EVENT: A10 Training from a real A10 Crew Chief

TOPIC: All about the DCS A10

TIME: Saturday(First Session), May 18th, Starting at 7pm PT (0200 GMT)

LOCATION: ts3.digitalthemepark.com (TeamSpeak 3)

Greetings Aviators,

From the perspective of US Armed Forces, walk through the various systems, best setup & config, checklists and procedures as we all "sit" in the cockpit and run through an actual flight. Make sure to set aside several hours for this instruction. Several training sessions/days will occur to learn the systems.

This series of events is not one you will want to miss. We shall see you there on TeamSpeak at ts3.digitalthemepark.com

Outcome: Fantastic intro to the A10. Incredible knowledge that this crew chief shared tonight. Many thanks to him for spending his time he took to share his knowledge with us. As this was a success, he is willing to clear his schedule to continue these courses. We are looking at the same time in two weeks. I will post the exact details 24 hours before the event.

Also, meet some very fun folks with inquisitive minds. Thank you for attending.

I am really excited for this meeting and hope that my non-native english will do its job for this great opportunity.

Thank you Zoolander64 for this information.

Just a quick question because I'm kind of confused here... A crew chief does maintenance right? He doesn't actually use the systems, he just knows how they work, correct?

My question is, how and what do you know about actual procedures?

The pilot is only flying the plane (just kidding...;)) - the crew chief is the guy who really knows every bit and piece of that thing ;)

The crew chief is not a simple technician with a wrench in his hand...

Nah, the crew chief just makes sure there is gas in the tanks and air in the tires. The avionics guys are the ones who know everything. ;)

The above is light-hearted humor. Please do not take it seriously and get all bent out of shape.

As an A-10 crew chief you're about right on the crew chief with a wrench in his hand. We also have the luxury of being “glorified: service attendants putting gas on the jet, servicing LOX, engine oil, APU oil etc. :D

When it comes to avionics you're right, Specs work and fix actual systems, crew chiefs. Well we just break them during a defuel because we're bored in the pit and just flip switches. LOL

What I want people to understand is that a crew chief, if he can read, will know the basics of a system but we are NOT experts on a system because we don't' use them day in and day out.

@Zoolander64...

How about a little history, how long have you been an A-10 crew chief, what units have you been assigned to, did you work A models?

Me, I've worked A-10s for going on 7 years now, 4 back in the 90s on A models, active duty, and the last 3 years on C models. I was stationed at Moody AFB (70th FS) and Osan AB (25th FS) in the 90s. Now I'm in the 476th MXS, part of the 476th FG which is a TFI unit working hand in hand with the 23rd FG at Moody.

Thanks Paul, this was exactly what I meant earlier when I asked the question about what a crew chief actually knows about procedures.

While it's nice to have someone explain all the basics of the systems, it would be awesome if a real A10C pilot would tell us a little bit about how to actually USE the systems.

And all I can do (or any crew chief) is relay what pilots tell us and people can either believe or not believe.

We have a tradition in the 476th FG that Saturdays and Sundays after drill is done go over to ops and have a few beers with our pilots. That is interesting and get some good info from time to time.

If ED were to record this entire lesson as a video and add it to the Training for the A10C, that'd be awesome.

Better yet, record the audio, chop it up and make an interactive training mission :)
