  1. leafer there's no one answer to your question. Every airfield will have its own procedures. The departure and arrival procedures will specify a track, altitude restrictions, and, maybe, airspeed requirements. The track can be defined by TACAN or INS between waypoints with altitude limits at various waypoints. There may be a visual ground track in lieu of an instrument procedure. The visual departure and arrival is more expeditious and permits more aircraft to fit into the air space. It also has the benefit of denying an enemy navigation aids like TACAN to attack your base. In a combat zone they would be turned off if there was a threat and you would have to fly by reference to the ground or INS. Arrival is much the same. There is usually an instrument arrival to an instrument approach or a "gate" where you can join the visual traffic pattern. The visual pattern is defined locally by a track, altitudes, and required airspeeds. The overhead pattern is one you should learn. I won't go into it now since it is more complex than I have time to explain. A copy of the A-10 Dash 1 can give you a hint about what it is if not a good idea of how to actually fly it. There are several guys around who can clue you in if you really are interested. The Dash 1 has some other good information. For instance: Standard climb speed is 200 KIAS minus 1 knot per 1000' above sea level (MSL) Single engine best climb speed is 170 KIAS minus 1 knot per 1000' above sea level (MSL) clean and varies with gear down or flaps down by minus 10 knots for each Cruise speeds and altitudes are dependent on a number of variables. There are charts to pick an optimum altitude and airspeed/mach based on gross weight, drag index, and atmospheric conditions of temperature and wind. For the kind of flying done in the sim 200-300 KIAS is fine as there is seldom any reason to be precise. I'd suggest you pick something, say 250 KIAS, and learn to maintain, as well as a specific altitude, it at all times you're not blowing up stuff or getting shot at. Max range cruise is ~15.6 units of AOA IRL but I don't know how close it is in the sim. There's something to play with... Takeoff and landing speeds are dependent on temperature, pressure altitude, gross weight, and drag index. Generally, rotating to takeoff pitch attitude at 120 KIAS and holding it until you fly off the ground works quite well. Similarly, maintaining 150 KIAS until you extend the gear and flaps works fine. Approach speed with full flaps can vary from 110 to 160 KIAS depending on weight. Flying the AOA indexer is the best technique. Note the airspeed where you get the green donut and keeping that speed works fine. There's a start for you. The best I can tell you is to set your own parameters and practice them until you can make the aircraft go where you want at the airspeeds and altitudes you choose. Its all a matter of building the discipline and skill to make the jet do what you want it to do.

  2. Hi all, I have been working on a wiki website for the DCS series, and now that it has a decent amount of content, I wanted to post a link here to let people know that it is available. http://www.dcswiki.com/ This is definitely still a work in progress, as there are a lot of sections and pages which need more content (in particular there's almost nothing yet about Black Shark). I've mostly been focusing on the A-10's systems and avionics for now, but there is a decent amount of content on other subjects as well. The page on the A-10's electrical system (http://www.dcswiki.com/index.php?title=Electrical_system_(A-10)) is a good example of a "complete" page and the level of detail I am hoping to eventually have. I'd really like to hear any feedback that people have about the site (what you like, what you don't like, what types of things you think should have more content). I'm also hoping to find some more people interested in contributing to the site. Anyone can make an account and start editing and adding content, there's no need to ask for permission or anything (that's the point of a wiki site after all :D). Anyways, hope you enjoy and find it useful.

  3. Ugh. :disgust: Look, I'm not trying to usurp the ED wiki or anything like that. To be honest I wasn't even aware that ED had a wiki until I had already been working on my site for months. By that point I had a specific idea for what I was trying to create. The ED wiki focuses on a completely different topic than my wiki (troubleshooting and technical info). It also has no indication at all about: What types of content they want How that content should be organized Limitations on what can be added (for example, will they be OK with quoting extensive portions of the A-10 flight manual?) What content license they use. This matters for importing content from Wikipedia, for example. Whether they are OK with including information which is not specific to ED games. For example, my wiki has a page about how jet engines work, which is important background information but doesn't directly pertain to DCS. Is that going to be OK with ED? Whether they will by OK with referencing games not produced by ED. For example, say I'm writing an article about CCIP and make a reference to Falcon 4. Is that going to be deleted by ED? Whether they will be OK with hosting potentially hundreds of megabytes of files and images, including large PDFs like the flight manuals? In short, I had spent months working on my site, and I didn't want that effort to be wasted or deleted because someone at ED decided they didn't agree with the content I was writing or how I had it organized. I had a specific idea for what I was trying to create, and therefore I decided to continue on with my site rather than trying to graft my content onto someone else's wiki that is organized and maintained completely differently.

  5. SIDS and STARS are followed and the climb rates are up to the crews, but if they are less than AIM standard ATC must be told. Once the crews reach the MOA or Range thay are working, they are "Cleared Tactical" and work the mission via the assistance of other Assets (AWACS, JSTARS, GCI etc) The speed rules that apply to civilian aircraft don't really apply to fighters as there is a caveat in the AIM and the ATC regs that states crews may flight higher speeds if needed for mission accomplishment to include training.

  7. The use of "F" keys for radio commands was just a pain for me. I hated reaching over from one side of the keyboard to bring up the comm menu and then reaching with the other hand to hit an numbered "F" to activate the command. It's very distracting when in battle trying to hit a bunch of keys to tell your wingy to hit targets. I started cruising through files and then looked on the board and searched for changing the keystrokes for Radio Comms. I didn't find anything, so if this has been posted already I apologize. I thought others may have use for this also. I found the file that controls the radio "F" commands and changed the layout. For those of us who don't have the Warthog hotas this may make your life a little easier. This is how I have it mapped now. If you go into your options menu and change the Radio buttons to the directions keys that sit next to your number keypad (see Photo below) you can make your left Direction key the VHF/FM radio, the down direction key your UHF radio, and the right direction key your VHF/AM radio. These keys are identified as HOTAS MIC switch in the controller options menu. Then make your up direction key your radio com menu toggle. This would normally be the backslash key. Then go into your :\.....DCS A10 Beta\Scripts\input folder and open your CommandMenuItems.lua file using notepad and change the "F" key strokes to the following. Changes in red: CommandMenuItems = { keyCommands = { {combos = {{key = 'Num1'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem1}, {combos = {{key = 'Num2'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem2}, {combos = {{key = 'Num3'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem3}, {combos = {{key = 'Num4'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem4}, {combos = {{key = 'Num5'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem5}, {combos = {{key = 'Num6'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem6}, {combos = {{key = 'Num7'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem7}, {combos = {{key = 'Num8'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem8}, {combos = {{key = 'Num9'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem9}, {combos = {{key = 'Num0'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem10}, {combos = {{key = 'F11'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem11}, {combos = {{key = 'F12'}}, down = ICommandMenuItem12}, {combos = {{key = 'Esc'}}, down = ICommandMenuExit}, {combos = {{key = 'Tab'}}, down = ICommandSwitchDialog}, {combos = {{key = 'Tab', reformers = {'LShift'}}}, down = ICommandSwitchDialog}, -- {combos = {{key = '\'}} down = ICommandSwitchToCommonDialog} } } So now all your "F" radio keystrokes are on your Numberpad. Now when you want to ask to startup, takeoff, or send your wingy to do something its a quick single hand keystroke and they are close together. You want to ask for start up or take off, just hit your right direction key (VHF/AM Radio), then tap the number for current airfield and then ask for permission so it would just be right direction keypad 1-1. Or say you want to tell your wingy to attack ground targets. You hit down direction for UHF radio 1-2-1 or to attack air defenses, it would be direction key down for UHF and then key pad numbers 1-2-4. Check in with JTAC would be left direction key for VHF/FM Radio and 4-1-1 or whatever JTAC you want to check in with if multiples in mission. Its so much faster and you don't have to flip from one hand to the next and you don't have to look for that one certain "F" keystroke. WARNING!!! This will change any defaults you have for said keys but they are view and control keys and I think for the most part they are unused by the average flight simmer. Anyways! Thought it may help some out with looking for that "$%Q^_#%(_Q#^%_Q*^!!!!" "F" Keystroke when in combat mode! Have fun!

  8. I'm interested in learning real military flight rules and regulations. What is the normal cruise speed and altitude for the A-10s. What's the procedure, if any, in climbing. I mean do they just take off, turn to proper heading then climb to alt? Basically, when I take to the virtual air I do as please and would like to start learning real world procedures.

  12. Good introduction, on a quick read-through. One minor point, though: In the real world, that's setting yourself up for a blown engine. Power is a function of torque and RPM. Full throttle at low RPM means bringing the torque way up, and the engines aren't dimensioned for it. You overtorque the prop shaft, overstress the pistons and con rods and bring the combustion chamber pressures up, risking detonation, piston head failure and blown gaskets. Rule of thumb is to always have the RPM forward of the throttle. Reduce throttle first and then RPM on power reduction, and push the prop forward first when increasing power. At high altitudes, when air density is reducing power output, it can be viable. The key is to use the manifold pressure gauge. On the monster engines of WWII fighters, with massive turbo/superchargers, that will be very high up though. Edit: Am buying, and joining the fray this summer. :)

  14. Again great info... Curious about something else. In FC1 flying the MIG or Su when you hit the sound barrier [hear the sonic boom when outside the plane] no matter what altitude, the mach meter always indicated exactly mach 1 as it should. Now in FC2 only when near ground level will the sonic boom happen exactly at mach 1. As you fly higher the sonic boom happens at mach 1.1, higher 1.2, higher 1.3 and so on. This shouldn't happen, the mach meter should adjust for altitude and the sonic boom should always occur at mach 1 regardless of altitude. I understand you will be flying at slower true air speed the higher your altitude to achieve mach 1.

  19. Not "beta 5" as that doesn't exist yet. It's most likely the current internal ED build, which is usually a little bit ahead of the testers build, which in turn is ahead of the current public beta. Of course the current internal and testers builds will become public beta 5 when ED feel the time is right.

  20. I had an X-52 pro and used it for Black Shark, too. Now, I own a TM Warthog. The letter is a lot more precise, and thus, overall, I like it more than the X-52 for the BS. Nevertheless, there are some downsides in my (unbiased ;-) ) opinion: - The original buttons of the Shark can be mapped better to the X-52 since it has more buttons instead of multi-way-hats on the stick - Using a button for triggering, the ones on the stick demand too much force to press, so the "hold-down-method" for trimming is somewhat less comfortable. I sometimes released the button accidentally - I found the throttle of the X-52 better suited for collective control. Hope that helps, cheers, Torsten
