VP-Airfield Equipment 0.8.2 beta
Boosterdog replied to Hawkeye60's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
every man with a clipboard -EVER! Nice work. -
Isn’t this just a map and module wish list by any other name?
-
I see the plus for this but, looking at my own set ups I also see how stuff varies from module to module. Part of the fun of getting a new module for me is the set up. Certainly the items outlined in the OP would be welcomed. Id like to see the feature extended to where hovering over a switch not only tells you what it is but, via a click with a modifier took you to the binding for it so you could more easily set it up. It’s a small QOL thing but would save a little guesswork.

Not arguing for or against but how would “optimal” be defined? My optimal is likely different from yours. Some think flat shadows are better, some don’t some are happy with vsync, some are not. An optimal setting in Caucaus will likely crush a machine on the Marianas, channel or Syria maps. Different maps utilise the settings such as visible range and detail factor sliders very differently. A cap mission is hugely different in its demands from a helo cas. Modules have different demands. Even different missions using the same module and map can vary significantly dependent on what the AI is doing and what is depicted. I’m finding it difficult to understand how a game like dcs with so many variables necessary and otherwise can have a meaningful benchmarking tool.

I find carrier arrangments somewhat akin to the game "kerplunk". more something even a smidge and all hell breaks loose. I only wish more statics had chocks and covers for the "stored" renditions. Trying to place the little objects within a lua is a frustrating and time consuming experience. Great job anyhow.

Nice Deck you have there. Very believable and balanced.

Engine exhaust flames. Are they realistic?
Boosterdog replied to Terry Dactil's topic in DCS: Mosquito FB VI
If the above was what eventually got settled on in the game - I wouldnt be unhappy. This is quite an interesting article http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/mosquitocowlingsjh_1.htm Blue and snappy - its the future -
Engine exhaust flames. Are they realistic?
Boosterdog replied to Terry Dactil's topic in DCS: Mosquito FB VI
Thats a very good point. Living near to East Kirkby in Lincolnshire I have attended a couple of night runs of the lancaster and one of the mossie there. The mossie has a very different exhaust than the standard MkVI. I cannot recall the Lanc, whos exhaust are not shrouded as many wartime aircraft were, producing the type of vivid blue flame seem in some videos above. Id go as far as to say those expecting that would be sorely dissappointed. There were traces however but there were quite slight. The mossie produced no lighting effects but the exhaust stack is very different and appeared to be more of a damper in design (2 outlets at the front leading from an enclosed shroud). My feeling is still very much that public night time runs can be "enhanced" by running the engine over lean for brief periods and that the overall effect is affected by the length and design of the stack (short stacks allowing for more visiable effects). I do agree with you that the effects are currently overdone in DCS. I think something should be visible in low light but the effect should be subtle. I do not think flames should be spouting from the ports every start. -

All the videos show engines with very short stacks. The effect of the stack length/design is especially apparent on the 605 test run where simplified items are used. The mossie has much longer stacks which may help reduce the flash. This is a Merlin XX with short stacks (I think its from a Beaufighter) which again shows little in the way of gas discharge in daylight. Im not saying you wouldnt see anything but I doubt youd see anything approaching the night run videos above from a mossies merlin. Here is a night run from NZ. There are flames but not in huge quantity and not from every stack (despite the dramatic still). Whats interesting on this video is how the engine seems to be manipulated in order to acheive the flames effect. Id be tempted to say its being over leaned given the lack of anything at the start (full rich??) but I dont know. As a point of thinking....given you could technically make a stack and pipe quite long, wouldnt you just make the stack as long as it needed to be to dampen the flame and avoid dazzling the crew in order to save weight and material? This, to me, would be a sensible thing in terms of vision but also a very good visual reference for the crew (if you can see the blue flame you are over lean) -
VP-Airfield Equipment 0.8.2 beta
Boosterdog replied to Hawkeye60's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Thank you @Morpheus! - And thank you for restraining from calling me a dumbass which clearly I am! Dunno how I missed that obvious and clearly set out post. -
You made some good choices that should keep you busy for a good while and youve got the rig to run it! Enjoy! You're not alone in your love of the F4 and, as proof, here is just the latest thread on it (you will probably be able to to master most of your modules in the time it takes to read!)

VP-Airfield Equipment 0.8.2 beta
Boosterdog replied to Hawkeye60's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Installing and using this mod has become something of a trauma sadly. The information is now so diffuse its become very confusing and there is no clarification if the mod even works anymore. Any threads referenced by way of reply to those asking for help, are long, contemporanious ones which do not really denote if the original patch is updated, requires patching or something in between. Worst still they tend to lead to a merry go round of feedback loops in the links. The orginal 0.9.4 patch on the Virpil site does not appear to work as it stands. There are references to "fixes" but the links are either dead or return anti virus errors from windows defender and many could miss the root folder fixes required post 2.7. I have used and enjoyed the mod for many years and over several DCS "editions" so Im no noob but on this occasion Im beaten. EDIT - Im a dumbass -
Yet to ventrure in to DCS multiplayer but It will be the cold war severs where I will eventually go. Just to say I really appreaciate the dedication, attention to detail, skill, and co-operation that the server admins and their teams put into all of this. And congratulations on the little one @Alpenwolf

Russia Showcases "Checkmate", An F-35 Competitor?
Boosterdog replied to SCHiZO's topic in Military and Aviation
Well Ive cancelled my order - it doesnt look Russian enough and is therefore unlikely to last an obscene amount of time with only the very minimal maintenance my regime can afford due to my many financial embezzel...er final salary pension schemes. As my ole dad used to say (before I ousted him in a military coup and had him thrown in pit of vipers with land mines strapped to them and marrying my mother/sister) "never trust a machine whos wheel hubs are not painted green". Shame. It would have suited its intended role (the subjugation shade throwing civilians) perfectly. Ah well, back to being nice to the Amercans with their bland cheese on everything, country music and insincere cheery greetings. Diplomacy is grating..Im off to design myself a new medal for being great.. -
I have a very simple mission where a convoy of FARP vehicles travels around an area and sets up in different locations, begins to broadcast its location before moving on at a set time later and stopping the broadcast if the helo hasnt arrived. The convoy then proceeds to the next location and does the same. The locations themselves are predefined and use an invisible FARP around which the convoy deploys to a template (well kinda deployes to a template). I wondered if it were possible to randomise this over a number of locations. For example, a convoy setting off from A can go to B,C or D whilst a convoy setting off from B may return to A or go to D or X. I dont really want farps to just actvate without the travel as Ideally I want the player to have to sometimes clear the route within a limited time. Am I shooting too high?

I want to buy but I fear it will be unplayable for me
Boosterdog replied to Boosterdog's topic in Game Performance Bugs
Hip, Hind and, to a large extent the KA50. Add to that the Migs, the commonality in many systems between REDFOR modules and my love of the 70s and Im set as I am already (although a full fidelity SU17 wouldnt go amiss) Dont begrudge anyone the Apache. -

So, I think my problem has been solved. The last two video presentations on the fuel and navigation systems have pretty much confirmed Im a steam guage, analogue switch kinda guy that prefers looking out of his window even if he is lost. Weighing up what I like about helos, it isnt systems and isnt really the bang bang stuff either. Its a far more basic control thing. I think the AH64D will be an incredible module for those with an interest in modern cockpits and systems. As with the Hornet and F16, I just cant see myself having the dedication or the inclination to learn it in that amount of detail whilst retaining enough spare RAM in my brain to remember how to fly other stuff almost, kinda, nearly well. This isnt a swipe or critisism just a sobering moment when one realises how capable modern RL pilots actually have to be in that respect and perhaps how much outboard gear sim pilots of modern stuff need to get the most out of a module such as this. And yes I do still still think it'll take a pig of a rig to run it really well. -
I wish my DCS looked as good as HIPs. 1080P and medium settings grows old!
-
Thank you - great video and presentation.
-
No, no, no this is not right. You need to fly the Hip. Its the law. I have to use the living room in my tiny house so have a pack away kit based around a wheel stand pro. Its very cut down now on what it was but, in the past Ive used the central bar to clip a second monitor onto instead of the base for the stick and mounted the stick, with an extension lower down. I guess it could be used for the primary monitor also. The trottle is located on the optional extension arm. Below is an old picture of it. Ive got rid of the screen now and I use a goosneck mobile phone arm clamped to the riser to hold the TIR camera which is so much more flexible than having to try an place the flimsy thing on a monitor that may not be in the ideal position. Im gonng to get another to mount the keyboard to. I use a cheap camping chair as this is also foldaway. The cheaper the better Ive found as the mose expensive ones tend to be bigger. The arm is one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07S8G38J6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which Ive found to be very stable and just the right length for the rig. Current downside is the mouse as this just kinda rests on my leg but there are a 101 solutions for this that Im too lazy to do. Te kit isnt light either but does come apart to pack away easily which helps. It all runs to a powered hub also mounted on the rig to reduce set up faff (so just one cable from the pc to the hub. Without the monitor and seat, the thing takes up about at 3x2ft space with pedals, throttle and stick. All in the floor space taken is about 4 1/2 ft by 2ft.

Ah - the then would whichever is the slowest, most docile and compliant. Ideally one used to working with children to match my personality and I would like one that is likely to still be able to walk in a year's time. i know some can be really fineky about their drivers (or is it riders?) too. TBH the ride and power isnt really that important though as, in my expereience I will probably still spend most of the time endlessly adjusting its tack whist eyeing up my neigbours purebred and wondering which of the broken fences will stop me riding it today. (Not sure how much more Horse v DCS/GPU analogy Ive got left. :-)))

Its definately the pony but what with all the horse traders using bots to buy them up, upgrading from my dog is going to be really expensive. Just hoping Mutley Core becomes a thing soon......
