I'm more annoyed at the fact that their server farm utterly failed in every possible way to handle any load at all than I am about the price point! Could be because I install and manage load testing servers at work. I have to wait another month to get mine because of that!

For those people who will need a VR capable computer system, might want to check out the Rift preorder pages next month or even sooner.

Oculus will be bundling the Rift with various levels of VR ready PC's, that at first blush appear to have substantial savings. Its rumoured the prices will start at the 950 level which sounds way to cheap if it includes the Rift. I've always built my systems, as its so much cheaper, but If I needed a new computer I would certainly check it out.

Another reddit post to take with a grain of salt.

CES thoughts (self.oculus)

submitted 2 hours ago * by donkeygravy

Just my 2 cents. Thats all.

First off - Wow is this light. Seriously light. Could have worn it for hours no problem light. Second - I could not notice any screendoor effect. The weight and displays are drastically better than DK2. I could manage maybe 45min tops in my DK2 and 15 in DK1. I could wear CV1 all day. As for crescent bay - No clue. Never tried it.

Motion tracking was crisp. I would get to the point of puking in DK1 really fast and DK2 less so. CV1? Nada. They nailed it.

Display quality was phenomenal. Colors seemed to be as good or better than my Panasonic TX-P60ZT65B. I will be using my CV1 to watch movies. My plasma is going to be doing NFL detail in 2016.

Would I pay $600 for it? Yup. I would be ok with 800$ honestly. I own a couple of High end gaming monitors which cost more and do less. Sure the price made me wince but I bought one and had my wife order a second one for her. I guess I had my expectations calibrated poorly. Palmer owned up. Good enough for me.

This backlash about the price reminds me of the facebook hissy fit. Oculus had to get this right out of the gate. It looks like they did baring any major complications with component sourcing. I was promised affordable consumer VR and that's what I got. This thing is a showpiece. Friends come over and I will be shoving it at them. Until this CES I was very skeptical about Oculus being able to get it right out of the gate at any price. HTC and others have a VERY high bar to cross and getting over it at a cheaper price wont happen for a while. Oculus did everyone in the community a huge favor by setting this baseline. CV1 is the reference point now. Everything will be contrasted against it and consumers win in the long run. Palmer delivered big time. VR is here.

I had a chance to demo the engineering sample of CV1 back during E3 with Nvidia behind closed doors. All I can say is that it left me speechless… way beyond anything we get with DK2. $599 Is a small price to pay for what you will be experiencing.

That could force tham to lower the price as well or they will start to claim copy rights on VR similar like Natural Point.

not reeally, the latency from streaming to your phone is up there.

Those articles might have been more compelling if the authors had avoided an air of "I can't afford it, therefore it's too expensive".

Regardless of whether they're proven correct, I thought it came across as a case of sour grapes.

The truth of the matter regarding cost is we simply don't know if was set right or not, only time will tell.

It's a good time to be alive now gents with this kind of tech on the horizon for us DCS fans. Looking so forward to April and still cursing their IT staff for a crappy pre-order rollout. First world problems though :)

For me it's a matter of justifying the cost when there are other things that take a higher financial priority. The current pricing simply does not win me over and it appears there is a majority that feels the same. Perhaps if I had been born with a silver spoon then this might not be an issue.

It's cutting edge technology, it is going to be expensive. Gonna be a few years before it is priced for the masses... and until mainstream computers have the horsepower to run them.

Some would say that having a, oh, I don't know, a nice Mustang GT would be considered having a silver spoon in one's mouth. :D

I would agree that it's a matter of priority. And like others said, the price will come down. Anyone care to guess what a 40" Plasma TV cost 10 years ago???

What was your expected ship date? May?

I have to admit, the reviews seem positive. Can't wait.

Really it isn't expensive at all for what you are getting. The reason why it seems so, and I was taken back when I saw the price and hesitated pre-ordering it for a little bit is because they wrongly talked about pricing way before they should have.

This wouldn't be an issue at all if they had said it will be around $500-600 or didn't quote a price at all.

I wasn't born with any type of spoon in my mouth and don't regret pre-ordering. My wife and I will just go out to eat three times less per month and I'll cut out a few 12 packs a month and it will pay for itself in a few months.

The rift itself isn't really all that much for what you are getting, it just seems that way since we were expecting lower. There is a difference.

And most of us are early adopters, I'm sure. From SSDs to 980's and above, to Skylake etc. It's a never ending journey, which I for one am happy to be on.

Oculus founder apologizes for how Rift pricing was handled

Palmer Luckey admits he should've done a better job at setting expectations.

t's fair to say that quite a few people are disappointed with the price of the Oculus Rift -- just read the comments on our article announcing that pre-orders had gone live.

http://www.engadget.com/2016/01/07/oculus-apology-rift-price-messaging/

I didn't read the entire quote. But what I do like is that the quote ends with

" ...I apologize." And *not* "if anyone is upset, I apologize." *not* "if I offended anyone, I apologize"

It's a pet peeve of mine. If you are apologizing, do it categorically. Don't put qualifiers like "if I offended anyone..."

The other Wired article is spot on as well. This can't be a science project. We need VR to succeed, because after having used DK1, then DK2, I *cannot*, *will not* go back to 3 monitor setup.
