You know, sometimes I get frustrated, and end up talking to them with the cannon. I guess I'm just misunderstood.

That's awesome Zeus, a prompt reply with an earnest desire to help the community! Love it! My one thought, and not to take away from the simpit builders who want all the rotary switches et al, is that incorporating everything possible under the sun into one lua will make a larger, and possibly daunting keybind file, for the newbies. I use some 3 pos. abstractions myself, so I'm sympathetic, but... I think if ED could do anything for us, or maybe it's something the module developers did in terms of packing their kit, would be to not overwrite existing input .luas with every patch. Most people will customize their keybinds because it is entirely dependent on their peripherals and preferences, and if clear guides are available about how to build a custom keybind, it's not a big deal, and then would just be happiest not having to revisist them weekly. This can be accomplished by having every abstraction represented in the default lua, or.....just not over-writing them, or having them exist in the user's saved games folder instead of maintaining them in the game version folder so the customizations stick. I'm sure there is a good solution out there :) Still, in lieu of another solution, a comprehensive default .lua will be an improvement for the Harrier. One less module to have to copypasta for, after a patch. P.S. Maybe the best option of all would be to include all the possibilities into one lua, but comment out the more custom options, so people could easily activate the ones they want. And, of course, still not overwriting it :)

So, what happens if we try to play DCS without internet connectivity? Will modules protected this way work?

This is very exciting. Can't wait!

Hi, just wondering if anyone has seen this or perhaps knows how to fix it....when I go into F10 in DCS 1.5, the icon layer doesn't sync with the underlying map layer, so when I zoom in and out the object icons don't remain in the same place on the map. I haven't analyzed it closely, but I think only the map layer is zooming, but not the icons, or they aren't zooming at the same rate. I also don't think they translate together if I shift the map around. Also, the resolution the F10 map is drawn at, or the fidelity, the anti-aliasing and the fonts looks like crap, like it's EGA resolution or something. It seems like it started when I upgraded my video card to a 1080ti (although maybe it was a DCS patch around the same time?). Every other part of the game is working great. Drivers have been updated, install is utd but this has continued through several patches. Also, my 2.0 is working normally. Any clues? I haven't tried a clean wipe and install because it would take most of a week at my internet speeds, but I have ran DCS Updater utility to "clean" my install and everything seems to check out. P.S. Since this problem began I got a new build (mobo, CPU and RAM upgrade), and upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 (clean install rather, not an upgrade) and the F10 thing is still happening.

Introducing the VPC Constellation Series

Pretty clever imo. Lefties and dual stick users who are looking for better than the T16000 will be all over this. My only thought is that push button scroll wheels are typically difficult to push on without accidentally scrolling the wheel, but maybe someone else can do it better than me :) Also, that seems like the natural place to rest your thumb. But anyways, I'll likely buy one, or one of the later, upgraded models, and retire the T16K. -
*watches AlexandrT video....fires up DCS*

Getting this now with the latest update. Started after I built a new rig, never noticed before, not sure if that's the cause, or it's because I am trying to assign controls for a lot of planes from the DCS main menu. Will try from cockpit.

new build, trouble linking to .diff.luas

Thanks, that would be a relief! -
Hi, wondering if anyone can help me. I've built a new rig (1700x, 1080ti if you're curious) and have thrown in my old drive with DCS on it to spare re-downloading a craptonne of things including DCS on my rural internet. DCS runs fine, but isn't seeing my keybind files. It sees my missions just fine..... Now I have a new username on the new build, and ofc my OS and user directory are now on the new main drive, which isn't my old drive. I have copied the entire contents of the save game folder to the new drive, and a copy remains on the old drive. I have also created a copy on the old drive with the new user name, thinking one of these should be seen by DCS, but no-go. I manually re-entered my controls on all my birds and as soon as I clicked OK in the settings upon completion, DCS crashed, and I really don't want to go through all that again, so.... Does anyone know how to get DCS to recognize my new user name or otherwise find my keybind files? Is there a config file I can edit? Thanks!

Waiting for 8700K?
smallberries replied to iVVChewy9141VVi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Wow, 1-2 *whole* fps faster? Well, then it's definitely worth all the extra $$. It's funny, though, because AMD themselves claim that all their benchmarks show the Ryzen is better than the Threadrippers for gaming. CPU benchmark disagrees, but it's bizarre, there are literally no comprehensive reviews on the internet. Maybe it's too early, although it has been nearly 2 months since the 1900x was released and longer for the others, but there isn't a magazine article other than the one I post below that is younger than Sep. 1 announcing the release of the 1900x. Bizarre. PCI-e lanes? Pray tell, you planning on running SLI?:D  Good on ya, mate. Someone has to be the last one out of the pub. Meanwhile the AM4 platform has enough PCI-E for a normal user, a graphics card with 8 lanes, and an M.2 on 8 lanes, with 4 to spare. That's all anyone needs. Yeah, Coffee Lake does look stunted in that regard, although truly, its performance makes up for any PCI-e bottlenecking it might confront. At least that seems to be what the benchmarks show. It is a beast. And memory bandwidth? Again, mostly meaningless unless you can find a memory bottleneck, so says the internet. ECC sounds nice, but really, is someone planning on hacking you? Memory latency, however, that's significant, and TR at best draws even, if you force it into NUMA. I liked the idea of the TR. I was planning on buying one. But the TRs have no value to gamers. Their performance to dollar, for gaming, is subpar, compared to the Ryzens which give essentially the same performance for the average user at a fraction of the cost. If you want a reasonable gaming platform for a good price, with excellent broad usefulness for multitasking, streaming, or any other work other than gaming, the Ryzens are a great choice, and for a few dollars more, the 7700 and 8700s are the undisputed gaming top dogs, with the 8700 being surprisingly versatile as well. The Threadrippers only make sense for non-gaming workstations where the substantial extra cost is going to pay for itself in greater professional productivity for which, undoubtably, they are amazing. https://www.pcgamesn.com/amd/amd-threadripper-1900x-gaming-performance -
But is it clickable cockpit? What model?

Waiting for 8700K?
smallberries replied to iVVChewy9141VVi's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I did a lot of research before buying my new 1700X build. I had wanted to go Threadripper, for I wanted the extra PCI-e lanes, but anyone who is recommending that has not done their research. It has no real world advantages over the Ryzens for the home user. It is slower for gaming, the latency introduced by the two glued together CPUs negates any other benefits it might bring to the table. Do not go TR for gaming. The 8700K looks to be an awesome, albeit hot, chip. If it was merely about performance I would have gone that way instead of the AMD, but I decided the AMD platform was still going to be a huge upgrade for me and possibly more futureproof in some ways, and I simply wanted to support competition in the industry. But straight up, the 8700K will deliver more frames per second, but there's nothing wrong with the Ryzens. Nobody stays top dog for long, anyways. But from what I've seen the TR have no utility for the personal user, as much as I wanted a 1900 from the paper launch. The benchmarks were some very cold shower. -
Ka-52 misfire that everyone says was at Zapad 2017

There were 2 people at least within 10m of the strike, but there didn't seem to be a huge explosion. Hopefully they weren't hurt too badly. Were those smoke rockets, perhaps? The cameraman in the video during the strike seemed to be within 10m of the strike and didn't seem to get knocked down hard, so I'm thinking not much of an explosion? -
If you haven't already, you should check out the 2 videos this guy made testing the UH-1. I didn't have time to find the timestamps, but he did some tests and there was one situation where RPMs did not perform properly, and others when they did.. I think he has a 2nd video on the Huey as well. Very well done.

Ryzen 5 1600X or i5 7600K for DCS
smallberries replied to maalikm911's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Everyone in this thread has only considered direct CPU performance wrt DCS, which on the face of it seems to be an adequate consideration, but for most of us it really isn't. When you start considering how much you may have running in the background, your OS, other programs perhaps, such as Discord...the future is all about multithreading, and overall system performance will also be about multithreading. It has been going that way for some time, and it is accelerating. Everyone is going to be coding for multiple cores. OSes are going to optimize moreso for more cores. I only hope DCS eventually gets on the bandwagon. -

Oculus showcases "Advanced Hand Tracking" gloves

I'd like to just fast forward to the whole body peripheral with the seat-of-your-pants force feedback, VR, and whole body integration into the game. As long as its cheaper than real flight. -
I have the VKB with my Warthog grip on top, and it is very nice. If your wallet is unlimited, there are even more expensive options out there, like: For helicopters, for example: https://pro-flight-trainer-com.myshopify.com/collections/control-full-sets/products/pro-flight-trainer-puma This gives some other fancy schmancy controllers: http://www.aerotronicsllc.com/f18throttle.htm I'm sure there are all sorts, up to $6k 747 cockpit panels I have seen. But back to reality, if you're willing to buy something really good for gaming in general, and especially for sims, then the brands mentioned above are the best and most accessible. The Thrustmasters aren't terrible, but they aren't as smooth as the VKB (and presumably Virgils/Baur) even with lots of polish and lube.
-
Yeah, but you'll notice when steam decides to start using all your bandwidth, even when you check no updates during gaming. Steam's software is nothing if not poorly designed and obnoxiously coded.

How is it that the sailors had quicker access to stores of potatoes, than firearm lockers though? Life is stranger than fiction.
