  1. Like Penguin said too is good...... but watch the descent rate. At slower forward speeds you can get into a lot of trouble very quickly when your descent rate dips below (faster then) 500. You will also learn where your torque gauge should be in various weight configurations
  2. There is a Game Mode in options that is very simplified and arcade like... Not Good There is lots of help to be found here and links to actual heli flying manuals that would really help you You will need to vary rudder pressure as yaw requirements vary especially at low speeds and close to ground. Sideways drift will need opposite roll / tilt with the cyclic. Most control inputs are going to be much lighter then you think they should be. Gentle, tiny corrections. Then neutralize the cyclic. If you hold the corrective input too long you will just takeoff in the opposite direction. All the controls will have to be worked and balanced as your flight attitude changes. But in very general terms think of the cyclic / stick as your speed control and the collective as your altitude control. You will pull back on the cyclic to slow down but you will also have to adjust the collective to avoid climbing. How much will vary. Then as you slow you will likely need to push forward again on the cyclic to maintain desired new speed and adjust collective to maintain altitude. Get up in the air and practice - practice - practice changing speeds with out loosing or gaining altitude. Slow and easy to start and then faster as you gain comfort level. In the docs for each aircraft in DCS you will find printable manuals with pictures of gauges
  3. Thanks for those chart photos Peter. Is there a more readable printer version ? Thanks

    display?

There are a number of good training missions and videos that you should checkout.
  5. The thing with the Mig's seems to be quite random as I don't have any problem some missions and other time.... BANG, down you go. I have a hard time buying that your typical Mig jockey would go skimming along at treetop level to nail a Huey using guns. But other then that a very immersive mission with random events that fits the Huey very well Edit: I just got nailed by another Mig 23 at tree top level. Maybe when we get door gunners who are smart enough to shoot they will also be able to at least warn the pilots about the approaching Mig. I don't like to use the map to look for threats. Seems like cheating to me.
  6. With over 90,000 threads and almost 2 million posts, there is bound to be a lot of repetition as new or occasional users cycle through. Often people don't search very deep or don't feel the search has turned up what they are looking for.
  7. Yeah I think that without being able to feel motion and vibration, a little exaggeration visually helps the perception
  8. Pay attention to the tip for retrieving the track file from an MP game you played and converting it to a miz file for playing offline. Works great !
  9. Very good stuff ! (Hanscom is just up the road from me too) I had already started spending more time looking ahead instead of down. Also the small stick movements and then return is key. If you don't neutralize BEFORE you notice a correction to your drift then you've waited too long and will just have to chase it in the other direction.
  10. I'm enjoying this quite a lot in SP as it has more going on around you then CSARandAMjune16.miz which is also quite good and easier to stay alive in. In the Helicopter Wars there is more of a sense of an active combat environment going on around you. In one recent flight I was trying to drop off reinforcements to my guys while the opponents heli was trying to do the same for his. Got interesting. I strafed their guys. My guys beat the ones left. I drove off the Mil-8. I crashed trying to pick my guys back up. Now I need a lift too and that actually would be a good thing to be able to do in the future. Edit: I popped up the photos above and it looks to me like EagleEye landed on a little more then just the green smoke
  11. One thing that might help the transition for some is to initially try for landings with really slow forward movement. A steady easy decent with SLOW forward movement keeping focused on your desired landing spot. And don't start with too much altitude as you will be trying to lose too much, too quickly which can get you into trouble. Once you are comfortable in this mode the transition to hover on landing approach might prove easier to accomplish without ballooning or descending too rapidly. A lot of landings in combat situations are going to be made with more then a little forward motion as you come in to the LZ anyway, to limit exposure to nearby small arms fire
  12. Take heart, after 50 hours you'll wonder what the problem was you were having at 5 hours. PS Lots of help and good tips to be had here and over at the 229th 1rst Cav also
  13. Keep practicing and also like learning to ride a bicycle it suddenly just clicks. And when making those tiny corrections if you don't ease off the stick pressure till you see a change then you've waited to long
  14. Door gunners and co-pilot who can auto shoot of course. But then how about getting a heads up from your door gunners when bandits are approaching. Without modern electronics you could use active eyes from the rest of the crew.
  15. I have to spend a little more time playing with it, but the procedure outlined above by jay43 seems to kinda work. My execution was a bit sloppy the first go but did look promising actually. And remember that it calls for "gentle" turns of 10 degrees.
  16. All of a sudden it will click for you Fuzzy Bear, keep practicing. For me, in the few seconds it takes to figure out where the tracers are coming from I usually no longer have a tail boom so hovering really becomes a problem.... but you don't have to worry about it for long.
  17. My framerate was a tad low and when I adjusted things and got the fps up a bit, hovering became instantly easier..... amazing difference a few fps can make in the control of the Huey..... can't stop going up "just one more time", so guess I like it. My other DCS aircraft are getting dusty.
  18. Interesting quote from Chickenhawk, "It wasn't a matter of just putting the collective in one position and leaving it there; constant corrections had to be made."
  19. Yeah it is pretty much only adjusted at startup. Might be in other situations too but not really relevant in game.
  20. Some days it feels like you're just locked to a rail without feeling like you're watching the gauges. Other days not so good. Time, practice and lot of little visual clues start to take hold in your subconscious. And making friends with the trimmer function can help all flying attitudes a LOT. Leaving the "Central Position Trimmer Mode" unchecked and mapping a convenient stick button works best for me. But the advice you see from others throughout these forums to Trim - Trim - Trim really helps EVERYTHING when flying this bird. ( Your individual results may vary ) Honestly, the time you spend getting comfortable with trimming will pay off big time.
  21. That collective looks SO good so far. Please keep us informed.....
  22. Everytime I look at the components on my rc helis, part of me still thinks, "this can't possibly work or stay attached for long if it does". Has to be more then a little magic involved in this technology.
  23. Just gave this one a brief tryout. I very much like the idea of multiple tasks with frequent takeoffs and landing and no one trying to blow you out of the sky every few minutes. I only did a couple tasks and will go back for another go but I found the LZ markers a bit odd. I land right on / under the smoke and get told I have to move another 49m or so. Seems the LZ perimeters should maybe be a bit more defined ? DCS crashed on me which hasn't happened before so I will go in and try this mission again. Good concept I believe.
  24. I thought I'd try out these in SP just to get a look and feel. MO1 was very good for lots of takeoff and landing practice in varied terrain shuffling troops around. MO2 Death Valley started out with fps so low it was unplayable right from the get go. On a whim I went into the mission editor and shut off the rain. Fps jumped to a more then acceptably smooth rate. Even flying formation with the 6 other choppers all the way down through the valley was very good. Amazing how much affect a few rain drops had on fps. I have a quad, i7 3.4, Nvidea with a pile of video ram, Win 8 Razer Game Booster
  25. @xentxo I believe that "members" are just for the general forum and "1rst CavDiv members" are full members with group privileges inc mp flying
