hareball Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Hi all, I'm just curious about the cannon on both of these aircraft (Ka50 and A10), and I don't really know much about autocannons... are these effectively the same gun, but with a higher fire rate on the A10? What factors are taken into account for gun effectiveness? Also, another question, is there any aircraft that mounts a higher calibre autocannon larger than 30mm ? Thanks, Hareball
Wichid Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 The A-10 has much higher velocity and rate of fire as you say. They are the same calibre but totally different. The Spectre gunship has a 40mm autocannon (and a 105mm howitzer). Lyndiman AMD Ryzen 3600 / RTX 2070 Super / 32G Ram / Win10 / TrackIR 5 Pro / Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & MFG Crosswind Rudder Pedals
dave4002000 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Like Wichid said, same caliber but totally different weapon system. The A-10's GAU-8 isn't an autocannon. It's a Gatling gun with multiple, rotating barrels. The autocannon is more along the style of conventional automatic rifles(but fires shells instead of cartridge bullets) and uses a single fixed barrel. USAF Bomber Avionics Specialist, Ret. sobek Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) While using the same caliber, the cartridge used by these cannons differ greatly. The GAU-8 uses the 30x173mm round. The 2A42 uses 30x165mm. The difference in muzzle velocity and terminal energy is significantly different. Edited April 19, 2013 by sobek Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Dr_Arrow Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I find Ka-50 cannon fantastic. Lot of ammo, it tracks targets automatically - just put it in the big square box, press trigger and from 2km the target is dead. Vikhr+cannon combo works flawlessly :)
Tizid Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 GAU-8 is like seven 2A42. Oh, and sound is more evil :D Please excuse my bad english.

hareball Posted April 19, 2013 Author Posted April 19, 2013 cool thanks for the info.. I've got some reading to do.
Yellonet Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 Hmm, interesting. GAU-8: 38 mm penetration @ 1000 m 2A42: 55 mm penetration @ 1000 m i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
dave4002000 Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) The 55mm penetration is for the AP sabot round. Penetration for the normal AP-T round carried in the KA-50 is around 18-25mm @ 1000m. Yurgon Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 are these effectively the same gun, but with a higher fire rate on the A10? I don't think the GAU would quite fit anywhere on the Black Shark...
Boberro Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Exactly. GheyTen's cannon is enormous. This is just big bertha! Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
RvETito Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 AFAIK the A-10's cannon is not just a weapon but a major structural component of the fuselage. "See, to me that's a stupid instrument. It tells what your angle of attack is. If you don't know you shouldn't be flying." - Chuck Yeager, from the back seat of F-15D at age 89. =RvE=

Rusty_M Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I've got to admit, as distinctive as the GAU8's "bvvvrrrrrrtttt" is, I still find the "thump thump thump" of the Shark's gun to be very satisfying. It sounds more dangerous in low ROF IMO. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
Kaktus29 Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 yeah, i love the shark's "thump thump thump" sound..it sounds more metalic..like clubbing your victim with an iron bar.. while A-10 sounds like "taking an iron dump" on your enemy.. both are terrifying to the victim of course.. but i like the sharks sound better.. also, does anybody know when do choppers use those useless rockets? ..i mean, they are soo, useless.. why have them.. wouldn't it be better to be armed with gun-pods instead.. or is it impossible to put instead a smaller vikhr design in those pylons instead?.. and are rockets on choppers more of a armour piercing kind or the cluster soft skin kill type?..

Griffin Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I wish we had flechette rockets. Sometimes it's very hard to kill infantry with area weapons and GAU-8 I've heard(?). Saturate an area with a flechette salvo and job well done!
