Hi ED, Are we going to be getting a pilot body as part of the planned refurbishment later this year?
-
I remember this was mentioned a while back... We will be seeing a pilot body any time soon? Makes a big difference in VR

Nvidia RTX cards and DCS - ?

Since you currently have a 1060, you really have less of a dilemma. Anything you buy will give you a good boost in performance. I would cautiously say that, given the small price difference, you have nothing to lose in getting the 2080. Yes, it has a little less VRAM, but you are future proof in terms of DLSS. That being said, even as an owner of a 1080 ti, I was eagerly awaiting the next generation of cards, since not even this card fulfills my VR needs. It certainly still requires careful tweaking for you to get acceptable performance in VR. I'm still hoping for VR benchmarks that can potentially justify an upgrade to a 2080ti. Since you have much more to be gained from an upgrade, I'd actually even recommend going straight for the 2080 ti, if you want the ultimate in VR performance and only IF you can bear to part with that kind of cash. Sure, we're missing the relevant benchmarks, but there isn't any doubt that it's certainly the fastest card available. -
I'm also leaning heavily towards the 5k+. But are we sure that there are any performance benefits to it? If the input resolution is the same, shouldn't we be seeing better performance from the 8k, as we only need to reach 80 fps instead of 90?

This is very good news indeed. Further software improvements will only bring us closer to the performance we need.

Spitfire - Glass and Reflection Mod
Boris replied to toby23's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Hi Toby, thanks for this mod. It's been a must have for me, but unfortunately it has stopped working. The file location is still correct, but the files will only be recognised if they're inside the archive. -
Even though the FOV is larger, the visual pixel density is also higher (than Rift) on both the 5k and the 8k. It should be a larger FOV as well as better image quality.
-
I find it very hard to believe that this is the case (that a higher PD setting is necessary). Even Rift at 1.0 PD looks fine, especially with antialiasing. The 5k+ is bound to look much better at 1.0 than the Rift at 1.0. If it doesn't, something is off. Using PD settings on the Pimax 5k+ any higher than 1.0 is truly ludicrous from a performance point of view, so it's absolutely no wonder Sweviver said the game runs terribly. Some numbers for perspective: Oculus Rift 1080x1200 per eye = approx. 2.6 million pixels Pimax 5k+/8k 2560×1440 per eye = approx. 7.3 million pixels (this is already incredibly demanding) PD of 2.0 = 14.7 million pixels (insane) To simulate the performance impact of the Pimax with the Rift you'd need a PD setting of over 2.8! A PD of 2.0 on the Pimax would be over 5.6 for the Rift!!!

Are we sure that a PD of 1.0 is always the native resolution of the headset?
-
It's true that you need a high end system for VR, but you seem to be going for that anyway. Coming from a 40 inch 4k screen, the Rift still makes for a better experience, despite the comparatively low resolution. DCS is completely enjoyable with current generation headsets.
-
Shipping to kickstarter backers, yes. It's entirely possible that Pimax's proprietary ASW "brainwarp" will be released by the time the headset is commercially available. That's the plan.
-
Thanks for posting. 5k+ seems to be a definite winner based on this. I wonder what pixel density setting was used.
-
I wonder why Sweviver needed to turn up pixel-density so far for a good image? Could it be that PD in DCS is set to Vive/Rift native resolution at the 1.0 setting, and that 1.0 on the Pimax means that it's effectively downsampled? So you would need to dial it up to get to the 5k's native?
-
I hope they scrapped this idea in favour of a TM (and Virpil) compatible grip.
-
I wonder if there is a large difference in general clarity between 5k+ and 8k. Yes, the SDE would be much reduced on 8k, but running below native resolution on a screen usually results in blurriness. At least this is the experience on monitors. Any reason why this wouldn't be the case with the Pimax 8k? Clarity isn't so much of a concern for most VR gamers, but in DCS we need to be able to read cockpit instruments and labels as best we can. Maybe the 5k+ will do a better job of that.
-
That sounds like a very different problem. I've never seen that before. The mirrored mirror has already been fixed.
-
Hey Alpenwolf, are you planning on adding missions based in the Persian Gulf and Nevada maps?
-
StarVR One is an enterprise product. Also, like everyone, Pimax is well aware of the next nVidia generation and even hinted that they might have some kind of early access to it.
-
Also couldn't load tanks or countermeasures last night. There were also many others on the server chat with the same problem.
-
An issue I have always had, but has now been plaguing me more often, is long loading pauses in Multiplayer. My Rift headset will freeze or go completely black, showing an hourglass symbol. These freezes range from half a second to something as long as 10 seconds. Of course the simulation continues in the background and I'm pretty sure it still responds to my control inputs during the "black-out". Yesterday my headset went black during a dogfight causing me to crash. I'm sure that this is a multiplayer thing, as it doesn't happen in single player. Does anyone else have this problem and is it solved on DCS or Oculus side? Or is it even VR specific?

There is no way to reactivate the pilot in the A-10C as there was never one in the first place. A few aircraft are lacking pilots unfortunately. The MiG-21 and the Viggen also come to mind. To create and integrate a new pilot model is a custom effort, so you can't just use a pilot from another aircraft.

It's also entirely possible you won't get any motion sickness at all. Never had it myself.
