upupandaway Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 (edited) Several years back, a former girlfriend of mine introduced me to Action-RPGs with TES: Morrowind. It is one of my favorite series until today. Later, I tried talking a female friend of mine into fyling the A-10C just for a moment to get an impression, but I did not succeed... Playing flightims is mostly considered quite nerdy, to some degree even within the gaming community itself. People must be rather concious of the things projected on them as a minority to even raise such a question by themselves: Are XXX part of our community and what does it imply? Usually, in the gaming world, it is women who speak up because they feel disrespected and want to be acknowledged as equal members of the community. Luckily these forums are visited by mostly very civil people and even the servers don´t see excessive hating and trolling like elsewhere. I think that´s rather something to be proud of which this thread also represents to me. Maybe the flight sim community could partly mimic whatever the military does to specifically adress female pilots so the community may grow further. Going to schools and all that... DieHard Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 What sobek said (both postings), plus: Most girls just don't get excited by planes shooting missiles, dropping bombs and causing explosions. And even less are interested in reading the 500+ pages of manual to even get into the air. That's a bit of a stereotype but it is true most often. My wife has been trying to get me into knitting for years. She is just a fanatic with knitting and her girl friends as I am with the flight sims. A few guys do take it up, but the guys I have seen are not the kind of guys I like to hang with. Thomas Edison used to knit, he said he found it relaxing while he thought out his next project. One thing about her retreats, sometimes I tag along to a nice hotel or a cruise and find something interesting to do, but not knit. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

About the disrespect thing... I have found the women that try to work in a guy's world tend to complain about how guys give them a hard time. My trade is industrial machine shop. Getting into this trade is not easy for a guy! Men tend to treat men harshly in the workplace, that is just the way it is. It has nothing to do about being un-nice to women that want to join in. The few that stick with it, see that is how it is and adapt and quit whining. I have not encountered the ladies in DCS, but I have found them in other online flight sims and thay are just as competitive as any guy I have encountered. But I agree with Sobek, they would be best to keep a low profile. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

sobek Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 (edited) Men tend to treat men harshly in the workplace, that is just the way it is. It has nothing to do about being un-nice to women that want to join in. The few that stick with it, see that is how it is and adapt and quit whining. Before it was like it is, it was different. This is simply a very bad excuse to treat newcomers badly. Does having had a childhood upbringing in which you where hit entitle you to hit your own children? I would opine differently. Same goes for the workplace. Being treated badly by your superiors/older colleagues does not entitle you to mistreat the ones who follow. All it takes is for someone to break the cycle. But I agree with Sobek, they would be best to keep a low profile. Never would i say "best for them". If you've read that into my posts, consider yourself corrected. In many cases it is simply impossible for a woman to get enjoyment out of a multiplayer game if she gives her gender away. Something being the lesser evil does not make it "best". Scarecrow Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Funny story about female gamers. My ex played WOW, had a lovely speaking voice and would exploit male players lameness to get the pick of the best gear in dungeons and raids. There was a female IL2PF pilot who was very well respected in the community, only flew Japanese aircraft as I remember.
GripenNG Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 I had a girlfriend once who tested flying the Su-27 in FC2...and nope she didn´t stay in the seat long until she was bored. I´ve never played MP (almost embarrassed to admit it), but the female voice tends to be a lot smoother and just plain sweet to listen to over Teamspeak. Who doesn´t want more of that? :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Snooze-81st-vFS
leafer Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Why would anyone want a girlfriend that likes flight simulation? That would be boring as hell, man. ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Leafer, you clearly underestimate the bliss of a girlfriend with an interest for military history/aviation. Having a drink while discussing the loading system of the Navy's 5" guns used in mid-1939... That kind of thing is priceless :D And about female pilots, they're probably too busy flying the bloody missions instead of caring what some sexist dudebro's opinions are ;)
leafer Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 :D haha Maybe I just like doing things I love on my own with the exception of certain thing one must do with a partner. :P ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
