Johnny Dioxin Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I've been watching and reading this thread for some time (as have many, I would think) and it's becoming clearer to me that, not only is it going to still be a sizeable investment for people on low incomes (i.e. pensioners/disabled etc) for the VR headset itself, but it will require a completely new rig - not just a new rig, but one with top-level kit in it, which would cost far more than the actual VR headset itself. Yes - I do build my own - always have, but nevertheless, it will cost a good $1,500 here in the UK for a PC of that level, with the required graphics card. So I am tending towards the EyeX instead. Watched a demo by Devildog Gamer on YT and it certainly looks like a viable alternative. I could sell my TrackIR to help pay for it, too. Might be the better option, anyway, with the doubts I have over VR and and the way my illness affect my eyes (and vice-versa). I was prepared to order a Rift or Vive and thoroughly test it in the 30 days I have, before returning if necessary - but I just can't justify the extra expense of the PC upgrade, even if my credit card wasn't nearly maxed. Rig: Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS; Ryzen 7800X3D ; 64GB DDR5 5600; RTX 4080; VPC T50 CM2 HOTAS; Pimax Crystal Light I'm learning to fly - but I ain't got wings With my head in VR - it's the next best thing!
louisv Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Less than an hour to go...for the 2016 CES to open and pre-ordering of the Rift to start.:geek: MSI Z170A Titanium Edition mobo + 6700K CPU 32 GB G.Skill TridentZ memory 3200 MHz Sandisk Extreme Pro 256 GB SSD Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB M.2 SSD (3 GB/s) for DCS and +. _Acoustic_ Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Still can't decide... I just saw that they won't charge you until the rift actually ships and will give you the hand things for free once they release them. Hmmmmm
Mt5_Roie Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Yeah will decide based on price. But looking forward to it. 36 minutes to go! Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
_Acoustic_ Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Will a GTX 980 be enough for this to make DCS World run in high settings? (8x MSAA, high shadows, etc) Their recommended card is the 970 or equivalent so you do meet those but not sure about high, only time will tell. Plus I think reviews will differ a ton depending on peoples FPS needs and resolution needs. I for one am fine with FPS around 35... maybe I'm used to it after all these years but for people who need 60+ all the time, probably will have to put setting down. The other thing is resolution, I've always played on 1080 TVs or cheaper monitors so the resolution of the rift isn't a huge deal for me but if I was coming from 4k or something I could see that as being a real downer. Anyways, point being is you do meet the recommended specs but I think things will vary greatly because people are used their specific set ups which differ greatly.

tintifaxl Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 So much for "selling it cheap because they don't need the money" baloney. If my computer can't run it, its going to be a tiny market share for this niche product. My guess is, you're short on usb 3 ports. ;) Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.
Markeebo Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 (edited) Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion CRIKEY!!!!! I've been hitting the agree and complete order button since 7 mins after it opened and it keeps crashing. 17 mins now. Hope I haven't bought 500 CV1. LOL EDIT: Order Complete. Took 32 mins of trying but it finally went through. Sad to see that the release date touted for Q1-2016 has slipped to Q2 after all this time. But I guess we are the ones in the drivers seat. _Acoustic_ Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Yeah it is pricey, but I guess it is bundled with 2 games and you get the touch for free when its released. Plus it is the first conceivable VR consumer product, should be worth some money in 20 years as a collectable as well. Scratches head, strokes chin thoughtfully.
