video, and the other eye does not see the cockpit. Even harder, and I can't imagine (yet) that anyone would ever even bother to simulate it, but the FLIR video is from the viewpoint of the sensor, not the pilot's eye... The ultimate effect being that one eye is in the cockpit and can see the cockpit interior, and the other eye is on the nose of the aircraft, and can see the FLIR video (with superimposed symbology, of course). This is what typically causes headaches (literally) for Apache pilots..."switching eyes" to see either the FLIR video and outside, or the cockpit inside. For this reason (and a few others) AH-64 pilots are no longer allowed to both use IAHDS and FLIR at the same time. If one pilot is flying by FLIR, the other must be using NVG's, not FLIR. Typically, the pilot in back will use the IAHDSS with FLIR video, while the copilot/gunner in front will use NVG's and just flip them up for engagements using the cockpit displays.

Combat Helo looked at showing the FLIR mounted on the nose but they found it was causing headaches so they dropped it.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

I would love to see either the apache or ( I would prefer ) the hind but I cant see ED doing them because of the twin seat cockpits and the AI involved for a gunner, so if there is going to be another helicopter it will be a single seater, Personal choice is the Wildcat that would allow both the Jtac style missions and a bit of the old tank hunting
