westr Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 (edited) In that case you are misinformed, the Griffon engine Spitfire didn't require a huge change. The biggest change came on the VIII (test pilot Quill thought it was best Merlin) the VIII is what the XIV was based on. After the VIII it was only changes to the rudder and then the introduction of cut down fuselage in late 1944/5 on both XVI and XIV. After that the really big change came with the redesign of the wing and rudder on the mk22 or 25. So your point regarding the wing changes came to a Griffon engined variant. Mk 25 and you're going onto something different entirely, I believe there was a kit build with that designation. otto Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 (edited) About the 109 vs Spitfire fight. You don't need a team to defeat a 109.It's verry possible to win 1 to 1 fights by using energy traps. That's by fooling the enemy pilot flying above in the energy fighter with a gentile turn that gets tighter and tighter as it gets near and tries to get a shooting angle. So if you succeed than he bleeds tons of energy this way and becomes very vulnerable. Than of course who ever can deduce the enemy energy state, or who ever shoots better wins. It's the classic angles fighter vs energy fighter. There is no predefined winner here. I see you miss the point entirely, the major change on the Spitfire was on the Spitfire VII/VIII which had a strengthened fuselage which was eventually used as the basis for Griffon engined Spitfires which was a relatively small change to in fact! Cripple Posted November 8, 2016 Posted November 8, 2016 Does the Spitfire have any form of radio navigation? Yes, up to a point. There's a switch plate for the beam approach equipment (although no switch....) visible in one of the leaked cockpit shots - starboard side, immediately for'ard of the wobble pump. I believe it was for a Lorenz-style aural dit-dah blind approach. There was also "Darkie", where a pilot could be talked down to the nearest airbase on an emergency channel. Pretty much as NeilWillis put it... :P My *new* AV-8B sim-pit build thread: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3901589 The old Spitfire sim-pit build thread circa '16/17: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=143452

Tomsk Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Or get the drop on the bugger... You know, like they did IRL. A Spitfire with an energy advantage is a scary thing. You can't outrun it, because they have an energy advantage. Can't out climb for the same reason: zoom climb beats sustained. Can't out turn. Can't out roll the clipped wing variant. Something like a 190 can dive for the deck and if the 190 has enough altitude then the Spitfire can't follow. Or a 190 can sucker the Spit into a high speed contest, where the 190 has an advantage. But not so with a 109, which can't really dive any better than a Spit, and doesn't tolerate high speeds well. The 109 is a monster if it has the energy advantage, or even co-E, but without that it's likely to be on the back foot.
