What a clever device! It seems to eliminate the need of eye tracking.

Clever indeed.

I'm quite interested how those tech improvements will find their way into the production devices (eye tracking, hand tracking, lens / screen advanced features).

I think eye tracking is still needed for gameplay purpose (so the NPCs can react to where you're looking).

Which Oculus Runtime version was used to integrate Rift?

Hi - As some may know, the Oculus folks are going to release a new Runtime version soon (0.7). Unless the DCS devs used Runtime version 0.6* and above to integrate the Rift, DCS won't work for people who've installed the new Runtime version.

So in order to decide if I want to install 0.7, I'd like to know which Runtime version the DCS devs used to integrate the Rift, because I doubt I'll want to install the new Runtime if DCS won't work with it.

*I'm not certain about that number; it might be an earlier version. Regardless, I'd still need to know which Runtime version DCS used.

Thanks...

I am running the 0.6.0.1 runtimes with DCS in Extended without trouble. That's as far as you'll go if you want to keep Extended.

I'm also running the 0.6.01 Runtime with DCS in Extended Mode without trouble, so I'm unsure of what you mean.

Runtime 0.7 will no longer have extended mode. Only Direct Mode will be available, but I think it's supposed to be an improved Direct Mode with better performance than anything they've had prior to Runtime 0.7.

But for the current version of DCS, it won't work with 0.7 if its Rift integration was built using a Runtime earlier than 0.6. If it was built with a Runtime earlier than 0.6 (Wow, I should have said 'Runtime 0.6 or later' instead of what I now have underlined. So sorry.), then I would be able to upgrade my Runtime to 0.7 and still be able to run DCS in Oculus Mode, as long as DCS has the capability of running in Direct Mode. Does it? I haven't checked for that in a while. Guess I better get busy... :smilewink:

No direct mode here. It's highly likely that DCS is using a pre 6 runtime (my assumption) seeing as it has had oculus support for some time, well before v6.

Only ED can answer this question of what version are they using? There's a lot of "things are happening in the future business", but that's not enough to have a grip on what will happen when folks go to v7.

Are they pretty good about monitoring these forums and answering questions? Would it be better for me to contact them rather than relying on them to find my question and answer it?

Was a statement released in a Q&A. Could watch them if you haven't already.

Intel i9-9900K 32GB DDR4, RTX 2080tiftw3, Windows 10, 1tb 970 M2, TM Warthog, 4k 144hz HDR g-sync.

Sorry, but I don't know what a Q&A is. I mean, generally speaking, I know what it is, but it sounds like you're referring to something specific. Could you tell me a little about it, please?

Kasper,

This is possible even today because Leap can handle course movements. Notice the levers in the video are pretty big. So pressing down on flaps or virtual throttle works today if you want 0. 25. 50. 75. or 100%. Again course movements. But you can't use it (yet) to discern fine motion. You wont be able to move the throttle just a little bit. And you certainly wont be able to hit the MFD buttons.

It appears to me that Oculus is now attempting to dream up new applications for VR use in order to create mass appea instead of really focusing on the obvious one right in front of their faces. Gaming is the perfect genre for VR and it seems that Oculus has top-down pressure from their corporate governors looking at only the bottom line.

Of course they understand that gaming is an important area of concentration but the way they see their "big picture" is that VR is more like a TV and that's really misguided.

Oculus and Vive fully understand that gaming is the first step, as public enthusiasts are the only ones that have the hardware, or willing to spend the money on the hardware to run early consumer version VR HMD's effectively. Its also a relatively cheap investment for most businesses as the tech and software evolves to better serve them.

Its hard to believe that Cameron can't see the difference between watching 3D on a TV, and being transported inside the TV into the world of Virtual Reality. You'll never get presence watching a TV screen no matter how good the 3D effect is. Comparing 3D TV and Virtual Reality is quite frankly a ridiculous comparison. My guess is that Cameron is wrong, and Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony, etc etc are investing billions for good reason.

Oculus has more than one product. Yes they work on the Rift and it's peripherals but one of the smartest guys in their team (JC) works exclusively on GearVR.

GearVR will reach for applications that are less gamelike and because it has extra resolution over the Rift and is untethered it will make for a very compelling platform for watching media of all kinds.

I'm sure the lessons learned by Carmack will serve Oculus well when technology improvements allow for future consumer Rifts to run untethered. Carmack is definitely one of the smartest VR people Oculus has hired, but I'm sure Abrash, and quite a few others of the hundreds of new hires they've made are no slouches either.

Will 1.5 have the new Oculus Rift support? Direct Mode?

I believe it's been answered in one of the last few Q/A Videos.

running 0.6.0.0 runtime, desktop is extended, rift is secondary monitor.

For people who are unsure how you might bring physical cockpit controls into VR - this is how you bring something into VR.

Pro tip :idiot: You put a tracking dongle on it.

Which Q&A? What was the answer? Seems like if Direct Mode needs DirectX 10/11 then it should work with DCS 1.5 that uses that. Hoping for a good Sept!

I'm getting my DK2 on Tuesday and looking forward to testing it out. For DCS I'm hoping to go from using four monitors to one+rift.

I know the CV1 is around the but I do development on apps and figured it would be great to play with. Plus my kids are going to freak at playing minecraft with the rift.

I have checked the Q&A in the videos and it doesn't mention if Direct to Rift will be in 1.5. All it talks about is 2.0 and Rift support. I know the maps won't be included with 1.5, but I'd like to know if Direct to Rift is included 1.5.

Well the new 0.7 SDK is due out this week, it will be the first to integrate GPU drivers in to the API, and get rid of extended mode. I hope there will be enough time for them to add the SDK features between release of 0.7 and 1.5.

Can someone ask in the Q&A about support?

As a side note I'm going to be legitimately pissed if my AMD card still can't run it...

Has anyone tried that flyinside FSX? I know you have Derek, from another forum.

That is the best flight sim experience I have had in the rift. Not because of planes, flight model etc but because it is smooth, no judder. That timewarp really makes a huge difference and I hope DCS make sure this is implemented.

It is very good seeing the framerate a good deal under the 75 frames yet everything is silky smooth.

If DCS 1.5 Beta doesn't launch with Directmode DK2 Rift support then I'll actually install the copy of FSX Steam Edition that I bought.

I have not had FSX on for a long time, it's a pita to get going. I had a disk version so multiple disks, then orbx, then rex. ARGH! it just got tiresome.

When fsx:se was on for a few bucks I thought I may as well get it for when I might want to install it, better than 4 dvd's and activation etc.

I only just loaded it because of the rift support and since trying that I have been busy adding on scenery, it's a seriously nice implementation and it's only alpha. I will be keeping it on even is DCS up's it's game as it has brought some of the challenges of civ flying back to life, e.g. small strips, bush etc.
