How to completely disable reprojection (HP Reverb G2)?
GunSlingerAUS replied to PicklePicklePickle's topic in Virtual Reality
Have you done a merge with another fighter jet yet? When I'm flying around enjoying the scenery, reprojection is hard to notice. As soon as I am in close range of other aircraft, friend or foe, the reprojection artefacts just destroy the immersion for me. As we merge, and I follow them with my head, the ghosting of the aircraft just looks terrible. Apparently some folks can't see it though. -
I've been doing carrier quals with my squadron, and the analogue clock is obviously vitally important for Case 3 marshals. I always check the clock before taking off, to ensure it's matching with the F10 clock. However, after I take off and get to my marshal stack, it seems to have drifted by about 20 to 30 seconds. Is this caused by network desync, as I'm connecting from Australia to a US server? Or can pulling high Gs affect the clock?

about to lose me as a customer . . .

You get 90fps? Wow, I wouldn't be quitting DCS considering you have a magic PC that can get an FPS that is basically impossible for most users. My lowly 3090 can't even maintain 45fps during normal combat missions. -
VR vs a very large monitor with TrackIR

Yep, I reckon VR isn't far off to be truly superior to bigscreen 4K displays. Maybe 3 years if we're lucky. Right now it feels like we're on the cusp, as seen by the users who already enjoy it. I've been a VR advocate for over a decade, well before the first Rift, so it's been fantastic to see how far its come. I'm personally gonna keep my G2, as there are other sims that look and run beautifully in it. -

Sorry that you spent so much money chasing the VR dream. Again and again we hear from some VR fans that it's amazing, and totally smooth, and must-have. These claims cause folks like you to spend money chasing an experience that doesn't exist. Until we can get a solid 60fps out of DCS while running the Reverb at 60Hz, (or even better, 90fps at 90Hz) you're going to get reprojection. And if you get reprojection, you will get the ghosting that is always associated with it. One last thing to try - set your HMD to 60Hz (it's in the actual Windows' Mixed Reality settings - stupidly called frame rate). That way, if you can hit 60fps most of the time, you won't see any reprojection. I wouldn't bother with all the myriad of tweaks that are thrown around here. The vast majority aren't tested properly, and likely placebo. The ones that do help performance are the terrain shadows mod, kegetys shaders mod, lowering of resolution and details, and the WMR reprojection setting. -

I don't think you are in the minority - I know many DCS players who tried VR, thought it was cool at first, but after a few hours found the issues too great to continue with and went back to 2D. I have used a 34" IPS curved Ultrawide, Reverb and Reverb G2, and the LG C9 55", all powered by extremely fast hardware (9700K @ 5GHz, 32GB DDR4, 2080 Ti and RTX 3090). For me, VR's reprojection artefacts are impossible to ignore, even when I have the detail dialed right down - in 90% of dogfights, even over clear areas and at altitude, when I enter the merge and look at the bogey it stutters and ghosts past me, totally ruining my immersion. Same thing happens when I fly by the carrier, any other aircraft, etc. It is fine for doing circuits and navs, but when combat is involved it's horrible. Apparently some people either don't see, or don't mind, this issue - I struggle to see how, but more power to 'em. Personally, the 55" LG OLED offers a vastly superior experience to my Reverb G2. Bare in mind I'm running an RTX 3090 and, even with the gfx options and resolution very low, performance in VR is intolerable. So, buyer beware - if you can, I highly suggest you try these HMDs out before buying. And don't just fly a few circles high in the sky - get into some actual fun stuff. If you love it, grab that wallet. If not, don't. -
Have you changed your Windows Mixed Reality quality settings at all? Also, can I ask you to do a flyby of the Supercarrier while she has a few Hornets and Tomcats on the deck, at around 1500 feet? I'd be really surprised if you're getting 45fps in this instance. What aircraft do you normally fly, and in what situations?
-
No, just because I don't find the poor performance in VR makes me prone to complaining. It makes me prone to reprojection artefacts, which apparently DCS VR players are not. This is why there's a huge difference in one person's opinion of smooth performance compared to another's. I'm happy to wait until I can get a minimum of 60fps though, in the meantime my VR HMD is put to good use in Elite Dangerous, that other WW2 sim, Star Wars Squadrons, HL: Alyx and a bunch of other games that don't lean on a technology feature that is only meant to be used extremely infrequently (reprojection).

I 100% agree with you. I have the Reverb G2 and an RTX 3090, and find the performance issues too much for me to enjoy VR. I have no doubt that VR is the future of flight sims, but the future has yet to arrive. It's great that others enjoy it, but I think it's also wise to temper claims that it's "the only way to fly", "totally worth buying", etc. Too many people have wasted money as a result of these claims.
-
Yep, it was an IP issue. Like always! Damned Windows/Android networking is a PITA.

Are you running the latest beta? Recent changes have actually made aircraft visibility extremely easy, too easy in fact. Well, that's what some think - personally I think it's a touch overpowered.

GunSlingerAUS replied to BIGNEWY's topic in Virtual Reality
Don't bother doing a full OS reinstall - it will not deliver the performance increase you're after. Instead you really need to dial down your graphics settings, there's no way even a 3090 can power the Reverb at 45fps with those settings. -
So, what would it take for y'all to come live in Australia and start a full-time studio?
-
I'm a little surprised by this - does this mean Heatblur is no longer focused on DCS products?
-
Performance issues fall into the top 5 most commonly reported issues amongst all DCS users, and accurately measuring and comparing performance between different users with different PCs is currently an absolute nightmare, especially in VR. The inclusion of a benchmark feature would be an absolutely huge benefit to the community, and I don't think it'd be too much work to implement, with the caveat that replaying tracks would have to be fixed first (which the community has also been requesting for a long time).

So you can do the missions included with the Spitfire which require the use of the F10 menu to spawn enemy aircraft?
-
Only one of my 3 tablets automatically installed the latest version, and now it's not receiving any information at all. Do I need to run the update script in the install folder?
-
Is this still an issue? I'm trying to fly the Spitfire instant action and included missions. When I hit \, which I've ensured is bound to comms, nothing comes up. So none of the spitfire missions are flyable for me.

Definitely noticed an improvement when using a 4K display, so thank you very much ED! I can't say for sure exactly how much it's improved, but it does seem like fighter sized targets appear as a clear black dot at around 10nm. It might be a little too strong now, but it's better than it was.

3090 and G2 Experiences and Settings
GunSlingerAUS replied to speed-of-heat's topic in Virtual Reality
My G2 is due to arrive in a week - any mods that you'd recommend for the HMD itself? I need to get new VR prescription lenses, as I don't believe the original Reverb add-on lenses will fit? -
Watched Ralfidude's video, looks absolutely brilliant - can't wait to see if I've got what it takes to be a Top Gun!

Horrible performance with RTX 3080 / Reverb G2 / and VR
GunSlingerAUS replied to rss0900's topic in Virtual Reality
Oh dear, welcome to the Reverb club. It's massively more demanding than any other HMD on the market, so you'll need to hugely decrease all your image quality settings, specifically the ones related to the HMD - so things like the Steam application resolution, DCS PD, etc. Good luck - my Reverb v1 is gathering dust, as I found that even my RTX 3090/9700K wasn't powerful enough to deliver a VR experience that I found acceptable. You should be able to maintain 45fps with reprojection with your setup for most of your flying time, which many find ok, but I do not, as I'm extremely sensitive to reprojection artefacts. -
Yes, awesome feature! DCS definitely has the best key bind system of any sim I've played, and I'm pretty sure I've played them all!
-
Ok, I'll update tomorrow when I set this up. Thanks for your help.

Excellent! What will the command be called? I can bind it to a rotary knob on my Virpil right?
