Spirit X Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 So I'm saving up to invest in a HOTAS Warthog around April (very excited!) and I've been looking around for a good set of pedals to go with it. After finding a couple of old threads, doing some googling and being disappointed to discover that SIMPED are not longer trading, the ones I like the look of at the moment are the Saitek Pro pedals. However, when I read a review of for the HOTAS Warthog it said that if you have Thrustmaster pedals, they will kinda combine with the HOTAS so that games will see the whole set as one complete virtual controller. I was wondering if this a particularly important issue that should lead me to lean towards Thrustmaster? Any recommendations (or stay away warnings) from experienced users would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the UK and, given the choice, I'd like a set with toe brakes. Budget for the pedals is around the £100 mark (about $120 atm I guess). Thanks.
Hamblue Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 (edited) I have and like the Saitek combat pedals. I had the pro's once and they were also very good. The thing I liked about those is you can rest your feet on them without activating them. http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/compedals.html Edited January 19, 2013 by Hamblue Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. tintifaxl Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I recommend the Saitek Combat pedals, too. Regarding the Thrustmaster ones, they are gameport versions and you could plug them directly into the old Thrustmaster Cougar and here you had only one device seen by the sim, but not so for the Warthog. wmilosh Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Used the CH pedals for years and used to love them until I got the Saitek Combat pedals. Now my CH pedals are gathering dust in the closet.
FatSlapper Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 If You can afford it stay far far away from Saitek, cheesy plastic toys which frequently ship with hardware bugs and piss poor tech support when You need a repair. I could save You some time money and trouble and sell You any number of pieces of Saitek hardware each with its own hardware bug or non-functioning .65cent Chinese switch, and You wont be mad that You wasted Your money on "New" junk. Check out CHproducts FAR superior to Fisher-Price-oops-I mean Saitek, its not perfect but the tech support is excellent in the rare event you may need it. The pedals are about the same price or cheaper than Saitek. Hmm almost forgot...their software and drivers can be quite buggy and are VERY VERY slow on updates. I own 8 different pieces of Saitek hardware and have abandon them all and spent more money on other brands to replace them I wish someone would have been open and honest and warned Me. I guess they are OK for entry level / light use but they they just don't stand up to hardcore simmin, I have used My controllers daily for ten years. Good luck with Your money!

That may be your experience :) Sad to hear. I have to say though: I haven't had to use Saitek's support so you may be correct here, but I've owned several pieces of saitek gear (currently actively using 3, among which the combat pedals) and I'm very satisfied with each, no flaws at all. Irregular programming Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I have owned my CH-pro pedals for almost 10 years and they are still going strong. I can fully recommend them.
Bahger Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) I swear by CH products, too, but because I do a lot of sim racing, I have a G27 wheel and pedal set installed. I'm happy to report that DCS recognizes these pedals, and, as long as "Report Combined Pedals" is checked in the Logitech Profiler, they work very well in all DCS flight sim products. Yurgon Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Simpeds F-16/C here, totally love them, these things are awesome! I actually tried to get an additional set with USB as soon as I heard DHS was going out of business, but they never answered. :( Before that, Saitek Pro Flight Rudders. They were quite okay, but I was never really a fan (there was a reason I went for the Simpeds). Can't say anything about CH, never had anything from them, but general perception seems to be very good IMO.
Eihort Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I have the CH Pedals, and the CH Throttle quad for FSX. The CH Pedals have had both toe-brake pots go out of alignment and need to be replaced. The Throttle quad has had one pot completely die, and replacing it will be a downright pain in the ass requiring de-soldering of all the pots on the board to even see how hard they'll be to replace. I've had three gens of Saitek's HOTAS sticks. No problems on any of them.
Blaze Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) CH Pro USB Pedals since 2001, still going strong. Will be upgrading to Saitek Combat Pedals soon though, retiring the CH ones. mr_mojo97 Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Saitek combats here too. Nice and wide, good foot rests. Only problem i've had is the tension adjustment doesn't seem to work anymore - anyone else had this problem? Had Ch pros for prob 5-6 years and did me well, although eventually the toe brake wires seemed to get caught in the pedals sliding mechanism. I also found them too narrowly spaced for flight sims. I was also gonna get some simpeds but alas now out of business. Faelwolf Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I had the CH pro pedals for about 8 years, and other than the narrow stance, was quite happy with them until they started drifting sharply to the right all the time. I replaced them with a set of Saitek Combat pros and have been quite happy with them, especially the wider footprint (I'm a large guy and found the narrow width of the CH to be rather tiring on long flights). CH used to be top of the line, but their quality control has taken a dive, so now it's hit or miss if you will get a good unit. Some units work perfectly, others have so much slop in the fit to the pot shaft that you can't even return to center. I have heard a number of complaints about the drift problem I had with the pro pedals happening right out of the box as well. l got no response from customer service on a bad stick they sold me, (no answer to e-mail, and never answered the phone even a single time) and finally had to find a website that showed how to fix it myself. The fact that the website exists at all I took as a bad sign - is CH really shipping that many bad sticks? I have had no problems with any Saitek gear I've had, especially their X series joysticks. Of course, that didn't stop me from upgrading to the Warthog :) Internally, from what I have read, there is no real difference between the Combat and Combat Pro rudder pedals from Saitek. I went with the pro to have the metal foot rests, and if you are patient and look around, you can get them for the same price as the non-pro pedals if you prefer the different setup. I'd have liked for TM to have made a good set of pedals to go with the WH stick, but I am told there are no plans in the works to do that.
[DBS]TH0R Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 ... doing some googling and being disappointed to discover that SIMPED are not longer trading, the ones I like the look of at the moment are the Saitek Pro pedals. Horrible news, those are the best pedals one could buy. I hope they come back in the future. Saitek Combat Pedals are however, a very good choice. In particular since you can adjust the angle of pedals for more convenient desktop use. luza Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Have the Saitek combat pedals. However I have an issue with my toebrake axis sometimes remaining engaged even when I release it. (Doesn't show in windows only DCS) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Luzifer Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I have that problem with the Saitek combat pedals too. It does show in Windows, not just in DCS. It happens when you release the brakes fast. Wiggling a bit makes it update again. It is some sort of weird Windows driver problem.
