Although my introduction into combat flightsims began with Falcon 3.0 , DID's EF-2000 seemed to have that special something that I remember fondly to this day. The A-10c beta is definitely rekindling that feeling again... This should be something special.2 points

My 2 cents. I consider this to be a game just like the ArmAx games are games. Something can be a sim and a game at the same time, but really, quite a few games are technically real time simulations these days--you have frames being calculated against some sort of physics model, objects with different physical characteristics that react, and so on. Even a game like Hawx is a sim from a technical aspect--it has to be in order to have the presentation layer that it does, with real time interaction, physics, and everything else the market expects a game to have. But, it's a game. Usage pretty much dictates definition in this case and it's being used for an entertainment purpose. And so is what we play here. The fact that we derive enjoyment out of reading the manuals and learning how everything works in detail does not detract from that, nor should it be taken to mean that people who game in DCS are somehow more elite than those who choose to play MW2 or whatever. I haven't played MW2 but I do have Bad Company 2, and that's very easy to pick up and zone out on, which is what you tend to want to do at times if you have a busy schedule. The rampant ego nursing that goes on in some of the "hardcore" communities (flight sim, military 'sim', etc) can be a real turnoff for the casual player who may not yet know if he or she would be interested in learning the finer details of some of the more complex games out there. I remember in the 90s around the time Falcon 4 came out, and even before, you had a lot of roleplay-based stuff going on, where people were taking it incredibly seriously. I've been out of the loop for many years, but to the casual observer, that sort of thing comes off as incredibly goofy. I totally believe that this is, in part, why these games are forced to serve a niche market. I wish it was not that way, but the barrier for entry into this genre is far higher from both a financial standpoint and a time commitment standpoint. Adding elitism to the mix won't help that. I really do think it's awesome that ED can afford to bring these high fidelity sims to the consumer market but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that it's closer to the reality side of the spectrum than the gaming side--it may be a few nudges closer and immensely enjoyable (for those of us who dig this sort of thing) as a result, but let's look at it for what it is. If the FAA says it's cool to start logging sim time or instrument sim time using this game then I guess I would start considering it a simulator in the "classic" sense for that purpose. But I doubt that will happen anytime soon, and for good reason.2 points

Not my intent to spam or anything, but the guide I made to dropping JDAMs also explains how to save markpoints to the CDU. CDU specific stuff is about 3 minutes in. Pay attention to the left side of the CDU screen and what gets typed into the pad.2 points

UPDATED 03/15/2011 I thought it would be good to post here my approach to configure the X-52 in this sim since many people could be new to it and could use it as a starting point. Attached to this post are 2 files: the Saitek .pr0 profile and the DCS A-10C .lua profile. Also you can see in the pictures below the controls arrangement. Note that the italic commands are executed in conjunction with the pinky switch located in the base of the control stick. This profile is optimized for TrackIR users. You may want to replace some functions with the camera panning commands if you don't own one. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW CAREFULLY TO AVOID TROUBLE. All the steps are simple, you just have to pay attention to not screw anything up. INSTRUCTIONS 1) To load the .lua profile: Open up A-10C options screen, controls. Select any cell in the Saitek X-52 column. Click "Load Profile" on top and point to the .lua file. Beware that if you leave selected a cell from other controller (e.g. keyboard, mouse, etc) you will overwrite that controller definition with the .lua file, so double check before you confirm the changes. In any case, backup the Config/Input folder, in the case you need to revert the changes. 2) To load the .pr0 profile: Copy the .pr0 file to the Saitek profiles folder (in my case is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Saitek SD6 Profiles). The profile should appear in the right-click menu of the Saitek taskbar icon. Right click the Saitek taskbar icon and ensure the "SFJackBauer A-10C" item is clicked. 3) Configure the speed brake slider: Inside DCS A-10C, change the "HOTAS Speed brake switch forward" keyboard key to "N", and the "HOTAS Speed brake switch aft" keyboard key to "B". This enables the use of the slider as a speedbrake controller (check pic below). If you open up a chat textbox, and it is spammed with BBBBBBB or NNNNNNN keys, then remember to set back the slider to the center position :). Tips * Use the Cockpit illumination switch (T4) for dark ramp-starts. * The buttons in the throttle LCD alone give access to the radios. When used with the pinky, are useful to switch between the flight plan and markpoints. * Use T5 and T6 to light up your engines. * The mousewheel behind the throttle gives access to the NVG functions, when combined with the pinky. * You can use the "i" (clutch) button in the throttle to command your voice chat program as I do. To do that you need to disable the clutch functionality in the Control panel -> Joysticks, and assign a key to the clutch button inside the Saitek Profile Editor. Your feedback and testing is warmly welcomed! ENJOY!!!! :pilotfly: SFJackBauer A-10C X-52 Profile.zip1 point

I thought for fun and games, and a little Google exercise, I'd go through and make a list of the real-world functions of all the buttons, switches, and knobs that are listed as "No Function" in the manual. Fun with manuals! IFF Panel Mode: In EMER, the transponder is turned on and will reply with the emergency transponder code when interrogated (7700 for mode 3). RAD TEST switch: When set to MON, the IFF will monitor its own reply rate. The green TEST light will come on if replies are being sent successfully in a timely fashion. The RAD TEST position is not used. IDENT switch: When moved to IDENT, starts a 25-second identification of position. This will cause the A-10 to illuminate ("bloom") on a radar controller's display, making it easy to identify. When in the MIC position, an ident is transmitted every time the mic is keyed. CODE dial: In A, the M4 code stored in register A is used. In B, the M4 code stored in register B is used. When moved to ZERO, both M4 codes are wiped. Normally the M4 codes are also wiped when the IFF is turned off, unless the CODE dial is in HOLD, in which case they are stored for next powerup. UHF Radio TONE button: Press to transmit a 1,000 KHz tone. Also used in HAVE QUICK word of day (WOD) configuration. MN SQ knob: Sets the squelch for the main receiver (the minimum volume before the radio transmits to the headset). GD SQ knob: Sets the squelch for the guard receiver VHF Radio 2 SQ DIS/TONE switch: Center-loaded. In TONE, transmits a 1,000 KHz tone. In SQ DIS, disables squelching. Secure Voice Panel Mode dial: In OP, scrambles and decodes transmissions. In LD, allows the radio to receives cryptokeys via the fill port. In RV, allows the radio to receive a cryptovariable over-the-air into register 6. DELAY switch: This is either not used, or if it is used, is turned on when the KY-58 is retransmitting. Not sure. TACAN Panel Mode dial: In A/A T/R, provides range and distance information to a reference aircraft (e.g., tanker). Also enables the A-10 to respond to distance interrogations from other aircrafts' TACAN systems. Intercom CALL button: Not used. Environment Panel MAIN AIR SUPPLY switch: When OFF, closes the ECS valve, shutting off engine bleed air, but does not shut off ram air. Cabin air pressure gauge: Self-explanatory. Fuel Panel LINE CHECK button: Checks the integrity of the air refueling pathways before refueling. If there are no problems, the READY light should come on. SIG AMPL switch: In NORM, air refueling actuation and signaling is done normally. In OVERRIDE (used during a failure of the normal refueling sensors), no automatic unlatching occurs; the pilot must manually detach from the tanker. Gear Panel Download Override button: Holding this button down de-energizes the solenoid that holds the landing gear handle in the "down" position when on the ground. TEMS button: Pressing this button records a few seconds of engine data to the data tape. If you start hearing engine gremlins, you press this button so the maintenance folks can sift through the data later to figure out what went wrong. SAS Panel MONITOR TEST switch: When held in the L or R position, simulates a failure in that SAS circuit. CMSP The MENU position of the JMR switch displays a menu of ECM options, largely classified. CMSC UNK button: Displays radars whose type is unknown by the RWR on the scope. RWR <-> screws: Turning these screws adjusts the horizontal and vertical alignment of symbols on the display. In test mode a crosshair is displayed; the technician then rotates these screws to place the crosshair in the center of the scope. Altimeter ELECT/PNEU switch: In ELECT, altimeter data from the CADC is displayed. In the event of CADC failure, the switch can be moved to PNEU, in which case data directly from the pitot tube is used. Accelerometer PUSH TO SET: When pressed, the minimum and maximum G indicators reset to the 1-g position. MFDs CON, SYM, and DSP rockers are explained sufficiently in the manual.1 point

Well I saw this coming a mile away. DCS A-10C comes out and now the servers are all but empty. What about the future of the servers? Are we going to have some servers that are DCS A-10C / DCS KA50 and some that are DCS KA50 / FC 2.0? I really wish ED would consider making both DCS titles compatable with FC 2.0 until they have at least one fast mover. My fear is that this is going to divide an already niche community. My vote is that when a DCS fast mover comes out they just drop FC 2.0 compatability all together, but until then they need to keep them compatable. Any thoughts on this? If ED does not do this I expect to play on some very low populated servers. I would appreciate some official ED feedback as well as some community support.1 point

Now .. that's what I'm talking about! I did RTFM all the way through. I just completed my first flight and it was wildly successful. I created a night mission so I could concentrate on the cockpit while doing practical subsystem familiarization. I created a flightplan with waypoints and bullseye, from the cockpit instead of the mission editor. I took off and was pleased with how the "C" cradled me in information and responded to my HOTAS (see X52pro profile here) Here's the crazy part that made me look around to see if there was a dev looking over my shoulder laughing. After thoroughly reading the manual, creating a night mission, and embarking on my 120 mile check flight.... half way through I had a CADC failure!!! I didn't panic. I knew what to do. My alt/speed were locked and flashing. I selected PNU on the altimeter to open the pitot and get a manual reading. I went to my CDU and tried a hot reset from the systems page; no joy. Tried to cycle the power; no joy.. bit test fail. I checked my 'divert' and found the closest field. I radioed and asked for nav and told them I was inbound. I performed a perfect cold VFR landing. As I went through the shutdown checklist I reflect on how glad I am that I waited for my first flight. My first flight will undoubtedly be remembered as one of my best.1 point

It's not very correct. All the job does old fashioned hydro-mechanical fuel governor requiring no DC power. Electronic EEG is only a MAX power rating supervisor limiting GG rpm redarding atmosphere temperature and pressure. RT-12-6 is the second device that limits only EGT and they use the same electrical valve to limit fuel after fuel governor. Fuel governor itself can limit max power but not so sophisticated as EEG. And finally EEG can shut down the engines if rotor rpm gets dangerously high.1 point

Until there is a fighter for both the Soviet and US aircraft that can fly CAP for CAS forces, then I would be against FC2 compatibility. The few times I've flown DCS:BS in an FC2server, some knucklehead in an SU-27, SU-25, or MiG-29 (A-10 & Su-25T too for the servers with all map markers on) was bound and determined to get his rocks off shooting a CAS helicopter. When asked to join comms and work as a team, the reply was the expected: silence. FC2 is a great sim game when used on a specific mission while using teamwork and communications. Anything else, is sadly, air quake. Solo operatives going up for a team death match. Having just the DCS modules compatible, imho, is going to be the best approach.1 point

I swear if I hear "airquake" again I'll puke. The same server that has people concentrating on nothing but killing can contain people that try to fly in an organized manner. IMO the more the better, least you fly alone. That's just me though. Can't have the cake and eat it to. Of course their advantages and disadvantages to working on FC2 compatibility with future DCS modules, but again IMO only, the wait for a DCS fighter is a long one and as a great fan of FC2 I would rather DCS fighter today. The excellent work on A10 makes me want it more. It is great that the BlackShark works with FC2, but if FC2 was not patched to work with the BS, we probably would already have the A-10C released! It took many months to create FC2. Don't assume since FC and DCS are similar that it would be trivial to patch FC2 to work with A-10. So, I don't want to sim in the more or less same low fi jets that were released in 2005. Use all resources to move on. Patch DCS modules only and leave FC2 as is. Of course this is assuming a fighter is next. For all we know it may not be. Resourses are limited in this niche sim market, this is not EA games.1 point
-
I did not say that there isn't going to be a patch for BS. What i did want to say is ED are going to do the patch until something happens like a volcano erupting in their office or unforseeable HUGE problems arising in the development of the patch. Again, not saying that it won't happen, just as with everything in life, there can be no guarantees for anything. As for future FC development, i do not know what will happen (that means as far as i know, anything is possible, except that wags said that FC2 and DCSW compatibility is unlikely). I know it is very hard to understand for a layman why this patching business means so much work, but these are just immensely complex pieces of software, you change one thing in one part of the software and because of all the complex interdependencies something seemingly totally unrelated stops working. Which has to be tested to be found. Which then has to be fixed. Which might create other problems. You get the picture. It's not like you take this, paste something in, take a few pieces of the old code and voila.1 point

While combining the different sims into a common battlefield would be nice, not doing so is not a deal breaker for me. (1) I do not care about the BS (though I bought it 2 years ago to supprt DCS) and (2) I care even less about lite weight FC2. IMHO. I been waiting for years for a good hardcore A10 sim and that's all I care about. And many hardcore simmers I know feel the same way, especially over at my VFW.1 point
-
To me if they don't make DCS KA50 and DCS A10C compatable thats a deal breaker. I thought the whole idea behind DCS was to have a high fidelity flight sim that had ONLINE compatable modules. Also, don't all the games share the fighter collection engine? I'm no programmer, but I don't understand why its such a huge ordeal to make something compatable that uses the same engine. I also understand that DCS A-10C has graphic upgrades. I totally get that. But to me your already overwriting the part of the game that displays terrain. Can't they just use the same code (on the same engine mind you) for FC 2.0? Also if there are DCS KA50 / A10C and DCS KA50 / FC 2.0 servers both running at the same time how are we supposed to know which are which? Also how do we even know that ED even HAS a next module lined up? They have not announced anything. So a year wait may not even matter if they have nothing planned right now. Im not totally opposed to paying for a DCS A10C comptability patch for FC 2.0 either.1 point

a little high eh? well try to play a military sim by esim for under $125.00. with purchased upgrades. I really think thats what ED should be doing too. Well worth the money for the number of people that actually fly the sim. I would pay $120 for it. good job ED keep it up.1 point

I'm gonna start off by saying I don't have the beta yet due to financial reasons. Had I known the pre-order beta was being released 5 weeks ago when I decided to buy Starcraft 2 I.... probably would have gotten starcraft 2 anyways... but it would have taken a MUCH longer time to decide which is the better choice. All of my info regarding multiplayer is collected from squadmates and comments I've seen on forums, so if anything is wrong feel free to correct me. My understanding is there are thus far very few improvements to the multiplayer interface. I'm not talking about basic server list sorting or other simple features within the server browser that most modern games have in some form of functionality in one way or another. I'm discussing the interface a player sees when they join a server. I feel the most important aspect of a modern game is multiplayer. Unless its got a good single player experience I can't stick with a game that doesn't have MP for to long. Its just my nature, I'd rather learn the A-10 systems or practice flying online with friends than doing it solely in single player. From my information the briefing screen is identical to that of BS. Now if an ED developer comes out and says, "but Grimes it isn't done yet or we haven't made that part yet" I'd understand, but still question the overall logic of waiting so long to work on it and general lack of discussion regarding it. Are there planned improvements? If so, what are they? I remember when the the implementation of the "mission planner" was announced for FC2. A few of us jumped with joy thinking that the MP interface would be changed so that you can work with another player and plan a flight path... but those dreams were crushed as it is only for single player use. Even though I'm not in the beta currently I feel its important to bring up such an issue before the game is released. Cause lets face it, ED isn't exactly known for adding features to a game post release. Sure they gave Black Shark a new sound engine, but that patch was tied directly to a product release and the subsequent required compatibility patch they had to release. Had FC2 not existed, chances are the added features of the compatibility patch would not be released until the Black Shark to DCS:A10 patch would be released.1 point

Unfortunately, MP UI is not in Lua. Yet. I still hope to do it. That's already "fixed", i.e. removed. Because it does not work. To work it needs a hefty amount of code to be redesigned. May be. Briefing will get an ability to show several images. But that's it.1 point

I don't ever think multiplayer is ever going to be used like many would see it used. The reason is that people hop in and out of servers all the time. They do it without being on comms and not having a plan on what they want to do...besides to kill things. Red flags and other things on that level are designed for players to come up with plans/routes and strategies to fight their enemy. Normal mp is never like this. Also, you most people don't really care if they live or die. How many times have you seen players running out of fuel 50 miles from their base and still trying to fight? The same goes for when they run out of missiles and try to engage multi guys with only guns. Maybe if DCS had built in comms it would work, but that is something I don't think we'll ever find out.1 point

Its still a one off. You cant construct a solid argument from that. As an Example PoAF routinely "shoots down" Eurofighters. If I didnt tell you the below you probably would think the F-16 was the superior plane, it was not. The Eurofighters mostly flew with equipment place holders and pilots a little on the green side. There are other factors that can dominate the events (such as ROE) to explain the results, which probably never reach your ears or eyes.1 point

Guys, I have to join in and back up GG on this one, the harrier is not nor has it ever been a particularly good air to air platform. The FA2 was at best an average fleet defence aircraft. In the CAS role however the GR9 is simply superb and in many areas superior to the A-10C, of course in other areas the hog is the better platform. To put it another way the Hog and the GR9 are the best CAS aircraft anywhere ever.1 point

What tune would I sing? The 'oh an Argentinian plane, let's point and shoot' tune? :) VIFFing is last-ditch in a fight, and you'll be lucky if it works (or the pilot behind you has his fangs through the floorboards and didn't figure you were going to do it). This 75% success figure is not something I have ever seen quoted by a real pilot, but hey - not like I have heard all the real pilot quotes. If Harriers, which are tasked with AIR TO GROUND duty in Red Flag, had A2A success against Agressor F-15's in low altitude ACM, you should think about what aircraft those F-15's are simulating before quoting a figure you know nothing about - we know that F-15 pilot are neither poorly trained, nor does the F-15 lack complete and utter superiority in every way that matters in air to air combat over the harrier. Better yet, that might just be an A2G mission success figure 'in spite of' aggressor presence ;) And before you think of continuing to press on with the harrier myth, here's a comment from a real F-16 pilot (note he is refering to US Marine Harriers probably):1 point

I can't see why the friendly fire video can't be on a favorite list. The OP didn't specifiy favorite for what reasons? Learning? Fun? etc. In general videos involving a military aircraft in play equals dead people so how can any of those clips be favorites? Years ago (aka when 56K was fast) I used to run a warez ftp and almost suffered legal action because of it. Piracy is theft. Plain and simple. I knew that when I was running the ftp. When someone downloaded a program from ftp that had been cracked, then they were getting a program for free. 90% of those who download a cracked program never buy it. The legal action is not what prompted me to stop distributing warez. MP3's were. As a recording musician and knowing professional musicians, I saw the effect illegal MP3 downloads had on professional musicians first hand. The standard contract with the label averages to $1 per CD sold in a major retail chain in the US that goes to the artist. The rest goes to the label and distribution company. 100,000 illegal downloads not followed by a purchase was $100,000 the artist never got. Calculate in promotion, recording advances, etc and the artist was in the hole already. Live performances? Calculate in transportation, booking agent fees, venue fees, backline fees, stage fees, sound equipment fees, lighting equipment fees, wages for road crew and IATSE personnel, meals and travel for all crew, meals for the artist, management fees, taxes for merchandise, venue fees for selling merchandise, etc Now split what's left among the band members. They weren't making much unless they were superstar status. Software developers are under the same sort of gun. If they don't sell, they don't make money. Every pirated copy that isn't followed by a sell is lost income that cannot be tracked or claimed as a financial loss. It takes a team of people to make a piece of software and they have to be paid somehow. Every piece of software I own is a purchased copy. Most software companies release a demo. Youtube is a great source for finding ingame reviews and there's plenty of other places to get written reviews. There's no excuse not to pay for the software except the thrill of getting it for free when one is not supposed to. There's a reason the PC market is going to crap - there's no money in it due to the amount of piracy. And bit torrents are only a portion of it. Rapidshare, MegaUpload, Hotfile, etc There's entire sites out there dedicated to illegal sharing of copyrighted material hosted on those sites.1 point

Wake up in the middle of the night screaming "CICU!" First thing when you wake up you instinctively feel around for the battery and inverter switches.1 point
