  1. Has there been any info on how far north this map will extend? Will we get sea ice? Svalbard??? The original post has a map with W, E and S limits shown…

  2. Best approach here is to understand that the Harrier and Sea Harrier are very different aircraft with different roles and developed for different users. The Harrier I family (AV-8A in US) were developed for the RAF - mainly intended for forward area battlefield ops. No A2A radar. The Sea Harrier was developed from the Harrier for the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm (F.A.A.) - always intended as a fleet air defence fighter after the Ark Royal / Phantom FG.1s were withdrawn. The first Sea Harrier FRS.1 (FRS = fighter, recon, strike) was equipped with Blue Fox A2A radar and AIM-9 (9L for Falklands conflict) The upgraded Sea Harrier FA.2 was still based on the Harrier I airframe (with most FRS1s upgraded to FA2). The FA2 was equipped with the very capable (and highly classified) Blue Vixen radar, AIM-9s and AMRAAMs. Both Sea Harrier variants are a totally different proposition to the standard Harrier GR series. The OP ( @C3PO ) quotes Sharkey Ward’s Sea Harrier book - which outlines how his Sea Harrier unit cleaned the floor with a US F-5 Aggressor unit as well as with contemporary F-15Cs… and the Sea Harrier joins the F-15 as the only two jets with an unblemished kill to loss ratio Our DCS AV-8B is the upgraded MDD BAE Harrier II airframe… equivalent to the RAF GR5 / GR9…. Still mud movers and not equivalent to the Sea Harrier “family”
  3. Either that or @TripRodriguez has only flown over the Falklands… (I’ve never been, but on the often stated similarity to Dartmoor, I’d assume the subdued moorland terrain and brown tones are pretty representative)
  4. Oh, I totally agree - we are making the same point… The “odd thing” is that the assets are clearly aimed at 1982, but others in here (esp @Silver_Dragon) are now claiming that South Atlantic is a “modern” map and not aimed at the Falklands Conflict timeline
  5. The really odd thing about the assets though… … which is hopefully encouraging… The Argentinian carrier has been added to the asset pack. 25 de Mayo firmly anchors the timeline to the 1980s as she was laid up by the mid-late 80s Narrowing the timeline even further, the presence of ARA Santa Fe in the asset pack is only really relevant up to April 1982… when she was destroyed in South Georgia by the Royal Navy. This vessel was a wreck post Falklands
  6. I have to be cautiously optimistic… The map itself does seem to be getting ongoing work, so that seems to show positive intent. As for the SHAR and the outstanding naval assets, I can only hope that once the F-15E is mostly sorted, then Razbam can revisit. There seems to have been a clear pivot away from 1982 when they bumped into Blue Fox radar issues, but I would truly hope that the Community can help persuade Raz that the effort could be worthwhile - the Kola map would be a great home for Cold War RN assets, including the Sea Harrier and the amphibious assault ships … and of course, the South Atlantic is the bar steward orphan map of DCS without 1982
  7. Easy answer - there is no Sea Harrier I have tried to use the AV-8B as a stand in, but it’s just a different aircraft. You might as well bring a Sopwith Camel to a Battle of Britain scenario. ETA - the AV-8B is a ground pounder… You can’t set it up in the ME for missions like CAP or Intercept. It has no A2A radar, and the AIM-9s are really only defensive
  8. Sorry, what South Atlantic must be the “least flat” map in DCS…
  9. Normally referred to as … ”map and compass” Linky??
  10. @Raz_Specter yes, yes, yes - absoflippinlutely Main reason for having this map And not only that - the Royal Navy assets would be absolutely superb for the forthcoming Kola Map This doesn’t need to be a free asset pack - put a sensible price on it and it would fit right in with the current clamour for everything Cold War I do confess a personal interest - a family friend served on HMS Brilliant during the Falklands conflict, and my father worked on a number of the warships and merchant ships in the Task Force
  11. Or the Anton - either will do, flying for JG 5 …just need an Illustrious class fleet carrier - works for the Hellcat and Corsair
  12. FG.1, FGR.2, F.3 Failing that, F-4J
  13. Unfortunately, I suspected as much… (especially the flying into the ground bit) … but one of the standout features of the historical air strikes on this map were the extreme low level flight profiles
  14. Have only used ME to build relatively simple SP missions… … but playing around with SA map and want AI redfor strike packages to use terrain masking to keep out of radar detection for as long as possible is there a preset for, say, terrain + xm, or is that way too ambitious???
  15. Had the same problem today… couldn’t place a Leander in the bay, but could put HMS Albion (mod) in there Has this always been an issue? I’m sure I had some older missions with SA RN assets in San Carlos Water
  16. Yes, that also fits with my experience
  17. Solomons map should have been first on the list for WW2 Pacific… I was using any number of the excellent WW2 Naval mods… not sure how they are in 2.9 though
  18. If ETO is anything to go by, it’s not the flyable of AI fighters that need to be top of the list… … it’s the “Everything Else” that could make the place feel alive (or not…) For PTO - lots of marine traffic, especially small freighters, patrol boats, destroyers etc
  19. I’ve successfully flown and landed the Mossie on one engine many times… it just seemed random that sometimes this worked “per the book” and other times it was a non-starter. Looking back I think it must have been missions with high fuel / weapons loads
  20. Yep https://www.key.aero/article/when-raf-phantom-shot-down-14-sqn-jaguar
  21. A2A kills….
  22. LOL - Had to explain the word “lorry” to a Texan on a client call a few years ago The phrase “lorry movements” caused utter confusion
  23. Has anyone got experience to share on the Authentikit Mossie engine control panel? looks good, and sounds like they want to add stick and trim adjusters as well
  24. The Authentikit stuff looks nice… But I always thought the Honeycomb Bravo throttle quadrant would be worth a try - especially for the Mosquito (and even more so when Project Lancaster arrives ) https://flyhoneycomb.com/products/bravo-throttle-quadrant
  25. I know that the Mosquito had a reputation as a dangerous aircraft in the event of an engine failure, especially in low / slow flight Has anyone else found that “making it back on one” vs crashing seems inconsistent? Sometimes I can feather the dead engine’s prop and keep the airspeed up enough to maintain control… and get home for a decent landing Other times the loss of an engine requires a constant loss of altitude to keep the airspeed up… until there’s none left (I suppose the old adage of the remaining engine just carries the aircraft further to the eventual crash site…) Aircraft weight perhaps? Get rid of any excess as soon as that prop is feathered???
