Already a couple days old: UFO disrupted air traffic at Bremen (northern Germany) airport in the evening hours of January 6th.

So far, there seem to be no photos or videos. Witness reports (including ATC from Bremen Tower) vary wildly. Some say, the object wasn't lit, others say it had red and green formation lights. The object seems to have flown like a helicopter but sounded like a jet.

Also, according to some reports, the object was seen on radar, other reports specifically say the object could not be seen on radar.

A police helicopter was sent to investigate but could not find said object.

Two flights headed for Bremen were diverted, one or two flights were canceled, and another was delayed. Police are investigating the matter. "Dangerous interference with air traffic" is a criminal offense punishable with up to 4 years in prison. But I guess ET won't care if it was actually extra terrestrial. :D

Long range rescue to ship wreck survivors conducted by air:

1537761_358079047665259_1433567470_o.jpg

The aircraft was a PoAF P-3 Cup +. Survival kits were droped to survivors and their position marked for another ship to pick them up.

The graph really puts the aircrafts autonomy into perspective.

In the article it is mentioned, that the lucky pilots only had minor injuries and don't even have to go to the hospital.

I always thought, if a pilot ejected, they would always get a medical checkup? Alone because of the possibility of back injuries? Or are modern ejection seats that safe nowadays?

Follow-up to UFO sighting at Bremen airport on January 6th.

(Border) Science blog grenzwissenschaft-aktuell.de collected all available information a few days after the sighting. (German only).

On January 21st, Bremen police and federal prosecutor issued a preliminary report, published by grenzwissenschaft-aktuell.de.

My translation of the report:

At 6:30pm on January 6th, 2014, air traffic control at Bremen airport sighted an unidentified flying object in the airspace above Bremen. Several citizens as well as police officers also gave hints regarding this object.

Because of the incident, an extensive investigation relating to dangerous interference with air traffic was launched.

After assessing more than 50 hints and interviewing numerous witnesses, Bremen federal prosecutor and investigators of Bremen police criminal investigation department now issue the following evaluation:

The still unknown operator of the unidentified flying object likely comes from either the model aircraft community or the multicopter community. Reports from observers and experts point to this conclusion.

Some citizens are likely to have observed and described the police helicopter on duty that night.

Sources from the west side of Bremen are likely to have witnessed an Air France aircraft flying a holding pattern over Bremen at the time of the sighting. An analysis of Geo-data points to this conclusion.

The investigator's preliminary assessment is that the Copter or device from the model aircraft community has likely been piloted by a professional hobby-model-aircraft pilot at a desk or at the greenfield.

According to concurrent expert's assessment, descriptions regarding the object's lighting and altitude are hardly usable. Observations of an object's size and distance are very difficult in the night sky.

Targeted investigations towards suspects from the previously described community did not lead to concrete investigation results.

The federal prosecutor and police specifically warn against illegal usage of such flying objects. Such flights have to be declared and require authorization of the aviation authority.

As has been shown by the case at hand, air traffic over Bremen has been disrupted.

The final approach of a commercial aircraft had to be aborted and another flight had to be redirected. There was no imminent threat to life or physical condition of humans. In case of violation, criminal proceedings and high claims for damages are to be expected.

Note: I'm sure my translation didn't do the text any good, but it was the most terrible form of bureaucratic German to begin with...

Most specifically, it does contain the term "professional hobby-model-aircraft-pilot".

Two separate lightning strikes into Finnish Air Force Pilatus PC-12's cost over 1 million euros to repair

http://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/a1392003069586?jako=cabeb8636f480287f13454b500413f65&ref=tw-share

The news site is in Finnish so I'll summarize:

"Two Finnish Air Force Pilatus PC-12 aircraft were struck by lightning on two separate occasions in 2011 and 2013. There were no malfunctions caused by the strikes. The lightnings struck the aircraft's propellers and exited from the rear fuselage. There was lot's of damage throughout the fuselage but the biggest cost was caused by the need to demagnetize the engine. The aircraft had to be transported to Switzerland by road."
