DieHard Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Trying to get this thread back on track. What will you guys do first with the F/A-18C? I will most definitely do carrier ops online non-stop. I am also hoping that Thrustmaster releases a F/A-18C or F-15C joystick attachment. That would be amazing! Join with Moa and JAR, their new and improved VNAO. Hope Pop joins in. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DieHard Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 I have purchased and watched Jetstream many times. Great series. Their training and accomplishments are quite impressive until you stop to consider missing vital aspect that USN aviators must deal with: the final hurdle in USN Hornet training is the Boat. And the boat can still cut you from the program. I suspect a couple of the Canadian Forces pilots who squeaked through the program may yet have been DQ'd at the Boat. Not this series, but on "The Military Channel" , a carrier-life documentary, an experienced pilot was eventually disqualified on the boat because he failed to be able to do in-air refueling. He failed at it multiple times. He was reassigned to the flight deck bridge. This guy was no young kid. When I was doing the FSX friendly, VRS Superbug, there is a nice T-45 mod for FSX, an Italy modder source, that in real life, the real T-45 is used to initially train Navy pilots for carrier traps before ever training with the Hornet. That mod makes doing traps a lot easier to get a feel for it in FSX. VNAO's X-Man is a real, current, Hornet pilot. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DieHard Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 What would you say is more difficult initially.. Air-Air refueling or landing on a carrier? Landing on a carrier at night, bad weather, zero visibility to the deck would be tough. Having just completed a combat mission, you are dead tired, then having to land in foul weather. Flamin_Squirrel Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 After watching "Speed and Angels", it appeared that the pilots went straight to carrier training on their combat aircraft (in the case of the film, the F-14) without practicing in the T-45 first. Do only some train on the T-45?
Flamin_Squirrel Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 No, all do. Many thanks. Has that always (well, last 10-15 years) been the case?
aaron886 Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Yes. Megan and Jay both went through API just like every other naval aviator. That movie covered their time with a RAG
Scoggs Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Not that anyone would know, but what would the chances of have TM release a hornet stick? Revelation Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Is there really that much difference to warrant a purchase (or manufacturing by TM) if you already have the Warthog? Really, you would only need a new throttle to be "accurate." I agree though that the TM Warthog is close enough. Win 10 Pro 64Bit | 49" UWHD AOC 5120x1440p | AMD 5900x | 64Gb DDR4 | RX 6900XT
Metro Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Hey guys. Just recently started a Hornet pit building site in anticipation of DCS Hornet. We started les than 2 weeks ago. Not a whole lot of participation as of yet being a new site but what we've gotten so far has been really good. Please come over and visit whether you are building a pit or just discussing the details of doing it. Need some expertise in all areas other than pit building (I.e., computers, software are any other fun thing. So stop by. Metro http://hornetpits.org/index.php

The Stick is different style on the f-18 http://aerotronicsllc.com/images/F18FLCS4.jpg http://aerotronicsllc.com/images/F18FLCS2.jpg Not sure I'd want to spend a couple hundred for it but some might. TM would have to take sales into consideration so who knows.

Same goes for the F-15 of course, especially because the A-10C's right throttle is the same as the throttle in the F-15C. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Welll that was their plan when they made the Cougar, that the stick could be replaced, but they made a completely new hotas anyways. But after seeing what a fail the TMC was I don't blame them for starting over. At least they did it right the second time. I guess we'll see.

Sierra99 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Really, you would only need a new throttle to be "accurate." I agree though that the TM Warthog is close enough. Actually, both the Stick and Throttle are different enough to warrant new products from someone... Be it TM or someone else. But the hard work is done. The base of the stick is will work for whatever the want to throw at it. All they need to do is create new grip. The throttles are complete. They can need redesign the base to match the F-18... I'm not sure how different the C model controls are from the E/F models...
